Maki opens up about experiencing harassment at an audition years ago
Maki has opened up about the sexual harassment he experienced at an audition when he was only 15 years old.
The OPM singer and songwriter guested on "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" Thursday where he shared some of the struggles and rejections he faced when he was starting out in the industry.
But there was one incident that significantly challenged him more than the rejections, he told Abunda.
"Dito po ako pinakana-challenge if I were to pursue this industry. Actually 'di po 'to alam masyado ng mga tao sa akin, I don't even know if my parents know this," he said.
According to Maki, he went to the audition because he wanted to surprise his parents.
"I was 15 and sobra po akong full of passion, full of dreams, and then I auditioned. I did everything, nag-acting, nag-singing, dancing, in front of one person kasi ni-lock niya 'yung pinto," he said.
In narrating the event, Maki artist had to pause and take deep breaths to continue. He did not drop any names.
Maki recalled that after the audition, the person started asking him questions that were not appropriate for children.
When asked by Abunda if he was sexually harassed, he initially said that he is not sure if he could call it such.
When asked again if he was "verbally, sexually harassed" and felt violated by what the person did, Maki answered in the affirmative.
"Opo, yes po," he said, confirming to Abunda that the person asked him sexual questions.
Per Maki, he did not know how to answer the person's questions, adding he also no longer remembers what he answered.
"Sabi po kasi niya is, 'kailangan alam namin 'tong mga bagay na 'to kasi dapat kilala ka namin as an artist,'" he recalled.
"So ako po, naniwala po ako, so kung anu-ano pong sinabi ko na mga bagay na-expose — feeling ko po, first time ko po kasi mahiyain po akong bata eh."
During that time, Maki told the person that he needed to go to the comfort room so he could leave the room.
"Di na po 'ko bumalik, tapos nag-jeep po ako pauwi, tapos umiiyak po ako sa jeep. Dun ko lang po na-realize na hindi ko po alam kung ano 'yung ginawa sa akin pero na-realize ko po that time, I was thinking about my dream. 'Yun lang po nasa isip ko, pumunta po ako ng kwarto na 'yun for my dream," he said.
Maki also said he went home in tears not because of what the person did to him, but because he thought the industry might be too harsh for him to handle and be able to pursue his dream.
"Maybe I'm not ready yet for this dream, so if my dream is too big, baka di ako big enough to achieve it."
He also clarified to Abunda that the person did not physically violate him, saying, "Hindi po, hindi ko rin po hahayaan."
Maki is known for the songs "Dilaw," "Saan?" "Kailan?" "Bughaw," "Kahel na Langit," and more.
He is set to release his album "Kolorcoaster" on September 19.

Manny Jacinto on 'tough' Hollywood journey: 'There's a lot of rejection'
Manny Jacinto may be capturing everyone's hearts now, but the Filipino-Canadian "Freakier Friday" star shared that his journey in Hollywood was paved with a lot of rejection. Manny guested on "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" Friday where he candidly talked about the challenges he encountered in the entertainment industry. "It's a pretty tough industry, you know, especially as a person of color, whether you're Asian or a Filipino in general. It can get pretty tough, but there's a lot of rejection in auditions, in casting choices, in projects. You just have to keep on going," he said. "I think I built a lot of work ethic from my parents because of their work ethic and I just, you know, continue to strive on." Manny's most recent role is Eric Davies in "Freakier Friday," a charming chef and single dad engaged to Anna, played by Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan. Before this, he also starred in "Star Wars: The Acolyte," "Top Gun: Maverick" alongside Tom Cruise, "Nine Perfect Strangers" with Nicole Kidman and Dolly De Leon, and "The Good Place," among others. But Manny admitted that he did not always want to be an actor, adding that his family were mainly in the education sector. "I was really the first one kinda in the arts, so I had a lot of weird looks from, you know, some titos and titas and my lolos and lolas, but they were always very supportive and they let me be free and explore dance and the arts," he said. Per Manny, he did not go into acting full-on until after he obtained his engineering degree. He started taking acting classes and auditioned for anything and everything, from plays to films and TV shows. As to where he gets his courage to keep going, he shared, "Well, my mom would always say, 'Ang tigas ng ulo naman ng batang 'to' and I think it's just the stubbornness. I think it's a part of that, but it's also, again, work ethic and also the support from my parents." During his interview, Manny also told Tito Boy that he would like to work with Lea Salonga if given the opportunity and that he has plans to do a film in the Philippines. "Yeah, I think the actual goal is I'm trying to write and create stories that could hopefully be filmed in the Philippines as well, both whether to act here or to create stories to act here," he said. Manny is currently in the country for the Philippine premiere of "Freakier Friday," which is now showing in cinemas.

Maki opens up on past rejections: ‘It took me years to achieve kung ano ako ngayon'
Before making a dent in the OPM industry, Maki experienced various setbacks in the past. On Thursday's episode of 'Fast Talk With Boy Abunda,' the 'Dilaw' singer opened up about the rejections he experienced when he was very young. "'It took me so much years to achieve kung ano na po ako ngayon,' Maki said, before sharing how he auditioned twice for a reality singing competition, and was rejected both times. Despite this, Maki continued to be determined, believing that 'when you do something or you take a risk, always know to yourself na as much you want to be accepted dapat ready kang ma-reject.' Maki also recalled the time when he released his debut song 'Halaga' in 2021, which didn't receive much attention. 'Noong ni-release po ito [Halaga] back in 2021 pandemic, wala pong pumansin ng kanta,' he shared. 'I was really disappointed in myself na akala ko ito na 'yung moment ko, naka-sign na ako, naka-release na ako ng sarili kong kanta tapos walang nakikinig," he added. But when Maki thought no one was listening to his song, his father was there—quietly supporting him all along. 'Naalala ko, pumunta ako ng kusina para uminom ng tubig. Tapos 'yung kwarto po kasi nila papa, malapit lang po doon sa kusina, tapos naririnig ko po 'yung kanta ko from their room. Naririnig ko po na si papa 'yung nag-i-i-stream, paulit-ulit, every morning, every night,' he tearfully shared. According to the singer, it was in that moment he realized he couldn't give up on his dreams. His parents were always there to support him. 'Kung mayroong isang naniniwala sa 'yo, hindi ka dapat tumigil lalo na kapag magulang mo 'yon,' he said. Maki also found out the lone listener of 'Halaga' in Spotify was his dad all along. 'Sa Spotify na makikita mo na may isang nakikinig, may dalawang nakikinig tapos 'yung kaisa-isahan don, 'yung papa ko. So sobra po akong happy,' he said. 'I really appreciate my parents.' Maki made waves for his song 'Dilaw,' which came out in 2024. It was the top song on Billboard Philippines' first Hot 100 chart. He previously performed at the Philippine Arena as Lany's surprise guest, and as a guest act for BINI's Grand BINIverse concert. More of his songs include 'Namumula,' 'Bughaw,' and 'Kahel na Langit.' He is set to release his debut album 'Kolorcoaster' on September 19. — Jade Veronique Yap/LA, GMA Integrated News
