Railways launches ‘Round Trip Package' to ease festival rush

New Delhi, Aug 9 (UNI) The Union Ministry of Railways has unveiled an experimental scheme — Round Trip Package — designed to ease congestion and incentivise advance bookings for the upcoming Diwali and Chhath festivals.
Bookings for the scheme will open on August 14, said a Ministry official today.
Under the scheme, passengers booking both onward and return journeys within designated windows will be eligible for a 20% concession on the base fare of the return leg. The initiative is aimed at encouraging family travel and extended holiday plans.
Onward journeys must fall between October 13 and October 26, while return trips can be reserved between November 17 and December 1, using the 'connecting journey' feature, said the official about the key feature of the scheme.
The standard Advance Reservation Period (ARP) of 60 days will not be applicable for return tickets booked under this offer.
According to the official, several conditions will govern the scheme. Only confirmed tickets will be considered valid in both directions, and the same class and origin-destination (O-D) pair must be maintained for the round trip. Refunds will not be permitted for tickets booked under the scheme.
"The concession applies to all classes and trains — including special services — except those operating under the Flexi Fare system. No additional charges will be levied during charting for these PNRs. However, the use of other promotional offers, coupons, passes, or loyalty discounts will not be permitted alongside this scheme," said the official.
Both legs of the journey must be booked through the same channel — either online or at physical reservation counters.
Officials expressed hope that the initiative will help disperse peak traffic more evenly across the holiday period, mitigate last-minute rush, and offer a more comfortable travel experience for festival-bound families.

PM Modi arrives in Bengaluru to unveil infrastructure projects

Bengaluru, Aug 10 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bengaluru today to a grand and enthusiastic welcome from thousands of BJP workers, supporters, and local residents, transforming the city into a celebration zone under tight security. The visit, packed with landmark infrastructure events, is being hailed by party leaders as a historic step in Bengaluru's and Karnataka's development journey. The Prime Minister's first major stop will be the inauguration of Namma Metro's Yellow Line, a long-awaited 19.75-km corridor built at a cost of approximately Rs 7,160 crore. The new line, connecting R.V. Road to Bommasandra, is expected to directly benefit over eight lakh commuters daily, significantly reducing travel time between Bengaluru's central areas and the bustling industrial and IT hubs in the south. Officials said the Yellow Line will not only decongest some of the city's busiest roads but also improve last-mile connectivity to tech parks, industrial estates, and residential zones. In a move to further bolster Bengaluru's public transport network, Modi also will lay the foundation stone for Phase-3 of the Bengaluru Metro, an ambitious Rs 15,610-crore expansion project. This phase, once completed, will add several crucial corridors to the network, linking emerging residential layouts and commercial areas to the city's heart, thus easing pressure on existing routes. The day's significance extension beyond metro developments, with the Prime Minister will be the flagging off multiple Vande Bharat trains — high-speed, modern trains that symbolize India's rail transformation. The services include Bengaluru to Belagavi, Amritsar to Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, and Nagpur (Ajni) to Pune, each aimed at enhancing inter-city connectivity and reducing travel time for passengers. Railway officials noted that these routes were chosen for their high passenger demand and their potential to stimulate trade and tourism. Karthik Reddy, Deputy Inspector General and Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said comprehensive traffic management measures were in place for the Prime Minister's visit. 'We have already announced diversions to the public, and heavy vehicles have been moved to the city outskirts to ensure smooth movement. All traffic arrangements have been completed,' he said. Multiple agencies, including city police, special protection units, and railway security forces, coordinated to ensure a seamless schedule for the day. The Prime Minister's itinerary includes a high-profile public address in Electronic City, where he is expected to highlight his government's infrastructure push in Karnataka and its alignment with the vision of a developed India by 2047. BJP leaders see the visit as a crucial opportunity to showcase the Modi government's track record, especially in the run-up to upcoming political contests in the state. With banners, posters, and saffron flags lining key stretches of the city, and chants of 'Modi, Modi' echoing at gathering points, Bengaluru wore a festive look. For many residents, the day's events represented more than just project inaugurations — they symbolized aspirations for faster, more efficient mobility and a boost to the city's standing as India's tech and innovation capital. Innovation can start anywhere, says Telangana IT Minister Sridhar Babu

