'The Mercenary': Why Eagles Should Sign Jadeveon Clowney For One More Run originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Pro Bowl edge rusher Josh Sweat parted ways when he signed with the Arizona Cardinals. As a result, the team could be on the lookout for someone to replace him.

Maybe that help is already here.
After all, Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt and Azeez Ojulari all either have "star quality'' or are anticipated to display it with more snaps coming to the group in 2025 as part of coordinator Vic Fangio's front seven.
Or...maybe, as the Eagles push to repeat as Super Bowl champions, a "mercenary'' might do.
Enter 32-year-old edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney.
Could he be a suitable fit as a helper?
The Carolina Panthers announced this offseason that they were cutting former Pro Bowl edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney...and so incredibly, given the fact that he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, when he signs again he will join his seventh different team in the last eight seasons.

That's a mercenary. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Oh, and in the last few years, he's also signed short-term contracts that end up costing his team various salaries. So he's not trying to break the bank.
Just two seasons ago with the Baltimore Ravens, he racked up 9.5 sacks in 15 games started. In 2024, he missed three games, but he was still able to get 5.5 sacks and 46 total tackles.
Could the Eagles use those 9.5 sacks? Those 5.5 sacks? While the reigning Super Bowl champions pay him the minimum to chase a ring?
One year. One time. One mercenary.

NFL legend Peyton Manning shares thoughts on former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud

Former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud has had a pretty remarkable start to his NFL career. He was the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year and has led the Houston Texans to two straight playoff appearances. Of course, as with many sports fans, they want more and they want it now. Stroud took some criticism in his second season, as it seemed like a bit of a regression, but NFL legend Peyton Manning begs to differ. In an event with Fanatics, both Peyton and Eli Manning took the stage with Stroud, Bryce Young, and Celeb Williams. In a matter of just 63 seconds, Peyton heaped the praise on Stroud, shutting down anyone who thinks he isn't doing enough. "...I didn't win a playoff game 'til my sixth year. He's two for two." - Peyton Manning Manning talked about how hard it is to come into the league and play well as a rookie, and then began the compliments of how well the former Buckeye prepares in watching film and doing study. He continued on comparing Stroud's beginning to his own NFL start, saying, "He went to the playoffs in his second year. He was 22. Let's be careful saying it was a down year. I didn't win a playoff game 'til my sixth year. He's two for two." That's big time coming from one of the all-time NFL greats. While Stroud's numbers weren't as strong in year two, throwing for fewer yards and touchdowns and more than doubling his interceptions, he also had to navigate a number of injuries to his offensive line (he was sacked 52 times, which was second most in the NFL) as well as injuries to his top three receivers. Manning also points out that after such a strong rookie campaign, teams had more film to watch to make adjustments. The Texans are looking to build on the success of the past two seasons and have added some more firepower to the team. With a healthy roster, Stroud is poised to take another step forward in his third year.

Pierre LeBrun's Expected 'Sweet Spot' for Maple Leafs-John Tavares Agreement

Pierre LeBrun's Expected 'Sweet Spot' for Maple Leafs-John Tavares Agreement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Veteran forward John Tavares made it clear at season's end he wants to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but one week from the opening of NHL free agency, no extension has been signed. Advertisement The veteran just completed the final season of the seven-year, $77 million contract he signed in 2018 and remains in daily discussions with Leafs general manager Brad Treliving and agent Pat Brisson. According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, while discussions are still ongoing on a daily basis, the sides have yet to reach an agreement on terms and compensation. 'I think both sides probably would have been surprised a month ago if you would have told them they still hadn't had an extension done one week away from July 1,' Pierre LeBrun said. 'But I will also say this: it's not like they've hit a wall in talks. The dialogue continues almost daily.' Tavares is reportedly not expected to chase the highest offer available on the open market. Advertisement Daily Faceoff projects Tavares to sign a three-year, $23.7 million contract this offseason with a cap hit of $7.9 million per season. Instead of getting there, it's believed that Tavares would be willing to take less than his true market value to stay in Toronto, where he lives year-round with his wife and children. Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares (91) has expressed interest in staying with the E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images 'I believe that if the Leafs put $20 million over four years in front of John Tavares, that he would sign it,' LeBrun said. 'Neither side is there quite yet, but I think that ends up being the sweet spot if this gets done here in the next seven days.' Comparable deals signed of late include Matt Duchene's four-year, $4.5 million AAV contract with the Dallas Stars and Brock Nelson's $7.5 million AAV deal over three years with the Colorado Avalanche. Advertisement LeBrun noted that Tavares, who outproduced Nelson last season, isn't seeking top dollar but still hopes for fair value before July 1, thus the delay in an agreement with Toronto one week from the start of free agency. The Lakers are moving up in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft

Historically, second-round draft picks in the NBA don't amount to much. Sometimes, they can yield a rotation player, but that tends to be the exception rather than the rule. But over the past several years, the Los Angeles Lakers have found some diamonds in the rough in the second round. Players such as Ivica Zubac and Max Christie have panned out and become quite useful players in time. Advertisement The Lakers were going to have the No. 55 pick in the second round of this year's draft, which is taking place on Thursday. But they reportedly agreed to send that pick and some cash to the Chicago Bulls in order to acquire the No. 45 pick. According to the Los Angeles Times' Brad Turner, the team gave up $2.5 million to acquire the No. 45 pick. Unfortunately, that means it will be hard-capped at the second apron, at least for now. On draft day 2022, the Lakers executed a trade to acquire a second-round pick that became Christie, and three years earlier, they traded for Talen Horton-Tucker, who had been taken by the Orlando Magic in the second round, on draft day. They will be hoping to find another hidden gem this time around. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: The Lakers are moving up in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft
