Mum-of-six 'beaten to death by wanted man on the run' while walking her dog
A dog walker was beaten to death by a fugitive who was living off-grid in the countryside, a court has heard.
Anita Rose, 57, is said to have encountered Roy Barclay, 56, after setting off from her home in Brantham, Suffolk, with her dog Bruce early on July 24 last year.
Jurors at Ipswich Crown Court heard she was subject to a 'vicious and brutal attack with numerous kicks, stamps and blows being delivered to her face, head and body'.
She was found by passers-by with Bruce's lead wrapped tightly around her leg, the court heard, and she died four days later at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
Christopher Paxton KC, prosecuting, told the court 'no eyewitnesses saw the incident'.
But he said the pink jacket Anita was wearing on the day she was attacked was found at one of Barclay's makeshift camps.
'You will hear that Roy Barclay had no fixed address and lived mostly in the countryside, wandering the fields and lanes, sleeping in various makeshift camps,' he added.
'He lived off-grid because for two years, Roy Barclay had been unlawfully at large.
'He had been on the run trying to avoid the police and authorities to try and avoid being recalled back to prison.'
Mr Paxton said Barclay, who denies murder, kept the jacket 'as a trophy' and it had Barclay's 'semen on the neckline'.
He said Barclay's walking boots – which 'amounted to the murder weapon' – were found at the same camp.
There is 'support for the conclusion that the marks on Anita's face were made by these boots', the barrister added.
He said Ms Rose's phone case was also found there, and her Samsung earbuds were located at a different makeshift camp Barclay had used.
Mr Paxton said Barclay 'carries dog biscuits with him and is a dog lover'.
He said Barclay tied the dog lead around Ms Rose's leg 'we say to stop Bruce (the dog) running off'.
Jurors heard Barclay made various internet searches after the attack, including 'how are outside objects swabbed for DNA' and 'can barbed wire be swabbed for DNA'. More Trending
The prosecutor described Barclay as 'cunning and resourceful'.
The defendant, who wore glasses, a grey prison-issue tracksuit and has a grey beard and long, thinning grey hair, listened to proceedings from the secure dock of the court.
Relatives of Ms Rose listened from the public gallery.
The trial, which is due to last eight weeks, continues.

Body of British hiker, 36, found months after going missing in Italian Dolomites
The body of a British hiker who went missing in the Dolomites on New Year's Day has been found by mountain rescuers. Aziz Ziriat, 36, was last heard from on January 1 while hiking with a friend, Samuel Harris, in the Italian mountain range. Samuel, 35, was found dead just over a week after the pair went missing, his body covered in snow. Aziz's phone, bank card and glasses were found close to his friend's body. This morning (May 31) Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue teams said they have found Aziz's body, and are working to recover his remains. The friends, who both lived in London, were planning to climb a 3,000m mountain on January 1. Aziz filmed a video and shared it with family and friends on the day he disappeared, in which he said: 'Happy New Year! Woken up to some delightful sunshine, blue skies. 'There has not been a cloud in the sky since we got here, which is slightly unnerving but also quite jokes. 'I want to attack this today, get up into some of the 3,000 bits which are up yonder. 'Looking forward to a day scampering, we are not taking our packs today, for the last two days lugging up this God-forsaken valley, another day frolicking before schlepping over to the next valley.' But their families raised the alarm after they both missed their flight back to the UK on January 6. The Italian authorities began a search of the mountain, but their efforts were hampered by heavy snow and strong winds. They found Samuel's body on January 8 at the base of the Care Alto peak and suggested he may have fallen from rocks above. Rescuers traced their steps by tracking their mobile phones and managed to find both of their backpacks – but they found no trace of Aziz. Friends and family described Aziz and Samuel as experienced hikers and climbers who have faced harsh conditions before. Speaking soon after Samuel's body was found, his friend and business partner Spencer Jones paid tribute, saying: 'To say I am devastated would be an understatement, and I have no words to fully describe how I am feeling at the moment. 'The search is ongoing for our good friend Aziz Ziriat, so for now, I want to focus on Sam. 'He was an amazing friend of 23 years, ever since our school days. 'He was probably the most knowledgeable person I have ever known, and building the business with him has been an incredible journey.' ‘Beautiful' woman in her 20s stabbed to death in middle of town centre
A woman in her 20s has been stabbed to death in the middle of a London high street. Emergency services were called to Croydon town centre in south London just before 9am today. She was found unresponsive just minutes from the Centrale Shopping Centre. A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been arrested on suspicion of murder. Witness Sebastian, who was one of the first to find the victim, said he 'still shaken up' over the attack. He told The Sun: 'I ran over to go and look – some people told me not to go – but it was a natural reaction. 'She seemed so young, such a beautiful young girl.' Superintendent Mitch Carr said: 'This is a tragic incident where a young woman has lost her life and our thoughts are with her loved ones. 'I especially want to thank the members of the public, including a teenage boy, who bravely tried to help the victim. 'We believe that this was an isolated incident, but understand that this news will shock the local community. 'Officers will remain in the area over the coming days and we would ask anyone who has concerns to speak with them.' Schoolgirl, 13, killed after javelin went through her eye in PE lesson pictured
A schoolgirl who died when a classmate threw a javelin towards her has been pictured for the first time. 13-year-old Anastasia Ryzhenko was struck in the eye with a javelin, sending her into a coma from which she never woke up. During a gym class, coach Vladimir Miroshnichenko had paired Anastasia with 16-year-old Timur in Prokhladny, Russia. The coach had 'turned away' when the javelin was thrown, but Timur warned Anastasia when it was too late. Anastasia's mum, Elena, said: 'At that very moment, he threw it, then he called out to her. She raised her head, and the spear hit her in the eye.' Her eye socket was stabbed with the javelin, and her jaw also broke, sparking internal bleeding into her lungs, her mum said. An investigation has been launched by the Russian Investigative Committee. Tributes have been shared online for young Anastasia, who would have celebrated her 14th birthday today. Mum Elena shared gratitude for the first responders and doctors who tried to save Anastasia. More Trending But she added: 'The boy's mother does not admit her son's guilt at all,' said Elena. During all this time, she never came. And the coach didn't come, only on the day of the funeral. 'As a mother, I would have crawled on my knees pleading: 'Forgive me, excuse me, maybe I can help, let me at least take you there?' The Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement: 'The investigation has studied all the circumstances of the incident, interrogated eyewitnesses, employees of the sports school and the relevant ministry, seized documentation regulating the procedure for conducting field training sessions and ensuring safety, and other measures are being taken to collect evidence.