Hyderabad, Aug 10 (UNI) Telangana IT and Industry Minister D Sridhar Babu has said innovation can start anywhere, from Hyderabad or a remote village in the state, and not necessarily from the Silicon Valley all the time. Addressing the closing ceremony of 'The August Fest 2025', Asia's largest start-up festival held at HITEX, Madhapur last night, he congratulated the organisers and several individuals who contributed quietly to the growth of Hyderabad's IT ecosystem. He lauded August Fest founder Kiran for his role in nurturing the city's start-up culture, while Kiran described the Minister as 'a politician who works like an entrepreneur.' Highlighting the city's robust start-up growth, the Minister said Hyderabad-based start-ups raised USD 571 million in 2024 — a 160 per cent jump from 2023 — across 81 funding rounds. HealthTech funding surged by 2,139 per cent to USD 300 million, FinTech nearly doubled to USd 105 million, late-stage funding climbed 701 per cent to USD 297 million, and early-stage funding rose 73 per cent to USd 233 million. Between January 2020 and May 2025, the city produced over 2,500 start-ups, attracting USD 2.1 billion in funding, accounting for 99.7 per cent of Telangana's total start-up capital, he said. Women-led ventures are thriving, with Hyderabad ranking sixth in India. A total of 531 such start-ups have raised USD 417 million. Through STPI Hyderabad, over 1,400 start-ups have received support worth Rs 574 crore, 44 per cent of them led by women, the minister said. Global corporations such as FedEx, London Stock Exchange, Uber, Micron and Eli Lilly are expanding operations in Telangana. The state is developing a 200-acre AI City, projected to be one of the largest AI hubs in the world, while Genome Valley's 2,000 acres have made Hyderabad Asia's leading biotech cluster. Recalling the early days of the city's IT journey, Sridhar Babu credited Mythrivanam in Ameerpet — home to the first STPI Hyderabad in 1992 — as the starting point of Hyderabad's technology growth. He said the government would consider J.A. Chowdary's proposal to declare Mythrivanam a heritage building in recognition of its historic role. 'The future of Telangana's start-up ecosystem belongs to everyone — coders, farmers, artists and women entrepreneurs. Every challenge, from climate change to urban congestion, is also a start-up opportunity,' the Minister said, urging participants to collaborate beyond their usual circles. 'Hyderabad is now a blazing beacon on the world's innovation radar. We're not following trends — we're setting them. The next big idea that changes the world could be yours.' UNI VV SSP

Op Sindoor success linked to Bengaluru's innovation: PM Modi

Bengaluru, Aug 10 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today emphasised Bengaluru's critical role in India's Defence technology and the Make in India mission, linking the city's vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth to the success of Operation Sindoor. The operation, which involved striking terrorist camps deep inside enemy territory and swiftly overpowering Pakistan's forces, has been hailed as a demonstration of India's growing military prowess powered by indigenous technology and innovation. Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line and the foundation laying of Phase 3, PM Modi praised the contributions of Karnataka's youth to Defence manufacturing and technology, underlining how Bengaluru is emerging as a crucial hub not only for IT but also for high-end Defence production. He called upon Karnataka's talent pool to lead the vision of an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) in the tech sector. "The success of Operation Sindoor is a testament to the strength of our technology and Defence capabilities built on the foundation of Make in India,' said the Prime Minister. 'Bengaluru's youth and Karnataka's industrial ecosystem have played a major role in this achievement.' The Prime Minister described Bengaluru as a city deeply rooted in tradition and culture but simultaneously poised at the forefront of progress and innovation. He paid tribute to the city's founder, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, highlighting his vision of a city that balances heritage with development. On the urban infrastructure front, PM Modi inaugurated the much-awaited Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro, which will connect critical areas from RV Road to Bommasandra, easing travel for millions and enhancing connectivity between important residential and business hubs. He also laid the foundation stone for Phase 3 of the metro which includes the Orange Line, expected to serve 2.5 million daily passengers, further strengthening Bengaluru's public transport network. In a major boost to regional and national connectivity, the Prime Minister flagged off three new Vande Bharat Express trains. The Bengaluru-Belagavi route, in particular, is expected to significantly bolster trade and tourism between Karnataka's commercial centers. Additional trains running between Nagpur-Pune and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Amritsar will serve millions of passengers, including pilgrims, fostering greater integration and economic activity. Detailing India's impressive economic growth trajectory, PM Modi noted that over the past 11 years, the country has risen from the world's 10th largest economy to the top 5 and is rapidly advancing towards becoming a top 3 economy. This growth is attributed to relentless reforms and transformational initiatives such as expanding metro rail networks from just 5 cities in 2014 to 24 cities today, creating more than 1,000 kilometers of metro lines — now the third largest metro network globally. The Prime Minister also drew attention to India's achievements in expanding its railway electrification, airport infrastructure, and national waterways, noting a doubling of electrified rail routes and an increase in airports from 74 to over 160. The number of operational national waterways has grown from 3 to 30, providing enhanced multimodal transport options. On social infrastructure, PM Modi highlighted the expansion of health and education facilities, with the number of AIIMS institutions growing from 7 to 22 and medical colleges from 387 to 704, adding over 100,000 new medical seats, greatly benefiting the middle class and aspiring youth. The number of IITs and IIITs has also significantly increased, broadening access to higher education. He further noted the government's push to improve quality of life by constructing over 40 million pucca houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and building over 120 million toilets, enhancing dignity, hygiene, and safety, particularly for women across the country. Digital transformation was another key focus, with PM Modi citing India's leadership in digital payments via UPI, which handles over 50 percent of the world's real-time transactions. More than 2,200 government services are now available on mobile platforms, and initiatives like the UMANG app and DigiLocker have simplified citizens' access to government services and documents. India is also investing in emerging technologies such as AI-powered threat detection and aiming for global leadership in AI and space technology, including the development of a Made-in-India chip. Calling for stronger emphasis on technological self-reliance, the Prime Minister urged Karnataka and Bengaluru's tech industry to prioritize the development of high-quality, zero-defect, zero-impact products that maintain environmental standards. He emphasized that innovation and manufacturing must go hand-in-hand to sustain India's growth story. In governance, PM Modi praised ongoing reforms, such as the decriminalization of certain laws and the introduction of competency-based training programs for government employees under Mission Karmayogi. He encouraged state governments to identify and remove outdated criminal provisions and adopt new learning frameworks to enhance administrative efficiency. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Karnataka, through collaborative efforts between the central and state governments and active citizen participation, would reach new heights of development and contribute significantly to the vision of a developed India.
