Spanish coach Riveiro lays down the law for Ahly stars - Egyptian Football
Spanish coach Jose Riveiro has laid down the law to the stars of African giants Ahly of Egypt as they prepare for another CAF Champions League campaign. Cairo-based Ahly have won the elite African club competition a record 12 times -- seven times more than closest rivals Zamalek of Egypt and TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo. But last season they fell in the semi-finals to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, losing the tie on away goals after Yasser Ibrahim conceded an own goal in the final minute of regular time. Defeat was particularly painful for the Cairo Red Devils as it was the fourth time they had won back-to-back titles only to fail to create history by lifting the trophy three consecutive times. After three seasons and five trophies with Orlando Pirates in South Africa, Riveiro moved to Ahly last May and has yet to celebrate a victory. Ahly drew with Inter Miami and Porto, who they led four times, at the Club World Cup in the United States and lost to Brazilian outfit Palmeiras. If the 49-year-old Spaniard believed the Egypt Premier League kick-off last weekend would bring a chance of fortunes, he was mistaken. Away to Modern Future, who finished 14th last season, Ahly had to come from behind to secure a 2-2 draw thanks to a Yassin Marei goal. "There is no place for names, and no room for favouritism," said a visibly angry Riveiro after that match. "Whoever proves himself in training and in matches will get chances -- whoever disobeys instructions will have no role in the team." No future Queried by reporters about his line-up, Riveiro said: "I am the coach and I decide who participates and who does not". Riveiro stressed to his squad the need for full commitment to his tactics, warning those who failed to follow them would have no future at Ahly. He echoed the comments of the last two Ahly coaches, South African Pitso Mosimane and Swiss Marcel Koller, that Ahly want to win every competition they are involved in. But Riveiro knows winning the Champions League is of paramount importance for several reasons, including qualification for the 2029 Club World Cup. They have a first round bye in qualifying and will tackle the winners between Aigle Noir of Burundi and ASAS of Djibouti for a place in the group phase. The Club World Cup this year gave Ahly and the other three African representatives, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, Esperance of Tunisia and Wydad Casblanca of Morocco, unrivalled riches. Each club received $9.5 million for qualifying plus an additional $2 million for a win and $1 million for a draw. Sundowns did best, taking home $12.5 million. Wydad will not be involved in the coming Champions League as they finished third in the Moroccan league, leaving champions Renaissance Berkane and runners-up FAR Rabat to represent the kingdom. FAR and the other seven quarter-finalists last season, including eventual champions Pyramids of Egypt will be back, and the field includes 10 former champions and six winners of other CAF competitions. Pyramids will face Rwandan army outfit APR for the third straight season in qualifying and will be expected to complete a hat-trick of aggregate victories. Should the defending champions advance, they will face Insurance of Ethiopia or Mlandege of Zanzibar for a group place. Man City's Grealish Agrees to Join Everton on Loan
Rana Atef Everton have agreed a deal to sign Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City, with the England international set to undergo a medical today. The agreement includes an option to buy for around £50 million ($67.3m). The 29-year-old, whose contract at the Etihad runs until 2027, made just 16 starts in all competitions last season and was left out of City's final Premier League matchday squad, as well as their Club World Cup trip to the United States. Pep Guardiola has often preferred Phil Foden, Savinho, Jeremy Doku, Kevin De Bruyne, Omar Marmoush and Bernardo Silva in attacking roles. Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a British-record £100m fee, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and Club World Cup. He played a key role in the 2022-23 treble-winning season, starting every Champions League knockout match. If finalised, Grealish will become Everton's fifth signing of the summer, joining Thierno Barry, Mark Travers, Adam Aznou, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carlos Alcaraz, who made his loan move permanent. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani

Trump orders homeless out of DC, deploys federal agents and prepares National Guard
