Glover says players can skirt the driver test. USGA chief says that isn't the case

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover says players have found a way to beat the system by handing the USGA a backup driver if they get picked for random testing on the thinness of the clubface.
That didn't bother Mike Whan, the CEO of the USGA, who says it's not that easy.
'We keep serial numbers of the driver that were given us, and 90% of the drivers that were given us in those practice facilities when we test are played on the first tee,' Whan said Tuesday ahead of the U.S. Women's Open in Wisconsin. 'And we expect 10% of players to be making changes, anyway.
'I don't think that's a real concern for us.'
Glover got some attention on his SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio show when he said the test is not stringent enough because only about 30 drivers are randomly selected for testing. And he mentioned another loophole.
'I've been trying to think all morning and all day how to say this without sounding like it's going to sound, but most guys don't give them their real driver, anyway,' Glover said when asked why the USGA didn't just test drivers of every player. 'They give them their backup just in case.
'I know a lot of guys, they keep two drivers in their bag just in case,' he said. "'Hey, oh, yeah, it's this one. It's this one right here. Yeah, do this, test this one.''
The driver testing has been going on for years because after hundreds of swings, the face gets too thin for USGA standards without the players or manufacturers being aware.
Rory McIlroy's driver failed the test at the PGA Championship and he had to use a backup. Scottie Scheffler said his driver also was tested and didn't pass, though he knew it was getting close. He went on to win the PGA Championship.
Whan said test results are green (pass), yellow (getting close) and red (fail). They are kept confidential to prevent a routine matter from getting too much attention, as was the case at Quail Hollow.
'If they got a yellow, they start preparing for a backup driver or switch,' Whan said. 'It seemed like a big week to everybody else. But for us, it was a pretty standard week.' On the shelf
For the second time in three years, Will Zalatoris is missing the heart of the PGA Tour season because of back surgery.
Zalatoris, 28, posted a message on Instagram on Monday saying that instability and discomfort in his back this spring kept getting worse, and tests revealed another round of herniated discs. He had surgery on Friday and said he would be out until the fall.
'I'm happy to say I woke up feeling good and excited about my long-term health,' Zalatoris said. 'Time to focus on my recovery and get back after it.'
He hit his peak in 2022 when he lost in a playoff at the PGA Championship, missed a 15-foot putt that would have forced a playoff at the U.S. Open and won a playoff in the PGA Tour playoffs opener.
He withdrew the following week at the BMW Championship with back pain (and missed the Presidents Cup), and had his first surgery in 2023.
Zalatoris reached No. 7 in the world after 2022. He now is at No. 84. PGA Tour University
The PGA Tour is adding three players straight out of college from the PGA Tour University ranking, a program aimed at creating a quicker path from college to the pros.
A fourth player, Auburn sophomore Jackson Koivun, also earned a PGA Tour card through the accelerated program for underclassmen. Koivun told Golf Digest he would defer membership and return for his junior year at Auburn.
Koivun picked up his final point by finishing in the top 10 at the NCAA championship on Monday. He turned 20 last week, making him the youngest player to get a card through the PGA Tour University Accelerated program.
North Carolina senior David Ford finished atop the PGA Tour University ranking and will have PGA Tour membership the rest of the year.
Florida State junior Luke Clanton earned enough points through the accelerated program and will make his pro debut next week in the Canadian Open. Vanderbilt senior Gordon Sargent secured his PGA Tour card in October 2023 and stayed in school.
The biggest move Monday came from UCLA senior Pablo Ereno. He tied for sixth in the NCAA championship — the best finish by a Bruins player since Patrick Cantlay tied for fourth in 2012 — and moved from No. 12 to No. 10 in the ranking. That gives him Korn Ferry Tour membership the rest of the year, instead of a spot on PGA Tour Americas. Out of the mouths of babes
Incoming LPGA Commissioner Craig Kessler learned how different people have different expectations, all because of a conversation with his three young sons.
Kessler said he and wife Nicole sat down with their boys — ages 9, 7 and 5 — to explain that he had been offered the job as LPGA commissioner and he wanted their thoughts.
He said the oldest asked a dozen qualifying questions to make sure this was the right fit.
'Our 7-year-old said, 'But Dad, you're a boy and I'm a boy, so why don't you just do boy sports?'' Kessler said. 'Which by the way, provided the most incredible teaching moment and we shared with them, 'Look if all we did in life were things that looked like us, that sounded like us, we're sort of missing the plot and leaving so much richness in life on the table.''
Leave it to the 5-year-old to get right to the point.
Kessler had told the boys they would take them out of school on occasion so they could join their parents on tour. That included stops in Europe and Asia.
'Our 5-year-old looked at me and said, 'But Dad, do they sell chocolate milk in Asia?'
'It just goes to show you that different stakeholders have different concerns, and it's certainly no different in the Kessler family.' Divots

