By: Malay Mail Text Size: The AirAsia Flight D7 506 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled to arrive in Incheon, lands at Gimpo Internationa Airport on August 13. — Yonhap pic SEOUL: Passengers on an AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul's Incheon International Airport reportedly faced a delay of more than two hours after the aircraft unexpectedly landed at Gimpo International Airport nearby without prior notice. Korea JoongAng Daily reported that Flight D7 506 circled in Korean airspace before landing at Gimpo — around 40 km away — at 8.08pm on Wednesday, instead of its scheduled 7.50pm arrival at Incheon. 'A passenger mentioned we were at Gimpo, not Incheon, and even the crew looked surprised and asked us to confirm,' a 38-year-old passenger surnamed Kim was quoted saying. 'Once the crew realised it really was Gimpo, they became visibly flustered. Many passengers had already begun taking out their luggage, thinking we had arrived.' Incheon International Airport is located about 50km west of central Seoul, while Gimpo International Airport is about 15km away. Kim said passengers were told conflicting explanations, including turbulence and a fuel shortage, but there was no sign the plane had been refuelled. 'Even when we finally got to Incheon, no apology was given,' she added. A video recorded on board captured a flight attendant saying the plane had 'run low on fuel' and that the landing at Gimpo was an emergency measure, with the pilot checking if the flight could continue to Incheon. The aircraft stayed at Gimpo for about two hours before departing at 10.03pm and arriving at Incheon at 10.56pm. Kim's 44-year-old husband with the surname Choi, reportedly said passengers were not given clear information. 'There was no clear explanation about what the emergency was or how long we would be delayed … It was very frustrating,' he said. The cause of the diversion has not been officially confirmed. AirAsia has not commented on the incident. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Cooperation key to security, growth on Sabah's east coast
Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Victor flagging off KMJG Convoy participants. LAHAD DATU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) continues to stress the importance of strong collaboration between local communities and security forces to maintain peace and safety across Sabah's east coast. Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos said that such cooperation is essential in ensuring regional stability, which in turn supports the tourism industry and economic development. 'The community acts as the eyes, ears, and voice of the Government, working hand-in-hand with security forces and international partners to keep the east coast secure,' he said. 'This region is not only rich in natural beauty but is also safe and peaceful to visit. It should be experienced in person—not just seen through social media. 'We hope people will come here as tourists, and perhaps, later, even as investors,' he added. Victor made the remarks during the District-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 convoy flag-off ceremony at Dataran Esscom. He also expressed pride and appreciation that Dataran Esscom was chosen as one of the stopover points for the patriotic convoy and hoped the National Day celebration programme would proceed smoothly, safely, and with lively participation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? AirAsia flight ends up at different South Korean airport
While 'turbulence' had apparently forced the plane to divert to Gimpo, the manner in which the situation was handled had left passengers fuming. (Air Asia pic) PETALING JAYA : Low-cost carrier AirAsia has been criticised after a flight from Kuala Lumpur to South Korea landed at the wrong airport. AirAsia Flight D7 506 landed at Gimpo International Airport instead of Incheon Airport as scheduled, the Korea Herald reported. While 'turbulence' had apparently forced the plane to divert to Gimpo, the manner in which the situation was handled had left passengers fuming. According to passengers, the captain had announced that they had arrived at Incheon Airport, only for them to realise they were in fact at Gimpo when they looked out of the windows and checked their phones. A passenger, identified as Lee Mi-hyun, said the cabin crew were unaware that they had landed at Gimpo 'until passengers told them'. 'One crew member even said she needed to call her parents, who were waiting for her at Incheon International Airport,' Lee was quoted as saying, adding that 'everyone panicked'. She also claimed that the crew failed to adequately manage the situation during the two hours they had to wait before departing for Incheon. She said stranded passengers were not offered water, leaving those with children upset. 'Some even said they would rather get off at Gimpo before the plane departed for Incheon.' Lee said the captain and crew apologised over the public announcement system as the plane headed to Incheon. Other passengers hit out at the airline for failing to provide a clear explanation. A passenger, identified as Ryu, said during the two hours before departing for Incheon, no clear explanation was given over the landing error nor was there 'any effort to reassure passengers'. AirAsia X, in a statement, clarified that the flight was diverted to Gimpo for refuelling following air traffic congestion at Incheon due to adverse weather conditions. AirAsia said the captain followed standard operating procedures, including keeping passengers informed of the diversion in English initially. However, there was a miscommunication in the cabin crew announcement upon landing, which the captain promptly clarified, it added. AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said: 'We will also review our internal announcements and onboard information-sharing processes to ensure greater clarity in such situations.' Benyamin said travel vouchers would be offered to affected passengers as a goodwill gesture.

AirAsia X Apologises After Flight Lands At Gimpo Airport Instead Of Incheon Airport
Flight delays and emergency landings due to weather turbulence are nothing out of the ordinary. However, in most cases, passengers are informed of such situations before or while they are taking place. Imagine the confusion and disappointment of passengers who found themselves landing 35km away from their intended destination. Earlier this week, it was reported that AirAsia X flight D7 506 from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul's Incheon International Airport was diverted to Gimpo International Airport due to adverse weather and air traffic congestion. As a result, the onward flight to Incheon was delayed by two hours. The captain announced that they had landed safely at Incheon, but passengers soon realised something was wrong after checking their phones, which indicated they were actually at Gimpo instead. The cabin crew were reportedly unaware of the situation until passengers informed them that they were at the wrong airport. A video circulating online shows an announcement stating that the landing at Gimpo was an emergency measure, as the aircraft was running low on fuel. AirAsia later issued an official statement apologising and clarifying the situation. As previously mentioned, the flight was diverted to Gimpo International Airport due to adverse weather and air traffic congestion. The aircraft also needed to refuel before continuing to its intended destination. As compensation, AirAsia will be offering travel vouchers to affected guests. 'We thank our guests for their understanding and cooperation during this operational adjustment, which was necessary to ensure the safety of everyone on board,' the statement read. Following the news, many took to Twitter to share their reactions. Some criticised AirAsia for the miscommunication and delay, while others remarked that they would have been content landing at Gimpo International Airport, as it is closer to the city centre than Incheon International Airport. A few joked that passengers should have been grateful the plane did not land in North Korea. Whatever the case, it is a relief to know that everyone was safe and eventually arrived at the correct destination. Let us hope that, should such a situation arise again, both cabin crew and passengers will be kept well informed. Sources: MalayMail, TheStar
