6,500 Anganwadi centres upgraded to Smart centres across Tamil Nadu, says Minister Geetha Jeevan
Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan on Friday announced that 6,500 Anganwadi centres across the state have been upgraded into Smart Anganwadi centres. She made this announcement while participating in an event at Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (TKGMCH).
At the event Ms. Geetha Jeevan launched the distribution of special protein rich meals to the patients undergoing dialysis treatment at the government hospitals. The meal includes milk, eggs, a cup of cooked chickpeas and biscuits.
The event was presided over by TKGMCH Dean G. Sivakumar, Medical Superintendent Padhmanabhan and Resident Medical Officer Silas Jeyamani.
Addressing the media, the Minister said, 'The Chief Minister has directed that protein rich meals be provided daily to patients undergoing dialysis. Accordingly the distribution has begun at the TKGMCH.'
She added that in the TKGMCH alone, 22 patients were currently undergoing dialysis every day and this nutritious meal would be helpful for the patients travelling from rural areas for treatment.
Speaking on reopening of Anganwadi centres on June 2, she said for the first time, books and uniforms would be distributed on the first day for the children attending Anaganwadi centres. Preparations were underway to ensure this distribution across 54,000 centres in Tamil Nadu.
She highlighted that about 6,500 Anganwadi centres in the state had been upgraded into Smart Anganwadi centres as of March 2025, with fresh mural paintings, LED TVs, RO water purifiers and other modern facilities. 'These upgrades have been carried out using funds from CSR initiatives , MLA and MP Constituency developments funds, special grants from the Central and State government and special allotments from the District Collector,' she noted.
The minister further added that the information regarding underweight new born was collected by the Social Welfare Department and special care was being provided to these children. Even children who were not enrolled at Anganwadi centres were visited by Anganwadi workers to monitor their health and offer nutritional support. These efforts resulted in the reduction in infant mortality rates among children under the age five in the past year, she stated.

Meghalaya CM hands over smartphones to Anganwadi workers
Williamnagar, May 27 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma handed over smartphones to Anganwadi workers at a programme held at St George Higher Secondary School in Samanda, East Garo Hills district on Tuesday. Sangma said the smartphones would enhance the performance and services of Anganwadi workers. The Ministry of Women and Child Development had funded Rs. 6 crore for the purchase of 6,162 smartphones for the workers, supporting them in their critical roles. 'The phones will bridge the digital divide and improve service delivery," he told the Anganwadi workers from various parts of East Garo Hills district, who received the smartphones. Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh and PHE Minister Marcuise Marak were also present. The Chief Minister informed that the POSHAN App had been installed on the smartphones, which the Anganwadi workers would use to record data and information and perform other reporting tasks, ensuring better monitoring and implementation of social welfare schemes. The mobile application digitises the physical registers used by Anganwadi workers, improving the quality of their work while enabling real-time monitoring. Sangma also informed that Anganwadi workers would be incentivized for regularly monitoring the growth of children up to 6 years old by measuring their height and weight and uploading the data to the POSHAN Tracker. During the programme, the Chief Minister also distributed IIT Innovation ECO H2O Filters to Anganwadi centers, aiming to provide safe drinking water to children in rural communities. He also inaugurated the new building of St George Higher Secondary School, Samanda, dedicating it to the students and expressing hope that it would inspire learning, creativity, and growth. Poshan Abhiyaan to fight malnutrition, improve health and economic productivity: Minister
New Delhi: Poshan Abhiyaan will fight malnutrition among women and children, which will improve health and boost economic productivity in the country, said Harsh Malhotra, Union Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road, Transport and Highways here on Friday. Malhotra noted that nutrition plays a vital role in a child's growth and adequate nutrition is essential for children to reach their full potential. He added that a well-balanced diet can have long-term benefits for their physical and emotional development. 'By addressing malnutrition and promoting good nutrition, Poshan Abhiyan can have a tremendous impact on India's human capital, economic productivity, and wholesome sustainable development,' said Malhotra. 'Poshan Abhiyaan is Modi Government's effort to make a visible shift towards malnutrition reduction and improved health, wellness and immunity,' he added. As part of the Poshan Abhiyaan, the Minister also distributed around 300 nutrition kits to the beneficiaries at Aggarwal Dharamshala Bhawan, Shakarpur, Delhi. "Poshan Abhiyan is a crucial initiative for tackling malnutrition in the country and has advocated for a mission mode approach to address the situation,' Malhotra said. 'The campaign targets children, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers -- a testament to the Modi Government's focus on the holistic development of the community,' he added. Malhotra also applauded the Poshan Tracker which enables real-time monitoring of nutrition services at Anganwadi Centres where the beneficiaries can now self-register via the Poshan Tracker Web App for improved access. The Poshan Tracker enables Anganwadi Workers to manage attendance, growth monitoring, meal distribution, and early childhood education, ensuring that beneficiaries are well-tracked and supported. "Let's make a commitment to work together, ensuring that every child, mother, and family in India has access to nutritious food and a healthy future, " the Minister said. He stated that "access to better nutrition today can help for a brighter future tomorrow" which would transform the nation into a Healthier and Viksit Bharat.
