Suvendu Adhikari demands action against Mamata Banerjee over booth officers remark

India Today29-07-2025
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take suo motu action against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her recent remarks directed at Booth Level Officers (BLOs).Adhikari alleged that Banerjee issued a veiled threat to BLOs during an administrative meeting held in Birbhum on Monday, where she instructed them to ensure that voter names were not arbitrarily removed from the electoral rolls. He claimed her statements interfere with the autonomy of the Election Commission and amount to undue political pressure.advertisementIn a letter to the Election Commission, Adhikari stated that Banerjee's remarks were a "direct attack on democracy" and accused her of attempting to influence the electoral process.
Posting on his official handle on social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter), Adhikari wrote:'By instructing BLOs to ensure that no names are removed from the Voter List, it is clearly an unauthorised attempt to dilute the voter lists for political gain. This is unacceptable. How can elections be fair if the Chief Minister pressures officials and challenges the ECI's autonomy?'He further added that he has formally urged the Election Commission to take suo motu cognisance of the Chief Minister's statements, which he claims interfere with the duties of BLOs and "undermine the ECI's authority".Mamata Banerjee's assertion that BLOs are merely State Govt Employees and her attempt to intimidate and manipulate the electoral process by instructing BLOs to ensure that no names are removed from the Voter List, is clearly an unauthorized attempt to dilute the Voter Lists for pic.twitter.com/mnbxVHAOfA— Suvendu Adhikari (@SuvenduWB) July 29, 2025Banerjee, while addressing government officials in Birbhum on Monday, stated that BLOs should be cautious not to arbitrarily strike off names from the voter list and reminded them that, "BLOs are state government employees and will have to work under the state government after elections too." Her comments were made in the context of widespread voter list revisions currently underway. The BJP sees the remarks as an attempt to influence voter list management and exert pressure on BLOs, who are trained and deputed by the Election Commission for electoral duties.- Ends

Smart meters: Karnataka HC stays probe against George, Bescom till August 20

BENGALURU: The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday stayed further proceedings against energy minister KJ George, Bescom MD Mahantesh Bilagi and another official in the case pertaining to a special court directing the Lokayukta police to submit a report on a private complaint filed by three BJP MLAs over the alleged irregularities in inviting tenders for supply of smart meters. Justice MI Arun passed the interim order staying the proceedings till August 20 and issued notice to the complainants after hearing the petitions filed by George, Bilagi and another Bescom official questioning the legality of the order passed by the special court. Their counsel argued that the order passed by the special court is against the law as no prior sanction was obtained from the competent authority to prosecute the petitioners, who are public servants, as mandated under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The complainants, MLAs Ashwath Narayan CN, SR Vishwanath and Dheeraj Muniraj, approached the Lokayukta police on April 21. Before the Lokayukta police initiated action, the complainants filed a private complaint before the special court, which registered it for offences under the provisions of BNS and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Bike DCM DK Shivakumar rode has Rs 18.5K in traffic penalties

BENGALURU: A day after Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar was seen riding a two-wheeler on Hebbal flyover during his inspection, the BJP and JDS trolled Shivakumar and said the two-wheeler has many traffic violation cases registered against it. JDS, on its official X handle, said a sum of Rs 18,500 has to be paid as penalty for various traffic violations. The video of Shivakumar riding the two-wheeler on Hebbal flyover went viral on Tuesday. The JDS, on its social media platforms, tagged Hebbal Traffic Police and urged it to take action. Following this, police summoned the owner who paid Rs 1,000 and assured police that he would pay the remaining later. The regional party, stating that the vehicle has more than 34 traffic violation cases against it, urged Shivakumar to stop photo shoots and reels for publicity, and fulfil his responsibilities as a minister. The BJP questioned why there is a separate law for the Deputy CM. 'Traffic police should charge additional Rs 500 from Shivakumar for wearing a half-helmet,' the party said.

Bihar SIR: SC seeks EC reply on deletion of 65 lakh voters

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought the reply of the Election Commission of India (ECI) over a plea which alleged that the poll body had not shared the list of names of those who were removed from the Bihar voters' list after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) conducted in the state. A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan, and N K Singh issued the notice on the application filed by NGO ADR. Seeking an urgent hearing, Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for ADR, said, 'We have filed an IA…the draft roll they have published says 65 lakh voters' names have been omitted… They have not given a list of those names…they have said people are dead, have migrated… They should disclose who the 65 lakhs are, who are dead, who have migrated…'. Bhushan said the names have been included in the list without the recommendations of the Booth Level Officers (BLOs). 'BLOs when forwarding the forms have said this person is not recommended by BLO…Whether BLOs have recommended or not recommended… this information will be very important,' Bhushan added. Justice Kant said, according to ECI's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), every representative of political parties would be provided with the list at the block level. Bhushan, however, claimed that this was not done. 'They have not conveyed. In case they have given to some political party, reasons are not given,' he said. Justice Kant said it was only a draft preliminary list, and reasons may be given when the final list is released. The counsel appearing for the Election Commission said the poll body was obligated to make the draft roll public. He said, 'We can show that we have shared the list with the political party representatives.' The bench asked ECI to state all it had to say in its reply. 'If you have supplied, please give a list of political parties to whom you have supplied, so that Mr Bhushan's client can collect information from those authorised representatives,' said Justice Kant, giving the Commission time till Saturday. Justice Kant added that the court will ensure that every voter who is likely to be affected gets the requisite information.
