Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter Shoot Rocket Classic-Record 62s to Share 1st-Round Lead

Al Arabiya9 hours ago

Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter each shot 10-under 62 on Thursday to break the Rocket Classic record and share the first-round lead.
Detroit Golf Club has been one of the easiest courses since the PGA Tour made it an annual stop in 2019. A pair of Korn Ferry graduates took full advantage. Potgieter, the 20-year-old South African who grew up in Australia, started at No. 10 and set a tournament record with a 7-under 29 on the back nine. He added three birdies on his back nine and caught the left edge on a 12-foot putt on his final hole. Potgieter and the 35-year-old Roy each had an eagle and eight birdies in bogey-free rounds. As well as Roy and Potgieter played, they can't get comfortable on a short course with greens that are even more receptive than usual with recent rain.
Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman, and Mark Hubbard were a stroke back after matching the previous tournament record of 63. Andrew Putnam shot a 64, and two-time major champion Zach Johnson was in the group another shot back. While the course is easy as usual, the competition is relatively strong for the tournament that many top players have skipped in the past. The field includes nine of the top 50 players in the world, led by fifth-ranked Collin Morikawa, who opened with a 69. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, the Travelers Championship winner last week, is No. 7 in the world. He shot a 68.

Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal Advances to Club World Cup Round of 16 with 2-0 Win over Pachuca

Salem Aldawsari scored in the 22nd minute and Al Hilal beat Pachuca 2-0 on Thursday night to clinch a berth in the Club World Cup round of 16. Marcus Leonardo also scored for Al Hilal, the only team outside Europe and the Americas to advance out of group play. Al Hilal will next face English club Manchester City on Monday in Orlando, Florida. Aldawsari, attacking from the left, scored with the ball bouncing off his right foot and soaring over the head of Pachuca goalie Sebastian Jurado to the right side of the goal. The game drew 14,147 to Geodis Park, which has a capacity of 30,000, The Associated Press reported. As Pachuca kept trying to keep the pace up, Leonardo scored his first goal of the tournament in the last minute of extra time, dribbling swiftly past Jurado and sending a left-footed shot in to secure Al Hilal's spot in the round of 16. Al Hilal is the second team from Group H to move on, as Real Madrid clinched through a 3-0 victory against RB Salzburg. Pachuca ended the tournament winless. 'Every player wants to score, my goal was ambitious, and scoring was the cherry on top,' said Aldawsari. Al-Hilal coach Simone Inzaghi said: "Our goal was to achieve (being in) the group of the best teams in the world. "It was not an easy task, but the team was well united. It fought during the three games for a great objective ... we were not coming here just to have fun, we were coming here to play a World Cup and we wanted to reach this stage. "Now we'll have to play against Manchester City ... it's one of the greatest teams in the world. These are the games where you can improve and you can mature as a team, so I'm very proud."

Lavelle Returns to the USWNT and Scores in 4-0 Win Over Ireland

Rose Lavelle scored in her first national team match of the year after ankle surgery, and the US defeated Ireland 4–0 on Thursday night. Avery Patterson, Sam Coffey, and Alyssa Thompson also scored for the US. Lavelle last played for the national team in December against the Netherlands. Patterson, making her third start for the national team, scored on a header off a short corner from Lavelle in the 18th minute. It was her first international goal. Coffey added a goal before halftime with a shot that cut across to the far post. It was her third national team goal and second in the last three games. Lavelle made it 3–0 in the 53rd, scoring handily off a well-placed pass from Ally Sentnor. Thompson ran the ball from the center line, danced around a defender, and finished with a blast from atop the box in the 63rd. Coach Emma Hayes gave her Europe-based players–including Lindsey Heaps, Catarina Macario, and Emily Fox–time off after their seasons. The exception was defender Naomi Girma, who is working her way back from a calf injury. Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey, who plays for the Seattle Reign, and Lilly Reale, a defender for Gotham, started for the US in their national team debuts. The youngest player on the squad, 18-year-old Jordyn Bugg, made her debut as a second-half substitute. Six of the 11 starters had less than 10 appearances with the national team. Lavelle, with 111 appearances on the team, was one of the veterans in the lineup along with defender Emily Sonnett. The US has faced Ireland 16 times and never dropped a match. The Irish have scored just one goal against the US.
