TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese midfielder Sota Kawasaki has joined Mainz in the German Bundesliga from J-League side Kyoto Sanga on a season-long loan with an option to buy, both clubs announced Wednesday.
The move sees the 23-year-old link up with his Japanese compatriot Kaishu Sano at Mainz, who finished sixth in the league last season.
Kawasaki was called up but did not join the Japan squad currently at the E-1 Championship in South Korea in preparation for the transfer.
"I'll give my all to pay you back with positive news," Kawasaki said on Kyoto's website.

Baseball: Shohei Ohtani goes 1-for-2 in 5th All-Star appearance

ATLANTA - Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-2 with a single and a run scored in his fifth All-Star appearance Tuesday as the National League beat the American League in the inaugural home run swing-off following a 6-6 tie. The Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star singled to center leading off the bottom of the first inning and came home on a two-run double by Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks at Truist Park in Atlanta. In the second inning, Ohtani grounded out to first, one pitch after he narrowly missed a homer with a hard-hit foul ball to right field. "I just wanted to be aggressive, no matter whether I end up hitting a home run or striking out," Ohtani said. "My base hit wasn't an impressive one, but it was good." "I had a good time getting to know players I've seen only on TV and understanding their personalities." Ohtani, who hit his first All-Star Game home run last year, was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the fifth. The AL rallied from a 6-0 deficit and tied the score in a two-run ninth when Steven Kwan of the Cleveland Guardians delivered a game-tying infield single with two outs. The annual Midsummer Classic then went to the Home Run Derby-style swing-off, with three hitters from each league getting three swings each. Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies went 3-for-3 to give the NL the lead for good at 4-3. The NL's starting pitcher Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates threw a 1-2-3 opening frame, striking out the first two batters and getting Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees to ground out. Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Los Angeles Angels left-hander Yusei Kikuchi were the other Japanese players selected to the All-Star Game but did not pitch.

Football: Ryo Germain nets again, Japan beat S. Korea in East Asian final

YONGIN, South Korea (Kyodo) -- Ryo Germain built on his impressive form with an early strike as Japan held on to beat South Korea 1-0 to claim their second successive East Asian E-1 men's football championship on Tuesday. Germain scored his fifth goal of the tournament just eight minutes into the winner-take-all finale, volleying in a cross from Yuki Soma at Yongin Mireu Stadium in a Seoul suburb. A week earlier, the 30-year-old Sanfrecce Hiroshima striker netted four times in the Samurai Blue's 6-1 opening win over Hong Kong when he made his national team debut. "My players made a great effort," Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu said. "They showed the pride of the J-League and the depth of our national team. The way they played this tournament made it difficult for me to select the World Cup squad." Japan's E-1 squad was selected entirely from the domestic J-League. The South Korean squad did not include players such as Tottenham star Son Heung Min, either. Japan and South Korea came into the match after both defeated China and Hong Kong in the four-team, round-robin event. South Korea first went close to scoring, with Na Sang Ho's shot hitting the far post in the seventh minute. The Koreans ramped up their attack in the second half, but Japan hung tough to defend dangerous situations en route to their third overall E-1 title. With the latest victory, Japan improved their win-loss record against South Korea to 16-40 with 23 draws. Both teams have qualified for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States. Earlier Tuesday, China edged Hong Kong 1-0 thanks to a 20th-minute goal from Huang Zhengyu.

Springbok Wiese banned for four matches over head butt

rugby union South Africa No 8 Jasper Wiese has been banned for four matches after head-butting Italy prop Danilo Fischetti in last weekend's Test victory in Gqeberha, World Rugby announced on Tuesday. The 29-year-old back-rower will miss a one-off test against Georgia in Mbombela this Saturday and three Rugby Championship matches -- two at home to Australia and one against New Zealand in Auckland. Wiese will be available for selection when the Springboks face the All Blacks in Wellington on September 13, seven days after the first meeting between the sides. South Africa then face Argentina twice to complete their Rugby Championship schedule. They meet France, Italy, Ireland and Wales during a November tour to Europe. Wiese was red-carded after 22 minutes of the first half in the second test against Italy when South Africa were leading by 10 points. The Rugby World Cup title-holders went to win Saturday's game 45-0. His place in the team to face Georgia this weekend will be taken by his younger brother, Cobus Wiese, who made his test debut last Saturday. Jasper Wiese played for the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein and Leicester Tigers before joining Japanese outfit Urayasu D-Rocks last year. © 2025 AFP
