NCERT forms panel to review textbooks amid row over Rajput, Ahom history
In a statement on Thursday, the NCERT said that in keeping with its established practice, it has formed a panel comprising senior experts to examine suggestions and concerns related to the educational content in a few textbooks. "This committee will examine the feedback in light of the available evidence and submit its report as soon as possible," the statement noted.
The committee is headed by Professor Ranjana Arora, head of the NCERT's Department of Curriculum Studies and Development.
The move comes amid mounting criticism from public figures and historians over alleged factual inaccuracies and exclusions in recently revised school textbooks.
NCERT has begun rolling out newly updated textbooks for several classes as part of its curriculum revision. While all books till Class 8 have already been released, the remaining ones--from Class 9 to 12--are expected to be out by the end of the year.
Among the recent feedback under review is the depiction of Jaisalmer as part of the Maratha Empire in the Class 8 Social Science textbook, sources told ANI.
Chaitanya Raj Singh, a descendant of Jaisalmer's former royal family, criticised the NCERT Class 8 social science textbook for portraying the Rajput state as part of the Maratha Empire.
Calling the depiction "historically misleading and factually baseless", Singh urged Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to "correct" what he termed "erroneous, malicious, and agenda-driven content".
Objections have also been raised over the portrayal of other regional histories.
Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed disappointment over the removal of the 1817 Paika Rebellion from the Class 8 history textbook. Calling it a "watershed moment in Odisha's history", Patnaik said the exclusion undermines the legacy of the Paikas, who led a revolt against British rule nearly four decades before the 1857 uprising.
Sources said the committee is likely to examine representations made on topics including the Ahoms in Assam (in the Class 8 social science book), coverage of South Indian dynasties, and certain chapters in vocational and physical education books.
Actor R Madhavan also recently joined the chorus of voices questioning the revised syllabus, specifically pointing out the disproportionate focus on Mughal and British rule, while Southern Indian dynasties like the Cholas, Pandyas, Pallavas, and Cheras receive less attention.
The NCERT said feedback is routinely reviewed through institutional mechanisms. "It is a well-established practice that whenever substantial feedback or suggestions are received regarding the content or pedagogy of a textbook, a committee comprising domain experts is constituted to carefully deliberate on the matter and recommend appropriate actions."

MIM slams NCERT changes, role of RSS
1 2 Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the BJP govt at the Centre should include the book 'Muslims Against Partition' by Shamsul Islam in the NCERT-recommended syllabi. "This lie about partition is repeated time and again. At that time, not even 2–3% of Muslims had the right to vote. Only elitists such as zamindars and jagirdars were enfranchised. Even today, they (RSS and BJP) blame us (Muslims) for the partition of the country. How were we responsible for that? Those who fled, fled. Those who were loyal, stayed," he said. Responding to media queries regarding proposed changes to the NCERT syllabus concerning the partition of the country, he stated that the RSS was never part of India's freedom struggle and did not participate in the Quit India Movement, the Salt Satyagraha, or other agitations. "Why don't they include in the NCERT syllabus that the RSS hated freedom fighters more than the British did? The RSS always sided with the British. Let them teach students all of this as well. No, they only want to spread hatred against Muslims," Owaisi alleged. He claimed the RSS never participated in the independence movement. "The RSS's Hindutva ideology has always been contrary to the Constitution. It was wrong for the PM to praise an organisation that spreads hatred in the country," he asserted. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). NCERT module row: ‘Congress in pain because truth of Partition coming out,' says BJP
The Congress on Saturday accused the ruling BJP of 'interfering' with the functioning of the institutions and 'distorting' the country's history after a special module, released by the NCERT to mark 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day', held Jinnah, the Congress, and then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for India's Partition. Calling the Congress the 'Rahul-Jinnah party', BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia took on Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and alleged that his thinking was similar to that of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) The BJP on Saturday slammed the Congress for questioning the NCERT's module on the Partition of India and said the opposition party is in pain because the 'truth' has been brought out. Replying to media queries on the issue, Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that the partition had taken place due to the Hindu Mahasabha and the Muslim League. He also took on the RSS, calling it the 'biggest villain' in the country's history. Hitting back, Bhatia said the Congress is in pain because the NCERT has brought a 'bitter truth' of India's Partition out for the students to study. 'The Rahul-Jinnah party was the first to feel the pain. And it won't be wrong to say that Jinnah and Rahul have the same thinking. Both have become synonymous with each other,' he told reporters at the BJP headquarters here. 'Jinnah had a poisonous thinking of appeasement and communalism. Rahul Gandhi and the Congress have the same thinking,' he charged. The BJP spokesperson said it is the right of the people to know why the Partition took place and whose failure it was. It happened because the 'ambition of the Congress and its leader' had taken precedence over national interest, he said without naming anyone. 'We all know that 'akhand Bharat' was partitioned on the basis of religion. This black spot in our history was a gift from the Congress,' he said. Bhatia said that while the people of the country and the BJP believe that the country should be run by the Constitution, the Congress thinks it should be run by Sharia law. 'Jinnah also said that there should be Sharia law. The Congress says that the reservation should be given to people on the basis of religion. This is what Jinnah also said,' he added. On the attack on the RSS, Bhatia said, 'Those who always betrayed India are raising questions on such a patriotic organisation whose aim is to preserve the heritage of India and make it stronger.' Error in teacher text for Class IV students kicks up row
An error in a draft of a teacher text prepared by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to teach students the new textbooks has kicked up a political row. The teachers' handbook for Environmental Science for Class IV students mentioned that freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose fled to Germany fearing the British. After the error kicked up a storm, the SCERT corrected it. It was also decided to seek an explanation from those responsible for the mistake. The error was noticed in a note pertaining to Subhas Chandra Bose in the teacher text. It said that 'Subhas who was Congress president resigned from the position and formed the new party Forward Bloc. Fearing the British administration, he fled to Germany and later formed the Indian National Army and fought against the British.' A row broke out over the interpretation that Subhas left the country fearing the British. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad came to the fore flaying the error. Those who had criticised Subhas by calling him names and drawing his cartoons were again trying to defame him by distorting history, the organisation alleged. Teachers and their organisations too had pointed out the error, prompting the SCERT to correct it in the handbook.
