Scooter Braun Is Vacating The HYBE America CEO Position

Hype Malaysia2 days ago
If you're a pop music and K-pop fan, you'll be familiar with the name Scooter Braun. The music executive doesn't have the best rep amongst fans for many reasons – but a recent update on his role in HYBE America garnered mixed reactions.
Yesterday (1st July 2025, Tuesday), major news outlets reported that Scooter will be stepping down from his CEO position at HYBE America. The music mogul has been the head of the HYBE subsidiary since its establishment in 2021 after the South Korean company acquired Scooter's company, Ithaca Holdings. It's unknown when the move will be official, but the news has been shared internally amongst HYBE America staffers.
Online, netizens cheered over the news of Scooter stepping down as CEO. K-pop fans have repeatedly called for HYBE to distance themselves from the record executive because of his open support for Zionism and other controversies. Many were happy with the news that Scooter will no longer be heading the company, which houses the global girl group KATSEYE.
However, there's more to this announcement. While Scooter may no longer be the CEO of HYBE America, he'll still hold an advisory position in the company. The 44-year-old will join the HYBE Board of Directors as a director and a senior advisor to chairman and CEO Bang Si-Hyuk. Scooter will also remain the second-largest individual shareholder in the company and will continue to help guide artists on the HYBE roster.
Fans are understandably not happy to hear that Scooter will still play a role in the company and the activities of HYBE Label artists, especially KATSEYE. Some have continued to pressure the company against platforming supporters of Zionism by helping trend the hashtag #HYBEDivestFromZionism on social media. Others said they would continue to boycott the company and its releases until they cut all ties with Scooter.
Meanwhile, Isaac Lee Possin, who has been chairman of HYBE Latin America since November 2023, will take over the HYBE America CEO position. What are your thoughts on this?

South Korea may ask US to extend tariff freeze

SEOUL: South Korea's Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo said yesterday that he might request an extension of the freeze on US tariffs that is set to expire within days when he heads to Washington for talks with US officials. Yeo, who became South Korea's new trade envoy last month, is due to fly to the US yesterday and plans to hold talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and other senior officials today, just ahead of the July 9 deadline when US tariffs could rise sharply. US President Donald Trump said his administration would start sending letters yesterday to countries specifying what tariff rates they will face on imports into the US. Yeo said the substance of negotiations mattered more than the deadline, noting he would ask the US to take time and accelerate talks to reach a 'win-win' deal. South Korea has sought exemptions from Trump's punishing tariffs on imports of automobiles and steel products, as well as a 25% 'reciprocal' levy on the Asian ally currently paused for negotiations. The government of Asia's fourth-largest economy, which is currently subject to a blanket 10% tariff, agreed with the US in their opening round of trade talks in late April to craft a trade deal reducing tariffs by the July deadline. However, negotiations appear to have made little progress and were hampered by political uncertainty over the last few months following South Korea's martial law crisis with President Lee Jae Myung elected as the new leader on June 3. President Lee said on Thursday that the ongoing talks between Seoul and its ally Washington had 'not been easy', adding the two sides were not clear on what they want. Washington is demanding better access to the agriculture and car sectors, and improved market access and non-discriminatory treatment in the digital sector, Minister Yeo told a parliamentary hearing yesterday. 'The government will respond flexibly by taking into account the level of the US demands and domestic political security sensitivities,' Yeo said. Yeo also said that the US was asking for larger investments by South Korean companies in the country and increased South Korean purchases of US energy supplies. Although South Korea has shown interest in a US$44 billion (RM185 billion) LNG project in Alaska, Yeo said the feasibility of the project was still not clear and the US would only provide more information later in the year. South Korea's efforts to reach a trade deal come as Trump said Vietnam and the US had agreed on a 20% tariff rate on imports from Vietnam, down from an initial 46% rate he threatened. Yeo said South Korean companies that use the Southeast Asian country as a manufacturing base would be affected by those tariffs. – Reuters

South Korea penalises 'negligent' SK Telecom over major data leak

FILE PHOTO: The logo of SK Telecom is pictured at the GSMA's 2023 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain February 28, 2023. REUTERS/Nacho Doce/File photo SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korean authorities ordered on Friday SK Telecom to strengthen data security and imposed a fine after the country's biggest mobile carrier was hit by a cyberattack that caused the leak of 26.96 million pieces of user data. The measures come after SK Telecom in April disclosed that it had suffered a major leak of customer data caused by a malware attack. Shares in SK Telecom closed down 5.6% on Friday. "SK Telecom failed to fulfil its duty of care to protect USIM data and did not comply with relevant regulations," the Ministry of Science and ICT said in a statement. "Therefore, the company is deemed negligent in this incident," the ministry said as it announced the results of the government's probe into the data leak. USIM refers to universal subscriber identity module cards used in smart phones. The ministry said it would impose a fine of up to 30 million won ($21,970), and SK Telecom must enforce security measures at least once a quarter, have its chief executive officer directly oversee data governance, and increase personnel and investment in data security. Following the government's announcement, SK Telecom unveiled a variety of measures to compensate its affected customers and beef up information protection. The company will invest about 700 billion won ($513.38 million) over five years for data protection and give a discount of 50% for August subscription fees for all of its 24 million customers, it said in a statement. "All SK Telecom executives and employees take the results of the public-private joint investigation very seriously and once again sincerely apologise to customers and society for the cyber breach incident," SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang said. SK Telecom also slashed its forecast for 2025 revenue by 800 billion won to reflect the cost of about 500 billion won for the customer benefit package in relation to the cyber breach incident, the company said in a regulatory filing. Science Minister Yoo Sang-im called the case "a wake-up call for information protection" for the overall network infrastructure. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won apologised last month for the data leak and SK Telecom said it would take full responsibility for any harm caused as a result of the breach, which has caused alarm among its 23 million users over the possible theft of personal and financial information. The mobile carrier said it would start offering USIM replacements to all 23 million users for free at more than 2,600 retail stores nationwide following the cybersecurity breach. About 9.39 million users have replaced their USIMs as of late June, according to SK Telecom. ($1 = 1,363.5200 won) (Reporting by Heekyong Yang, Joyce Lee and Ju-min Park Editing by Ed Davies)
