South Africa's first Olympic swimming gold medallist Joan Harrison dies

Joan Harrison, South Africa's first Olympic swimming gold medallist, has died at the age of 89.
Born on 29 November 1935 in East London, Harrison rose to international prominence as a teenage swimming prodigy, earning her place in history at just 16 years old.
At the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, Harrison won gold in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:14.3, making her the first South African swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal.
It would be another 44 years before another South African woman – Penny Heyns – would replicate that feat.
Harrison entered the Helsinki Games as an underdog.
'I did not put too much pressure on myself. I was not the favourite, the girl from Holland (Geertje Wielema) was,' Joan Harrison recalled in a recent interview.
'Team South Africa was made up of more than 80 people and I was the only female swimmer.'
She added that although the gold medal stirred public celebration, her life remained grounded.
'People made a fuss about it. But my life did not really change. I was still an ordinary girl from East London. When we arrived back in the city there were thousands of people waiting for me at the city hall.'
Joan Harrison's talent was evident early: at 13, she already held three South African junior and two senior national records, and had won national titles in the 220- and 500-yard freestyle events.
In 1950, at age 14, she competed in the British Empire Games in Auckland, New Zealand, where she won gold in the 440-yard freestyle, breaking the Games record by 13 seconds.
She was named the Outstanding Woman Swimmer of the Games.
She returned to the international stage at the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, collecting two golds, one silver, and one bronze.
Despite retiring from international competition at just 17, Harrison returned in 1956 to win national titles in both the 100m backstroke and 300m individual medley.
In recognition of her achievements, Harrison was awarded the Helms Foundation Award in 1952 for the best athletic performance by an African athlete.
In 1982, Harrison was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an Honor Swimmer.
She joined a distinguished class that included swimming legends from around the globe.
At the ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, she was honoured with a commemorative display and left her footprints in cement – a lasting tribute to a trailblazing career. Post your condolences below, by …

Dricus du Plessis' next UFC fight: Four potential opponents

The former UFC middleweight champion will first take time away from the sport to work on a few things. South Africa's former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis may have relinquished his title to Russia's Khamzat Chimaev, but according to his coach Morne Visser, DDP is far from done. The 31-year-old will now go back to the drawing board to address the flaws that led to him losing the belt. Wrestling seems to be the biggest issue for Du Plessis, as witnessed in his fight on Sunday. Currently, the middleweight division is heavily stacked with plenty of fighters standing in line to take on Chimaev for the belt. Here we take a look at four potential opponents who could be next in line for Du Plessis, as he plots his way back to challenging for the middleweight title. Reinier de Ridder The Dutchman is a former training partner of Du Plessis and stylistically this is the fight that makes the most sense as a comeback for the South African. The UFC's No 5 ranked middleweight is a former ONE middleweight and light heavyweight champion with a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and is undefeated in five fights since joining the UFC. With a professional record of 21 wins and only two losses, he has a world class ground game, but can also stand up and brawl if needs be. Reinier de Ridder. Picture: Waleed Zein/Anadolu via Getty Images Anthony Hernandez The No 6 ranked Hernandez – although being in the UFC for some time now – has thrown his hat into the middleweight title picture of late thanks to some devastating victories in the last year. With a professional fight record of 15 wins and 2 losses, the 31-year-old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt, faces De Ridder in October, with the winner possibly set to face Du Plessis for the No 1 contender's spot to fight for the title. Anthony Hernandez. Picture:Nassourdine Imavov The Russia-born Frenchman is a former UFC middleweight No 1 contender and almost looks a certainty to be next in line for Chimaev, having been knocking loudly on the title challenger door. Just like Du Plessis, Imavov is a big middleweight who likes to keep the fight standing, but also has some holes in his armour when it comes to wrestling. With a fight record of 16 wins and four losses, and riding a four-fight win streak, this boxer will make for a very entertaining fight with DDP. Nassourdine Imavov. Picture: Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC Caio Borralho This Brazilian is a true martial artist, boasting black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and is also a brown belt in Judo. A very dangerous fighter, the 32-year-old has a professional fight record of 17 wins and only one loss and is currently on a seven-fight win-streak in the UFC. Fighting out of the world famous Fighting Nerds gym in Brazil, eight of his fights have gone the distance – something that would not excite Du Plessis. He was also the back-up opponent for DDP's last fight against Chimaev.

'Chiefs are winning' : Tso Vilakazi praises Kaizer Chiefs after their impressive win against Richards Bay

The club confirmed the acquisitions of Etiosa Ighodaro, Asanele Velebayi, and Luke Baartman in front of their home fans at the stadium. Chiefs claimed a 1–0 victory over Richards Bay on Tuesday, courtesy of a Gaston Sirino strike in the 57th minute. But it wasn't just the result that grabbed headlines; the Soweto giants also announced three new signings after the win. Former Orlando Pirates midfield maestro Tso Vilakazi has heaped praise on Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs following their third consecutive win in the Betway Premiership at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday. Immediate impact off the bench from Gastón Sirino 😤 It's beautiful stuff from Amakhosi 🤩🎯 📺 Stream #BetwayPrem on DStv: Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel Speaking after the match on the iDiski TV podcast, Vilakazi praised Amakhosi for the bold move and acknowledged the club's growing momentum. "Kaizer Chiefs is a very big team in South Africa and Africa. They have created history today; it's the first team to announce players at the stadium after a win," Vilakazi said The Buccaneers' all-time leading goalscorer added that while Amakhosi's winning form is good for South African football, he remains slightly concerned about their ability to sustain it over the course of the season. "Chiefs are winning, there is nothing wrong with it, it's good for the team spirit and for everyone to come behind the team, especially because of what happened last season. When you see the team win, it gives you hope that everything will be okay," he added. "If they continue with what they are doing over the weekend, they will be surprises". IOL Sport

Rankings: Horror scenario where Springboks could fall to SIXTH

The Rugby Championship could not have got off to worse start for the Springboks as they were shocked by the Wallabies in a 38-22 defeat that cost them the No 1 spot in the world rankings. As a result of the Springboks' horror 38-22 defeat to Australia, they lost a whopping three rankings points and plunged to third place, while the All Blacks' good win over Argentina saw them gain 0.45 rankings points to leapfrog to the summit There is still an expectation that the Springboks will bounce back against Australia in Cape Town this Saturday, but the fact remains: if they suffer another defeat by more than 15 points – a rankings nightmare would materialise. A heavy defeat to the Wallabies – a team still ranked sixth in the world – could see the Springboks lose a further 2.65 rankings points, and that would see them plummet to sixth spot below England. Such a fall from grace would be almost unthinkable, but so was the scoreline last weekend. If the Springboks were to suffer a defeat of less than 15 points, they would manage to hang onto third spot in the rankings, but they'd lose 1.77 ranking points and only just be marginally ahead of France and England. That's the horror scenario, but by contrast, if the Springboks secure a big win over Australia by more than 15 points, they can jump back to second place ahead of Ireland. Those permutations are based on the likelihood of New Zealand claiming victory against Argentina on Saturday night. Even so, ultimately the only way the All Blacks could lose top spot is if they somehow lost by more than 15 points to the Pumas while the Springboks beat Australia. 1 (↑2) New Zealand 92.51 2 (↑3) Ireland 89.83 3 (↓1) South Africa 89.78 (-3.00) 4 France 87.82 5 England 87.64 6 Australia 85.08 (+3.00) 7 Argentina 81.60 8 Scotland 81.57 9 Fiji 80.50 10 Italy 77.77 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