An FBI spokesperson in Washington said on Monday that its agents would be part of an enhanced federal law enforcement presence in the capital, after US President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric on crime and homelessness, calling for homeless people to leave the city immediately, Axios reported. The announcement came after US media published images of FBI agents patrolling parts of the District of Columbia on Sunday evening. Separately, two US officials told Reuters on Sunday that the US military is preparing to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops in Washington. On Sunday, Trump vowed to clear Washington of homeless people and jail criminals, despite the city's mayor, Muriel Bowser, asserting that there is currently no increase in crime rates. 'The homeless must leave immediately,' Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. 'We will provide you with places to stay, but far from the capital. As for the criminals, you don't have to leave; we will put you in jail where you should be.' Trump also posted images of tents and streets in the capital with some litter on them. The White House declined to clarify the legal basis Trump would use to remove homeless people from Washington. The Republican president only has direct control over federal land and buildings within the city. Trump threatens takeover Trump's statements that crime in the capital is 'completely out of control' have reinforced his renewed threats of a federal takeover of the city and his orders to bolster federal law enforcement. Although crime rates in Washington have recently decreased, arrests for non-violent crimes have risen under Trump's 'Safe and Beautiful DC' executive order, which established a task force aimed at eliminating crime and facilitating a 'stronger presence' of federal law enforcement, according to Axios. Trump has pledged to make the US capital 'safer and more beautiful' than ever before. 'We will provide the homeless with places to stay, but they will be far from the capital,' the president said, adding that 'criminals will be imprisoned, and everything will happen very quickly.' Last month, Trump signed an executive order that makes it easier for cities to clear homeless encampments and directs that people be placed in 'long-term' treatment facilities with the aim of 'restoring public order.' Human rights groups have criticised the order, saying it 'encourages the use of forced civil commitment,' a process of placing people with mental health issues in treatment facilities without their consent. White House defends action White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement on Sunday that Trump's actions had 'removed illegal weapons and drugs from the streets of Washington DC in just a few nights.' 'This does not take into account the many potential crimes that were deterred thanks to the heavy and visible presence of law enforcement officers,' she said. 'The Trump administration will continue to take necessary action to make Washington, DC, clean and safe.' When asked to comment on reports that 120 FBI agents would be involved, Jackson said, 'There is an increase in the number of federal law enforcement officers in Washington, DC in response to violent crime, which has included the FBI.' White House representatives did not immediately answer a subsequent question from Axios about the exact number of FBI agents involved, and the Bureau declined to comment on the matter. Federal control of the capital A full federal takeover of Washington would require Congress to revoke the city's home rule system, which allows residents to elect their own mayor and council members. Under the current arrangement, Congress retains oversight authority over the city's laws, and the president can temporarily assume command of the city's police force if he 'deems that special emergency conditions exist'. Even without removing home rule, Trump could exert pressure on the city by deploying the DC National Guard, which is under his command, or by temporarily taking control of the city's police. Appearing on MSNBC's 'The Weekend' on Sunday, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser emphasised that violent crime in the city had fallen for the second consecutive year. 'We are not seeing a spike in crime,' she said, adding that 'any comparison to a war-torn country is exaggerated and wrong.' The latest escalation began last week after a former Justice Department employee was reportedly injured in a carjacking attempt. The president then floated the idea of imposing federal control if the mayor 'did not manage the capital better' and ordered a seven-day operation to enhance federal law enforcement, focusing on high-traffic tourist areas and other hotspots, according to multiple media outlets. Trump's DC conference On Sunday, Trump announced he would hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday at the White House to unveil a 'comprehensive plan' to restore security, cleanliness, and renewal in Washington. He said the conference would address 'not only crime and murder' but also 'cleanliness and general physical renewal'. The two US officials who spoke to Reuters on Sunday said that while the National Guard troops are ready to move as soon as the order is given, a final decision awaits the president's approval. One official added that the troops' duties could include protecting federal agents or performing administrative tasks to free up law enforcement for field duties.
