Salleh: Focus on ideas, not insults, in state election
Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: As the 17th Sabah state election draws near, former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has called for a more respectful and idea-driven political campaign. 'Politics should not be about attacking individuals, it's about providing solutions,' he stated in a recent Facebook post. The Usukan assemblyman stressed that success shouldn't come from undermining others but through clear strategies, sound ideas, and a proven record of service. 'Personal attacks and emotional arguments only divide us and distract from the real issues,' he said. Salleh urged for a more mature political discourse, grounded in professionalism and sincerity. Zahid extends condolences over killings of Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has extended his condolences to the families of five Al Jazeera media personnel killed in an Israeli military strike in Gaza City. In a Facebook post today, the deputy prime minister said the five — Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal — died while carrying out a noble duty. This, he said, was to convey the truth and report the real situation on the ground to open the world's eyes to the suffering of the Palestinian people. "Their courage and sacrifice are proof that the struggle for justice will never fade, even when life is at stake. "I would like to express my deepest condolences to all the victims' families and strongly condemn this heinous act, which clearly violates international humanitarian law," he said. Zahid reaffirmed that Malaysia would continue to speak out on the world stage, fight for justice for the Palestinian people, and demand an immediate end to attacks on journalists and humanitarian workers. "May their souls be blessed with mercy and placed among the martyrs," he added. It was reported today that two journalists and three cameramen were killed on Sunday after their tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in western Gaza City was attacked by Israel.

State education directors, district education officers ordered to conduct spot checks on schools

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Education Ministry (MOE) has ordered all state education directors and district education officers to conduct spot checks on schools to curb bullying in school. Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the officials have to also visit boarding schools at night not only to monitor but to get to know and understand how boarding school students live. Advertisement 'Maybe we need to go down without being told. We go to schools, look at the situation there, we want to see the nature of the school, how things happen. We might visit at night to see dormitories,' he told reporters after the MADANI Teachers Appreciation Event officiated by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. He added that school principals and headmasters were instructed by the ministry to lead chants of 'Kami Benci Buli' (We Hate Bullying) before and after each school session to instill a sense of abhorrence for bullying in the hearts and minds of students and pupils. He also revealed that the ministry would improve security features in schools, especially boarding schools, to curb bullying incidents such as adding the number of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and the number of dormitory wardens. Education Ministry denies shielding anyone in bullying cases

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh ( pic ) said the ministry has never sought to shield any party involved in such incidents, contrary to certain allegations. Secondly, MOE will not and has never attempted to protect anyone involved, as alleged,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Semporna MP Tan Sri Shafie Apdal, who referred to the ongoing bullying case involving Zara Qairina and asked what measures were being taken to protect students and ensure justice. Shafie also stressed that law enforcement must not protect any party involved, regardless of their identity. Wong said the ministry has always been ready to cooperate fully with police in assisting investigations at all levels. Advertisement He added that the ministry has established guidelines and circulars (SPI) to address disciplinary issues and bullying in schools, which are enforced and updated periodically to strengthen preventive measures. Zara, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up. The exhumation of her remains at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, was completed at 7.15pm on Saturday.
