MP's ‘paon paon wale Bhaiyya' on march to push Modi schemes
Bhopal: Union agriculture minister and former CM
Shivraj Singh Chouhan
will start a 'padhyatra'from his Vidisha constituency on Sunday to highlight the welfare schemes of the Narendra Modi govt.
Chouhan's march starts right after the state Congress launched its restructuring of the organisation from Vidisha district on May 20.
The state Congress is adding a new panchayat committee tier below the booths to its organisation.
The goal of the Union minister's padhyatra is to ensure that the benefits of central schemes reach eligible people and give a boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's targets of a self-reliant and Vikasit Bharat.
Chouhan, during his younger days as MP from Vidisha, often went on padhyatra in his constituency. Then he was known as 'paon paon wale Bhaiyya (brother who walked)'.
His first padhyatra in Vidisha was in 1991.
A statement from his office said that the Union Minister will be walking two to three days a week, covering an average of 20 to 25 km per day, and will move to every part of his Lok Sabha constituency. The march will cover one assembly constituency after another in Vidisha. The march will later be taken to other constituencies in the country.
"This padhyatra is an important initiative towards taking the resolution of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of a self-reliant and developed India and ensuring the benefits of the schemes of the Union govt reach the maximum number of people," the statement said.
"During the yatra, the Union Minister will halt overnight in the villages and communicate with people about welfare schemes as well as evaluate their impact. Through the yatra, he will bring the govt's commitment to rural development, women empowerment, agricultural reform, employment generation, and social welfare on the ground," the statement added.
The padhyatra will take the PM Awas Yojana, PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, welfare schemes for women, PM Rural Roads scheme, and other schemes related to health, education, digital India, and self-employment to the people.

India abstains on Gaza ceasefire resolution in UNGA, just six months after voting for a similar resolution India abstained from a UNGA resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza for the fourth time in three years. India had voted in favour of a UNGA resolution for ceasefire in December 2024, making this a significant departure from India's position just six months ago. According to a leaked demarch reported by U.S. media, the Trump administration has 'warned' partner countries not to join the conference or to make pledges for the recognition of Palestine. India recognised Palestine in 1988, and is among 147 of 193 UNGA countries that have already recognised the Palestinian state. The resolution entitled 'Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations'was introduced by Spain at the UNGA on Thursday evening. 149 of 180 countries voted for the resolution . The United States, Israel and ten other countries voted against the resolution. India was one of 19 abstentions on the vote. India was the only country in South Asia, BRICS or the SCO groupings to abstain. Explaining the vote, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Paravathaneni Harish said that India was 'deeply concerned' about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, but that it decided to abstain 'in continuation' of previous votes in December 2022 criticising Israel for Human Rights violations and in December 2024 that referred the Israeli bombardment of Gaza to the International Court of Justice. India had also abstained in a vote calling for a ceasefire in October 2023 and two other resolutions pertaining to human rights investigations in 2023-2024. Iran says Israel attack 'declaration of war', Trump asks Iran to take the deal After Israel launched an array of strikes against dozens of Iranian targets on Friday, Iran said that Israel's actions are a declaration of war. Israel hit nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories in Iran and targeted military commanders during the start of an operation to prevent Tehran from building a nuclear weapon. Israel launched an attack on Iran even as the US and Iran were preparing to hold a sixth round of talks on Sunday on Tehran's uranium enrichment programme. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that the strikes would 'continue as many days as it takes', while the military said intelligence showed Iran was approaching the 'point of no return' on its nuclear programme. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel it faced a 'bitter and painful' fate over the attacks, and President Masoud Pezeshkian said 'Iran will make the enemy regret its foolish act'. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the attack as a 'declaration of war'. Trump urged Iran to 'make a deal', warning that there will be more 'death and destruction' after Israel launched deadly strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. He had given Tehran a 60-day ultimatum, which expired on Thursday, to make a deal. He encouraged Tehran to take advantage of a 'second chance.'

Karnataka chief minister seeks Centre's help to bail out mango farmers
Bengaluru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah has urged Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to intervene and address the issues faced by mango farmers in Karnataka due to the sharp decline in market prices. In his letter to Chouhan, Siddaramaiah has requested immediate steps to implement a price deficiency payment scheme (PDPS) under market intervention scheme (MIS) for mangoes as an urgent policy response. He stated, "Necessary direction may be issued to designated central procurement agencies to initiate procurement operations immediately at an appropriate intervention price, ensuring that farmers receive at least the minimum cost of cultivation as a safety net." Siddaramaiah explained that the market price, which earlier was around Rs 12,000 a quintal, has now plummeted to as low as Rs 3,000. The cost of cultivating a quintal of mangoes is around Rs 5,466, leaving mango growers unable to recover even their basic input costs. "This has led to protests and growing agrarian anxiety. Unless prompt and effective intervention is undertaken, this crisis may lead to serious socio-economic consequences in the region," he stated.
