Call for govt-run special school in Madurai grows
Madurai: Even as the number of children with developmental disabilities steadily rises in Madurai, the district lacks a single govt-run special school. With no dedicated public infrastructure in place, parents and activists have urged authorities to establish inclusive infrastructure dedicated to children with special needs (CWSN). Deepa V, who came to Madurai eight years ago with her autistic son Avinash (name changed), said that while he is now 20 years and doing well, the city still doesn't offer enough opportunities for children like him. "There was no space for him to meet children like himself—no place to play or feel like he belonged," she said, calling for a dedicated sensory park and a publicly funded special school so families from nearby villages can also benefit. Currently, the responsibility of care and education for CWSN falls primarily on parents, particularly mothers, said A Chandrasekaran, founder of the Madurai Group Living Foundation, which runs a special needs park on corporation land since 2018. "There are only three private special schools with more than 100 students and about 20 with fewer than 25. But they are expensive," he said. Samagra Shiksha, a central govt scheme implemented in corporation schools, includes provisions for inclusive education for CWSN. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cyprus investments might surprise you Cyprus Investments | Search Ads Get Info Undo "Children with special needs are unable to keep up in inclusive classrooms along with the other children and end up getting left out," said G Gurubharathy, consultant for the Happy Schools initiative. This academic year, a special BEd qualified educator was appointed to the Maraimalai Adigal Corporation School, a move officials say is a step forward. However, parents and advocates argue that such token efforts cannot substitute the need for a full-fledged special school. Madurai corporation's educational officer K Jaisankar said a new day-care centre for CWSN is in the pipeline. "We are collecting student data and submitting it to the corporation commissioner. The process is underway," he said.

Chandigarh municipal corporation approves hike in community centre booking charges
1 2 Chandigarh: Denying the proposed two-to-three-fold major increase in the community centres bookings in all three categories, the general house of the municipal corporation on Tuesday approved policy guidelines for the management of community centres in the city with a minor hike in the booking charges. There was an increase of Rs 3,000 for A category, Rs 2,000 for B category, and Rs 1,000 for C category community centres. The categorisation of the community centres was done based on their locations, construction, and given facilities to organise functions and gatherings as per laid down terms and conditions. Besides that, the general house unanimously approved the free booking of the community centres for the girl child of DBT (direct benefit transfer) beneficiaries as per the records of the Chandigarh administration. Additionally, on the proposal of Congress councillor Gurpreet Singh, it was also decided that on the recommendation of the municipal councillors, 20 free bookings will also be kept, which can be related to any category, like EWS, labour, poor people, etc. The MC said that the key objective of the policy is to promote and encourage social, cultural, intellectual, literacy, and welfare activities among the residents, members of the community centres, and senior citizens, with the aim of building a happy, healthy, and patriotic society. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Prestige White Meadows – Sky Villas in Whitefield Prestige White Meadows Learn More The aspects of membership, eligibility criteria, termination, general terms and conditions, booking procedure, gyms, libraries, administrative committee, and functioning are widely explained in the policy.
