German Shepherd goes into baby's bedroom then something amazing happens
It's not uncommon for new parents to be worried about their baby's sleeping habits. You want to make sure they're getting enough rest, that they're comfortable in their cot, and that they're not going to get themselves into dangerous positions in the middle of the night without you knowing.
For some parents, this can mean getting up multiple times in the night to check that their baby is okay, and it turns out that the same parental habits might actually exist in our pets, too. One mum was left gobsmacked when she saw her German Shepherd dog walk into her child's room - and was even more surprised by what happened next.
Jeannie Russell shared a video on TikTok that included footage from the baby monitor that she has set up in her child's room, which was positioned to film the cot so that Jeannie could see if anything was wrong with her baby during the night.
But when she checked the footage one morning, she was floored to see her 10-year-old German Shepherd approaching the cot and watching her baby for a moment to make sure the tot was alright - just as she would have done.
She captioned the video: "Watch my 10-year-old German Shepherd check on 'his' baby."
Commenters on the video were just as touched by the sweet interaction as the mum had been when she first saw it. Many of them said they were moved to tears by the dog's gesture, while others praised the pooch as "the best in the world".
One person wrote: "I'm not crying, you're crying."
Another added: "They truly are the best dogs in the world."
Are German Shepherd dogs good with children?
According to Pet Plan, German Shepherds are generally considered to be great family pets that tend to be gentle with children and other animals.
However, as with any dog breed, German Shepherds require proper training and socialisation before they can be considered safe around babies.
German Shepherds are not naturally aggressive dogs, but their protective instincts can make them hesitant when meeting strangers. They can also develop behavioural problems if they are left alone for too long or don't get enough exercise.
The dogs generally enjoy the company of their family, which makes them great family pets. However, this means they can also struggle with separation anxiety if you leave them on their own for too long.
Always do plenty of research before you commit to getting any breed of dog, and consider adopting from a shelter rather than buying.

Itemising the Emperor's new clothes - Ranaa Mirza-Ahmed

Ali appears at this year's Edinburgh Fringe as part of his debut comedy tour, Shabaz Ali: I Am Rich, You Are Poor. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The self-appointed 'King of Povvos' (slang for 'the poor') first came to prominence during lockdown, posting observational TikTok videos from his bedroom, often under his duvet or in a onesie. He quickly gained a following for satirising influencers' out-of-touch displays of wealth, such as designer ice cubes, expensive white sofas with toddlers, and £500 'distressed' jumpers masquerading as grunge. A secondary school chemistry teacher from Blackburn, Ali balances teaching with social media fame, giving his comedy a refreshingly grounded perspective. It's ironic that Ali mocks the excesses of influencer life when he himself is now an influencer — with two million followers on TikTok and 1.8 million on Instagram, plus brand collaborations, a book, a podcast, and a live tour. The difference is that Ali doesn't promote luxury lifestyles or aspirational consumerism; instead, he uses humour to question tone-deaf displays of wealth and bizarre celebrity behaviour at a time when many are facing financial hardship. His Fringe set revisits the material he's best known for but also nods to his heritage, exploring the dynamics of growing up in a Pakistani household, with particular scorn reserved for parental discipline and paternal aunts. This clearly struck a chord with many in the audience, judging by the laughter. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Ali keeps the show interactive with audience participation — but don't worry if you're in the front row; his banter remains cheekily affectionate rather than mocking. In conclusion, Shabaz Ali is likeable, relatable, and refreshingly unpretentious. His show is highly entertaining and a must-see for anyone who enjoys light-hearted satire and social commentary. Shabaz Ali: I'm Rich, You Are Poor is on at Assembly George Square Studios, Studio Two at 8.10pm, until Aug 23. Age 16+
