Woodbury County Board of Supervisors to discuss possible hiring freeze next week
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Work on the fiscal year 2026 budget will continue next week for the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors.
A clerical error found on this week's agenda is pushing action back to next week. On Tuesday, the board had to table an official action on a possible 2026 hiring freeze. Supervisors say a freeze on hiring could save several hundred thousand dollars.
Sioux City residents speak out on proposed property tax levy
According to the board, an Iowa property tax bill signed into law back in 2023 continues to produce budget constraints.
'We understand that every decision we make could affect someone's personal budget, their homes, things they want to do with their children, providing things for their household,' board chair Dan Bittinger said. 'And we're taking all of that into consideration. It's very hard because we don't just see, at the end of the day, it's just a dollar. Our job per Iowa Code is to handle the budget and the finance for the county, and that's our job. However, we have to understand that every decision has a real-life implication.'
Supervisors also tabled a proposed funding request from the Siouxland Initiative because of budget constraints. Bittinger says that after supervisors approve the budget, the board could take another look at the request.

Former Senator Jim Carlin announces candidacy for 2026 race
IOWA (KCAU) — Jim Carlin, a former Iowa Senator, has announced his candidacy for the 2026 Senate Race. Carlin served as a lawmaker from 2017 to 2022. In his announcement, Carlin points a finger at Joni Ernst, indicating she hasn't followed through with her promises. 'Iowans deserve a voice in Washington D.C. who actually listens to them and representsthem – not big donors and special interests. More than that, Iowans deservesomeone who genuinely cares about them and will work to make their lives better. Thereare enough self-serving establishment politicians in Washington. President Donald needs America First allies, not adversaries,' Carlin stated in a release. Senator Ernst has a proven record of conservative leadership—cutting waste, securing the border, and making Washington squeal to keep Iowans' hard-earned money in their own pockets. And she delivers for our families, farmers, and veterans. Iowans already saw through Carlin's last failed campaign, and they'll reject his desperate attempt at relevance again in 2026.'
