Government arm-twisting villagers for Siang mega dam: Congress in Arunachal
The Arunachal Pradesh unit of Congress has accused Pema Khandu's Bharatiya Janata Party government of arm-twisting villagers to support the Siang Upper Multi-purpose Project (SUMP) in the central part of the State.
There is no official word on the size of the hydropower project. Still, activists and villagers fearing large-scale displacement claim SUMP would entail a mega dam across the Siang River to generate 11,500 megawatts of electricity. India is reportedly pushing the project as a counterweight to China's planned 60,000 MW project across the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet's Medog county.
The Yarlung Tsangpo is the upstream of Siang, which meets two other rivers – Dibang and Lohit – in Assam to flow down as the Brahmaputra up to the Bangladesh border.
'Central forces have been stationed in the Siang River belt to facilitate pre-feasibility surveys for the project. These forces are harassing innocent villagers, underscoring the government's dictatorial approach,' Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Bosiram Siram said in the State's capital, Itanagar, on Friday (August 8, 2025).
He urged State government representatives to visit the Siang belt for feedback from the villagers instead of speaking on behalf of the National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC). 'The voices of the people, who will become landless if this project is executed, must matter,' he said.
Anti-dam activists and members of the Siang Indigenous Farmers' Forum have been accusing the government of luring or forcing some villagers to sign agreements in support of the SUMP.
The National Hydropower Corporation has been assigned to conduct a pre-feasibility survey for the SUMP, estimated to cost ₹1.13 lakh crore, under heavy security cover. In December 2024, more than 350 environmentalists, journalists, scientists, and civil society organisations submitted a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to direct the government to withdraw security forces from the area.
However, Chief Minister Khandu defended the SUMP as a much-needed 'defensive measure' against the sudden release of water by China from the Medog project after its completion.
Mr Siram also urged the State government to scrap the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1978. Adherents of indigenous faiths in the State want the Act implemented to protect the culture, heritage, and belief systems of the tribal people.
'A law that creates division among the tribal people should not be implemented at any cost. There is no need for this law. Outsiders are trying to make us fight among ourselves based on religion. We should not let Arunachal Pradesh become another Manipur,' he said.

Robert Vadra shifted blame to deceased persons: ED charge sheet
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has claimed in its charge sheet filed last month that Robert Vadra tried to mislead investigators by shifting the blame for the land deal in Gurugram's Shikohpur on three deceased persons, saying they handled such deals, and feigning ignorance about real estate matters from that period. Robert Vadra was questioned by the agency on April 15 and 16 this year and his statements to ED are part of the charge sheet. (ANI) The businessman husband of Congress member of Parliament, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has refused to recognise the person who actually signed on the ₹7.5 crore land deal in 2008, according to the charge sheet, reviewed by HT. The financial crimes probe agency filed the charge sheet on July 17, naming Vadra, two other individuals and eight companies as accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, alleging that Vadra received proceeds of crime worth ₹58 crore in the Shikohpur deal. The agency also attached 43 immovable properties worth over ₹38 crore linked to him, including an apartment in the posh The Aralias in Gurugram. It is alleged that SLHPL (Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd), a company of Robert Vadra, purchased 3.53 acres of land in Shikohpur from Omkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd (OPPL) on February 12, 2008, for ₹7.50 crore. Four years later, in September 2012, the company sold this 3.53-acre land to realty major DLF for ₹58 crore. The land deal got into controversy in October 2012 after IAS officer Ashok Khemka, then posted as the director general of Land Consolidation and Land Records-cum-Inspector-General of Registration of Haryana, cancelled the mutation of this, categorising the transaction as violative of the state consolidation act and some related procedures. Haryana police filed a case in the matter on September 1, 2018. The son-in-law of former Congress president Sonia Gandhi was questioned by the agency on April 15 and 16 this year, and his statements to ED are part of the charge sheet. To most of the queries put up to him, Vadra has claimed that he 'acted on behest of the understanding and guidance of three people -- Late Rajesh Khurana, Late H L Pahwa and Late Mahesh Nagar -- in all real estate matters' and that he had 'no knowledge of real estate and technical details of real estate matters in the early years of 2008' as it was a new business for him. Asserting that Robert Vadra has been evasive in his replies, ED's charge sheet says 'the documentary evidence collected during the course of investigation clearly establishes that Vadra is trying to mislead the investigation as he has put the entire onus with regards to purchase of land, seeking licence for commercial property on three deceased persons: Pahwa, Khurana and Nagar. On the contrary, the documentary evidence clearly provides that none of these persons were involved in the said transaction but the authorised persons were Sunil Kumar and Dhirendra Dadwal, the signatories on behalf of Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd'. Vadra, according to his statement, part of the charge sheet, said he didn't know Sunil Kumar and Dhirendra Dadwal. The charge sheet against the businessman further states that Vadra created structures to launder the proceeds of crime generated from criminal activities. It said Vadra acquired the land in Shikohpur by undervaluing it and concealing the fact that the stamp duty was paid by the seller. HT reached out to Vadra for a comment, but there was no response until the time of going to press. He has previously termed the action against him as nothing more than a 'political witch hunt.'

