Final former Salisbury University student sentenced to 18 months for off-campus attack
Zachary Leinemann, 19, was one of 15 students who were initially charged with false imprisonment, assault and a hate crime offense after one of them created a Grindr account and posed as a teen to lure a victim to an apartment near the university campus.
Grindr is a dating app used mostly by gay and bisexual men.
The victim was slapped, punched and kicked by "approximately 15 college-aged males," who also spat on and called the victim an anti-gay slur, according to investigators.
Once the victim escaped, he was hospitalized for a broken rib. An investigation led to the arrests of 15 university students, who initially faced a laundry list of charges, including felony assault and hate crime charges.
The charges were later reduced to misdemeanor false imprisonment and assault for most of the suspects.
According to university officials, the students were banned from campus property, virtual and online classes, and university-sponsored events. They were also suspended by their Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter.
One of the former students, Benjamin Brandenburg, was acquitted.
Leinemann was sentenced to six years, with all but 18 months suspended. He was also ordered to serve three years of probation, court records show.
He pleaded guilty to assault and false imprisonment on August 14.

She has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements and false declaration before a grand jury, according to the indictment. The city of New Orleans told NBC News it will have no comment on the indictment until the mayor's legal team has time to review the indictments. "The Mayor's attorney, Eddie Castaing, recently received the information, and is thoroughly reviewing the document," the statement said. "Until his review is complete, the City will not comment further on this matter." The indictment is the culmination of a long-running federal investigation into Cantrell, the first female mayor in the City's 300-year history. Prosecutors allege that Cantrell was having a romantic relationship with New Orleans Police Officer Jeffrey Paul Vappie II, who is on the department's executive protection unit. That relationship allegedly occurred between 2021 and 2024. Cantrell was married during the period of the alleged affair to attorney Jason Cantrell. He died in August 2023. 'To hide their relations from detection and to maximize their time together, Cantrell and Vappie exploited their public positions to develop and implement a scheme to defraud the city of New Orleans and the New Orleans Police Department by engaging in personal activities while Vappie claimed to be on duty and was paid for,' the indictment says. They further claimed that the pair had exchanged some 15,000 messages, photos, and audio clips on WhatsApp over an eight month period. The investigators also allege that Cantrell and Vappie were using the app to intimidate their subordinates and hide evidence. Vappie and Cantrell traveled together on 14 trips in eight months, several of which were romantic vacations under the pretense of work trips, according to prosecutors. In total, the city spent $70,000 to sent Vappie along with the mayor on her trips — which in some cases included visits to wine tastings — the prosecutors claimed. Vappie was initially charged with wire fraud and making false statements. He has pleaded not guilty. Cantrell was added to the case after an investigation into Vappie's actions. If the pair are convicted, both could go to prison, though for how long varies based on the indictment. Some indictments carry a five year penalty, and others could put them away for up to 20. The term-limited Democratic mayor will leave office in January.

Thug escapes jail for strangling pregnant ex during row
A thug who left his pregnant ex-girlfriend terrified when he repeatedly pushed her before strangling her has been allowed to walk free from court. Mills, 23, of Paxdale, off Ennerdale, Hull, denied offences of intentional strangulation and assault on August 19 last year but he was convicted after a trial before a district judge at Hull Magistrates' Court. He had been committed to Hull Crown Court for sentence. Hannah Turner, prosecuting, said that Mills and the young woman were in a relationship until a few days before the incident. They had a child together and she was pregnant with his other child at the time of the offences, HullLive reports. There was an argument and the heated words later continued. Mills pushed her, shouted at her and poked a finger into the right side of her forehead. He repeatedly told her: "Get the f*** out of my house." He stood in the doorway while she was holding their child. "He continued to push her," said Miss Turner. The woman told him: "Stop pushing me." Mills pushed her more than 10 times and put both his hands around her neck, causing her to fall backwards onto a banister. He pressed down and restricted her breathing, causing marks around her neck, before loosening his grip. The woman managed to slip past him into the living room. "She repeatedly asked him not to touch her," said Miss Turner. "She sat on the sofa." The woman and the child went to her car and Mills told her that he was sorry for everything that he had done. She later received a number of phone calls and messages from him apologising for his actions. He was arrested on August 20 last year. "The victim was pregnant at the time and the child was in her arms at the time of the offence," said Miss Turner. During police interview, Mills claimed that his ex-girlfriend had attacked him and that he pushed her in self-defence. He claimed that she tripped over some shoes and that this was when she fell onto the banister. He claimed that he reached out to stop her falling and that his hand accidentally went round her neck. The woman later said: "This incident has made me feel scared of him and what he is capable of and that unknown. That's not the man I thought he was." Amber Hobson, mitigating, said that there were references for Mills. He had no previous convictions. No other mitigation was requested after an indication of the intended sentence was given. Judge John Thackray KC told Mills: "You should appreciate that violence in a domestic context is not less serious, it's more serious because there is a breach of trust. She was entitled to feel safe and secure in your company – you being her ex-partner and the father of her children. "This is much more serious than violence that takes place outside a relationship. Intentional strangulation is terrifying for the victim. They never know when the strangulation will come to an end. It's clear that your victim was very scared and upset by what you did." Mills was given an 18-month suspended prison sentence, 100 hours' unpaid work, 26 sessions of a probation service domestic abuse programme and 15 days' rehabilitation. He was given a five-year restraining order.

On Wednesday, Aug. 13, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department (SBCSD) arrested Craig Arthur Simmons, 61, in connection with the dog mauling, after having "conducted surveillance" on his home, the SBCSD's Barstow Station announced in an alert. The arrest took place nearly a month after a 17-year-old girl was mauled by more than 10 dogs in the community of Newberry Springs on July 17. At the time, the girl's parents said she was out jogging when the "large-breed dogs" attacked her, according to authorities. The teen has since been identified locally, and through a GoFundMe campaign, as Tracy. Ahead of Simmons' arrest, police said they saw the suspect riding his bike down a roadway near the home. They interviewed him and then took him into custody, and he was later booked into the High Desert Detention Center. Simmons is accused of violating Code 399(B), Owner of Animal Causing Serious Bodily Injury or Death, according to the SBCSD. The SBCSD did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Saturday, Aug. 16. It is not clear if Simmons has legal representation to comment on his behalf. The SBCSD announced last month that authorities learned of the mauling at around 9:52 a.m. local time on July 17. Police said the attack took place about two hours prior. The teen was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, and, after speaking with her parents, police learned the dogs bit her "several times" on her arms and legs. The attack left the girl with "large lacerations, abrasions and removed flesh," per authorities. A witness rescued the teen from the animals. According to the SBCSD, the dogs were "not fenced or leashed at the time of the incident." The San Bernardino Animal Control later seized 16 canines from the area, before the launch of a criminal investigation. At the time of the attack, the teen was traveling to a workout facility near a local community center, ABC 7 Los Angeles reported. While the girl's mother told the outlet she "never thought anything would happen to her," she added that she "couldn't recognize" her daughter after the attack, since she was covered in dirt. "What was going through my mind was the worst,' her stepfather, Carlos Ramirex, told ABC 7. 'It was not one dog or two dogs, it was a lot. They bit every part of her body you could think of except for her ankles." The GoFundMe page for the teen, who ABC 7 reported has since been released from the hospital, said she was preparing for her senior year of high school.