FedEx Cup standings 2025: PGA Tour rankings ahead of BMW Championships

The FedEx Cup playoffs head into the second leg at the BMW Championship in Owings Mills, Maryland, after a thrilling St. Jude Championship that caused some movement in the FedEx Cup standings. Justin Rose's victory at the St. Jude Championship was nothing short of stunning. Overcoming a three-shot deficit in the final stretch, he finished the round with a score of 3-under 67, earning his 12th PGA Tour victory and securing a spot on Team Europe for the Ryder Cup. Due to a family emergency that required his regular caddie, Ted Scott, to leave the St. Jude Championship early, Scottie Scheffler had to complete the final round with a substitute caddie. Despite the change, Scheffler finished tied for third, marking his 12th consecutive top-eight finish. Scheffler is currently leading the FedEx Standings after the St. Jude Championship. Here is how the standings look before the BMW Championship that begins on August 14. BMW Championship predictions: Picks, odds, sleepers for PGA Tour playoff event

It's the final event before the 2025 Tour Championship and the last chance for the PGA Tour's best golfers to earn a spot on this year's Ryder Cup team. The BMW Championship is once again the second event of the FedEx Cup playoffs, but the 2025 tournament returns to Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. Keegan Bradley, the United States team captain at the 2025 Ryder Cup, won last year's BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club outside Denver, Colorado by one stroke after starting the event as the final golfer to qualify. Only the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings after last week's FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis are included in the BMW Championship field when tournament play begins on Thursday, August 14. The top 30 golfers in FedEx Cup points after the conclusion of the final round on Sunday, August 17, advance to the Tour Championship in East Lake, Georgia, starting on August 21. Caves Valley previously hosted the BMW Championship in 2021, when Patrick Cantlay won the tournament by beating Bryson DeChambeau in a playoff. Rory McIlroy is expected to return to PGA Tour play after skipping the first week of the FedEx Cup playoffs in Memphis, but he is considered a distant second among the favorites behind world No. 1 and FedEx Cup points leader Scottie Scheffler, according to oddsmakers. Here's a breakdown of the latest odds, picks and predictions for the 2025 BMW Championship as the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup continues: When does the BMW Championship start? The 2025 BMW Championship is scheduled to start with first-round action on Thursday, August 14. The tournament runs through the final round on Sunday, August 17. BMW Championship odds: Favorites to win 2025 PGA Tour playoff event BetMGM odds for the BMW Championship (as of 3:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 12): BMW Championship 2025 predictions "Aberg has been up and down for most of the year, but he's been trending up as of late. He finished T-8 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T-23 at the Open Championship and T-9 last week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He now comes to a course that's long and requires accuracy now that there's thicker rough, which suits his game." "Cantlay currently ranks 10th in SG: Total, which serves as the greatest barometer of performance that we have. That number is better than Ben Griffin, Keegan Bradley, Jordan Spieth, Sam Burns, Andrew Novak, Maverick McNealy and Cameron Young – all players with whom he's vying for a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team – not to mention potential European counterparts in Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick and Aberg. While it feels a bit uncomfortable to be myth-busting for a player who should be near the top-five in the world and instead ranks a meager 22nd, it's still worth pointing out that this year hasn't been the great downfall that some would like to think." "Young won Wyndham and might have hit the ball better last week in Memphis. He's picking a good time to gain some traction." 2025 FEDEX CUP STANDINGS: PGA Tour rankings after first playoff event 2025 BMW Championship: Sleeper picks "Im had a solid week in Memphis, finishing T-17 despite shooting 1-over in the final round. That got him into the next round of the playoffs and he now gets to play a course where he came in third at 23-under in 2021. It won't be quite the birdie fest it was 4 years ago, but Im is positioned to keep his season rolling this week." "We've had exactly one PGA Tour event at Caves Valley and upon first blush, it appears among the most first-shot tracks we'll see on the schedule. ... Top-15 results at Memorial Park, Quail Hollow, Muirfield Village and Renaissance Club all suggest that (Pendrith) is at his best when banging it into orbit is a bigger advantage than at other venues." "Kurt Kitayama hasn't been getting the credit he deserves for how he's played of late. He has finished inside the top 15 in four of his last five starts, including a win at the 3M Open and a T9 finish at last week's FedEx St. Jude Championship. He enters this week ranking fourth in the field in true strokes-gained from tee to green over the past three months. Kitayama also ranks third on the PGA Tour in birdie or better percentage at 25.54%, which is going to prove pivotal in an event where we should expect plenty of low scores." BMW Championship 2025 prize money The total purse for the 2025 BMW Championship is $20 million. The tournament winner is slated to receive $3.6 million. How to watch 2025 BMW Championship: TV channel, live streaming, schedule The 2025 BMW Championship, the second event of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs, will be televised nationally on the Golf Channel and NBC. It can be live streamed via ESPN+, Peacock and Fubo, depending on the time. Here's the full broadcast schedule for all four rounds: All times Eastern Thursday, August 14 and Friday, August 15 Saturday, August 16 Sunday, August 17