Mumbai: To bolster the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's claims of vote theft in Karnataka and Maharashtra, Congress leader and former Maharashtra minister Yashomati Thakur has shared a nine-month old video of union minister Nitin Gadkari saying the names of around 350,000 voters from his parliamentary constituency, Nagpur – including his relatives and hardcore supporters – had been deleted from the voters' list during the Lok Sabha poll in June 2024. The fact that such allegations were levelled by two different people from two different parties, by those who held 'high positions politically and socially' proved that vote theft did take place, Thakur said. The three-term former MLA from the Teosa assembly seat in Amravati told Hindustan Times that the BJP resorted to vote theft whenever it did not want certain entities to win. 'They must have done the same thing with Gadkari ji,' she said. Thakur also said that on average, her constituency Teosa saw an increase of about 5,000 voters every year. 'But in 2019 and 2024, large numbers of voters were deleted from the list and the population of my constituency also reduced. Do you think that is possible,' she wondered. Thakur won the 2019 assembly poll but lost the 2024 election to the BJP's Rajesh Wankhade by 7,617 votes.

‘It needs reconstitution': Sharma quits as Cong's foreign dept head
Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Anand Sharma on Sunday resigned as the chairman of the party's foreign affairs department to help in its reconstitution and enable bringing in a younger leadership. After tendering his resignation, Sharma said the department was not being consulted on important issues related to foreign affairs. The former Union minister led the department for around a decade. 'As I have conveyed earlier, both to CP (Mallikarjun Kharge) and Chairperson CPP (Sonia Gandhi), in my considered view, the committee needs to be reconstituted to bring in younger leaders of potential and promise. That will ensure continuity in its functioning. Expressing my gratitude to the party leadership for having entrusted me with this responsibility, I am submitting my resignation as Chairman DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs) to facilitate its reconstitution,' Sharma said in his resignation letter to Congress president Kharge. Sharma, a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), has been the Congress's most prominent face on international affairs for almost four decades. He also played a pivotal role in the negotiations of the Indo-US nuclear deal. He was also instrumental in institutionalising the India-Africa partnership in a structured manner and convening the first India-Africa summit. Sharma had travelled to South Africa, Egypt, Qatar and Ethiopia as a member of the all-party delegations that went abroad to convey India's message of zero tolerance against terrorism following Operation Sindoor. Sharma had also articulated India's position to the world after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. He was a prominent member of the G-23 group of Congress leaders who wrote to then party president Sonia Gandhi in 2020 seeking organisational reforms in the party. In his letter, Sharma said the DFA has, over the last few decades, been actively engaged in building and strengthening the Congress's relations with like-minded political parties across the world, which share the values of democracy, equality and human rights. He said the Congress has built strong relations with major political parties in Asia, Africa, Middle East, Europe and Latin America. Speaking to The Indian Express Sunday evening, Sharma said he had conveyed it to the party high command that there was a need to reconstitute the department. 'Some people of the department have moved away, and some have other assignments. It is time for change and bring in the next generation of people. My services will remain available to share my experience in anchoring the new team,' said Sharma. 'The department is a very important one. When you take any decision concerning foreign affairs, there has to be consultation and what is to be spoken. Similarly, if there is a delegation going abroad, or if there is a debate in Parliament, there should be consultation with the department about the party line. For some time that has been missing. We have seen the BJP has been very aggressive,' said Sharma.
