LAHAD DATU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) continues to stress the importance of strong collaboration between local communities and security forces to maintain peace and safety across Sabah's east coast. Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos said that such cooperation is essential in ensuring regional stability, which in turn supports the tourism industry and economic development. 'The community acts as the eyes, ears, and voice of the Government, working hand-in-hand with security forces and international partners to keep the east coast secure,' he said. 'This region is not only rich in natural beauty but is also safe and peaceful to visit. It should be experienced in person—not just seen through social media. 'We hope people will come here as tourists, and perhaps, later, even as investors,' he added. Victor made the remarks during the District-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 convoy flag-off ceremony at Dataran Esscom. He also expressed pride and appreciation that Dataran Esscom was chosen as one of the stopover points for the patriotic convoy and hoped the National Day celebration programme would proceed smoothly, safely, and with lively participation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Security in Sabah's east coast eases sailors

Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Victor flagging off the participants of Sail Malaysia: Passage to the East 2025. LAHAD DATU: International sailors taking part in the 'Sail Malaysia: Passage to the East 2025' felt at ease during their journey along Sabah's east coast, crediting the strong security measures by our security forces. Sail Malaysia 2025 Fleet Commodore or Team Leader, Simon Hunt, said the Malaysian Government and Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) are doing a fantastic job and very helpful. 'We feel safe and we have always seen you (security forces) and corresponded. It's been clear, fantastic and helpful. 'You could not have done a better job for us and we very much appreciate that. You have a beautiful place in Sabah, the people are wonderful,' he said. According to Simon, they enjoyed visiting the villages and seeing the children as well as communities here. They are also looking forward to getting down further south east of Sabah and enjoy some diving. Simon said this while delivering his speech, representing the participants, during the flag-off programme officiated by Esscom Commander DCP Datuk Victor Sanjos, Saturday. Victor, in his speech, welcomed the participants to Sabah's east coast. He said the participants' yearly presence is truly a blessing, as it proves that the east coast of Sabah is secure, in fact very safe. 'The Madani Government under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Esscom are committed to ensuring the security level is at the highest and thus it is one of the Government's priorities; and for reference since Esscom was formed, we recorded zero kidnapping incident since January 2020. 'I hope this will give you peace of mind to sail and enjoy 'this paradise' of our spectacular Sabah,' he said. According to Victor, Sabah, 'The Land Below the Wind', especially east coast area, is more than just a geographical reference; it is a symbol of the State's serene beauty, rich cultural tapestry and commitment in preserving its natural treasures. For travellers seeking adventure, cultural immersion, or simply a peaceful retreat, Sabah offers a unique destination that lives up to its poetic name. 'I really hope, through this programme, you can experience the safety while enjoying the beautiful scenery. Bring back the good memories to your country and let your people experience the same, enjoying 'this paradise' of our spectacular Sabah. 'Thank you to all participants for a very good cooperation with our escort ships and boats. Everyone is working as a team. We really appreciate that you are making our job a lot easier. There's still a long way to go after this. We hope you will enjoy your sailing and if you have problems or need assistance just inform us,' he said. Victor also extended his appreciation to Sazli Kamal Basha, the Managing Director of Sail Malaysia Passage to the East 2025 (organiser) for doing a great job and making sure all the participants' needs are taken care of. This year's programme is participated by a total of 23 vessels with 51 participants from eight countries all over the world, such as Australia, United States of America, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Germany, Panama, Isle Of Man and Singapore. Google Maps Trekker spotted walking through Bukit Bintang

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Stills from the video. - Social media KUALA LUMPUR: Navigation apps such as Waze and Google Maps have become part of everyday life in Malaysia and around the world, helping people plan their journeys more easily. In addition to maps, Google also offers features such as Street View on both Google Maps and Google Earth, allowing users to see streets and buildings through panoramic images. Most people are aware that these images are usually captured by specially equipped Google Street View cars fitted with 360-degree cameras. However, not many realise that in areas inaccessible to vehicles, the images are collected on foot by individuals carrying portable camera systems. Recently, a video went viral showing a man walking around Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur carrying a large backpack camera system for Google Maps. The video, uploaded on TikTok by @wbbb_ttt, showed the man crossing pedestrian walkways and using an overhead bridge, attracting the attention of passers-by. The TikTok user remarked that the backpack looked heavy but admitted being excited at the thought of possibly appearing on Street View. Google refers to the portable system as the Trekker, a backpack-mounted 360-degree camera designed to capture narrow streets, pedestrian areas, and other locations only accessible on foot. Social media users responded with a mix of amusement and curiosity, with some joking that it looked like a fun job, while others asked how they could apply to be a Trekker. For many, the sight of Google Maps 'walking' through Bukit Bintang was a reminder of how digital technology continues to map even the busiest corners of the city. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? SINGAPORE: The sights and sounds of Sabah came alive at Marina Square on Saturday as the Sabah Fest Singapore Edition 2025 showcased North Borneo's culture through music, dance, food, and heritage. Visitors enjoyed traditional performances, food products, and crafts that reflected the state's diverse ethnic traditions. For Sabahans living in Singapore, the event was a chance to reconnect with their roots, while Singaporeans were introduced to Sabah's cultural richness. Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai and Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore Datuk Indera Azfar Mohd Mustafa jointly launched the celebration. Joniston, who is also chairman of Sabah Tourism Board, urged the Sabah community abroad to play their part in promoting the state internationally, highlighting Singapore's position as a regional hub with direct flight connections to Kota Kinabalu. He described Sabah Fest as an ideal introduction for first-time visitors, adding that it builds momentum for Visit Malaysia 2026 and complements the state's Explore Sabah campaign. The event also marked the launch of the 'Stamp and Feel Sabah' campaign, encouraging Singaporeans to explore destinations across the state, with both Joniston and Azfar praising the Sabah Trade and Tourism Office Singapore for spearheading the initiative with support from partners. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