College football preseason poll ranking errors include Tennessee, Oklahoma, Clemson

Media members voting in college football's AP Top 25 followed the lead of the US LBM Coaches Poll by anointing Texas as the preseason No. 1. You'll get no objection from me. The Longhorns possess the coach, the roster and the quarterback to pursue a national championship. After the No. 1 spot, though, the two polls featured several discrepancies. Oklahoma became subject to the biggest disagreement. The Sooners went unranked by the coaches, but landed No. 18 in the AP poll. Here's a look at the eight biggest discrepancies between the polls, with my ruling on which poll got it right: Clemson Coaches: No. 6 AP: No. 4 Who got it right?: AP Clemson finished with four losses last season, but never mind that fading object in the rearview mirror, because Dabo Swinney retained a talented roster that's now more experienced. He even added some polish with a few transfers. Clemson touts the nation's best defensive line, along with arguably the nation's top quarterback, Cade Klubnik. The Tigers aren't just contenders inside the ACC. They're national championship contenders. Florida Coaches: No. 17 AP: No. 15 Who got it right?: Coaches Both poll services overrated the Gators, but the coaches came closer to the mark. Florida ended last season playing well. DJ Lagway is one of the nation's most promising quarterbacks, but he rehabbed injuries throughout the offseason, and after an underwhelming transfer haul, I question whether Lagway enjoys enough support on either side of the ball to justify these rankings in the face of a daunting schedule. Texas A&M Coaches: No. 21 AP: No. 19 Who got it right?: Coaches Texas A&M being overrated is an August tradition. The Aggies were ranked in the preseason polls in each of the past six years. They finished the season ranked only twice during that span, and only once did they finish higher than their preseason ranking. That doesn't mean these Aggies will stink. They're equipped with a solid offensive line and a strong backfield. But, combine how they buckled at the end of last season with their history of failing to meet projections, and the AP awarded too much respect. Kansas State Coaches: No. 20 AP: No. 17 Who got it right?: AP Kansas State unraveled last November but still finished 9-4, and the Wildcats returned a bulk of their production, including quarterback Avery Johnson. That helps explain why the Wildcats are an oddsmaker front-runner to win the Big 12. Kansas State's run game and rushing defense each should rank near the top of its conference. The coaches underrated the Wildcats, and the media corrected that. Brigham Young Coaches: No. 23 AP: Unranked Who got it right?: AP The coaches' ranking is out of touch with the reality that the Cougars' planned starting quarterback, Jake Retzlaff, transferred to Tulane this summer, rather than face an honor code suspension at BYU. Given that late roster twist, a different Big 12 team, Baylor, would be a better choice in the rankings than BYU. The Bears went unranked in both polls. BYU's coaches poll ranking honors its 2024 performance rather than its 2025 reality. WHO PREVAILS?: A scavenger hunt to locate the next national champion Mississippi Coaches: No. 15 AP: No. 21 Who got it right?: Coaches Lane Kiffin plays transfer roulette as well as anyone, and he assembled another impressive haul to replace the significant loss of talent from last season's 10-win team. Whether you think the AP or coaches ranking is more appropriate depends on whether you're a believer in quarterback Austin Simmons, a first-year starter. I'm a believer, after watching Simmons thrive in a relief appearance against Georgia. He'll enjoy a sufficient supporting cast. Tennessee Coaches: No. 18 AP: No. 24 Who got it right?: AP Ideally, split the difference between these two rankings, but, forced to choose one, I'd say the AP rankings are closer to the mark after Tennessee endured significant losses from its playoff team, including the April departure of quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Coach Josh Heupel's track record indicates a high floor, but combine the Vols' meek transfer haul with the quarterback uncertainty, and the coaches' ranking seems too bullish. At least the schedule is accommodating, by SEC standards. Oklahoma Coaches: Unranked AP: No. 18 Who got it right?: AP Embattled coach Brent Venables used the offseason to seed a revival, after the 2024 season went bust. Sweeping roster changes include the additions of star quarterback John Mateer, a transfer from Washington State, and Jadyn Ott, a former All-America running back for California. The AP ranking might be a smidge lofty for a team facing Oklahoma's brutal schedule, but it's closer to the mark than the Sooners being omitted from the coaches poll, where they received the most points among unranked teams.
