South Africa's first Olympic swimming gold medallist Joan Harrison dies
Born on 29 November 1935 in East London, Harrison rose to international prominence as a teenage swimming prodigy, earning her place in history at just 16 years old.
At the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, Harrison won gold in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:14.3, making her the first South African swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal.
It would be another 44 years before another South African woman – Penny Heyns – would replicate that feat.
Harrison entered the Helsinki Games as an underdog.
'I did not put too much pressure on myself. I was not the favourite, the girl from Holland (Geertje Wielema) was,' Joan Harrison recalled in a recent interview.
'Team South Africa was made up of more than 80 people and I was the only female swimmer.'
She added that although the gold medal stirred public celebration, her life remained grounded.
'People made a fuss about it. But my life did not really change. I was still an ordinary girl from East London. When we arrived back in the city there were thousands of people waiting for me at the city hall.'
Joan Harrison's talent was evident early: at 13, she already held three South African junior and two senior national records, and had won national titles in the 220- and 500-yard freestyle events.
In 1950, at age 14, she competed in the British Empire Games in Auckland, New Zealand, where she won gold in the 440-yard freestyle, breaking the Games record by 13 seconds.
She was named the Outstanding Woman Swimmer of the Games.
She returned to the international stage at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, collecting two golds, one silver, and one bronze.
Despite retiring from international competition at just 17, Harrison returned in 1956 to win national titles in both the 100m backstroke and 300m individual medley.
In recognition of her achievements, Harrison was awarded the Helms Foundation Award in 1952 for the best athletic performance by an African athlete.
In 1982, Harrison was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an Honor Swimmer.
She joined a distinguished class that included swimming legends from around the globe.

Picture:Nassourdine Imavov The Russia-born Frenchman is a former UFC middleweight No 1 contender and almost looks a certainty to be next in line for Chimaev, having been knocking loudly on the title challenger door. Just like Du Plessis, Imavov is a big middleweight who likes to keep the fight standing, but also has some holes in his armour when it comes to wrestling. With a fight record of 16 wins and four losses, and riding a four-fight win streak, this boxer will make for a very entertaining fight with DDP. Nassourdine Imavov. A very dangerous fighter, the 32-year-old has a professional fight record of 17 wins and only one loss and is currently on a seven-fight win-streak in the UFC. Fighting out of the world famous Fighting Nerds gym in Brazil, eight of his fights have gone the distance – something that would not excite Du Plessis. He was also the back-up opponent for DDP's last fight against Chimaev.

Rankings: Horror scenario where Springboks could fall to SIXTH
The Rugby Championship could not have got off to worse start for the Springboks as they were shocked by the Wallabies in a 38-22 defeat that cost them the No 1 spot in the world rankings. As a result of the Springboks' horror 38-22 defeat to Australia, they lost a whopping three rankings points and plunged to third place, while the All Blacks' good win over Argentina saw them gain 0.45 rankings points to leapfrog to the summit There is still an expectation that the Springboks will bounce back against Australia in Cape Town this Saturday, but the fact remains: if they suffer another defeat by more than 15 points – a rankings nightmare would materialise. A heavy defeat to the Wallabies – a team still ranked sixth in the world – could see the Springboks lose a further 2.65 rankings points, and that would see them plummet to sixth spot below England. Such a fall from grace would be almost unthinkable, but so was the scoreline last weekend. If the Springboks were to suffer a defeat of less than 15 points, they would manage to hang onto third spot in the rankings, but they'd lose 1.77 ranking points and only just be marginally ahead of France and England.
