President Ramkalawan Presides Over Swearing-in of New Master of the Supreme Court
In the presence of family members and distinguished officials, His Lordship Asba took two solemn oaths: the Oath of Allegiance to the Constitution and the Judicial Oath.
During his address, President Ramkalawan congratulated Mr. Asba on his appointment and expressed great confidence in his ability to execute his duties with fairness and according to the rule of law. "It is a great honour and pride seeing another young Seychellois take on a professional position in our nation's judicial system," the President remarked. "The oath comes with responsibility. We are confident that with your experience and pure sense of justice, you will execute your duties with fairness."
Mr. Andy brings 18 years of distinguished experience in law enforcement, legal practice, and judicial administration to his new role. Currently serving as Chief Magistrate of the Seychelles Judiciary since 2023, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to justice throughout his career.
Speaking to the national media, His Lordship Asba expressed profound joy, honour, and privilege at his appointment as Master of the Supreme Court. He described the appointment as a reflection of years of hard work, integrity, and commitment to justice. "The oath is a renewal of my commitment to defend the Constitution and serve the country by providing the public with the standard of service they rightfully expect," he stated.
Present for the swearing-in ceremony was First Lady, Mrs. Linda Ramkalawan, Vice-President Ahmed Afif, Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Lubero: United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) supports military justice in trials for sexual violence
Mobile court hearings conducted by the Butembo Military Court began on Thursday, 26 June, in the town of Lubero, North Kivu. Ninety-two defendants, including 45 Congolese soldiers and 47 civilians, are facing charges of rape, sexual violence, child abduction, and extortion. The crimes were committed between 2021 and 2024. These hearings, expected to last around ten days, are being held with the technical, logistical and financial support of MONUSCO's Justice Support Section. The trials take place in a context of heightened militarization in this area of North Kivu, linked to Sukola I operations against armed sources report that the prolonged interaction between civilians and military personnel has contributed to a rise in sexual violence, particularly involving minors. Formally requested by the Butembo Military Court, MONUSCO is supporting the initiative to ensure justice for victims, combat impunity and bring the judiciary closer to mobile hearings aim to enable victims to participate in the legal process, reduce prolonged pretrial detention at the Butembo urban prison, and deter future perpetrators of similar crimes. This initiative is part of MONUSCO's strategic plan, which seeks to reduce violence, protect civilians and reinforce the rule of is providing technical and logistical support, including the transportation of trial participants, coordination of hearings and legal monitoring. The North Kivu Women's League welcomed the initiative. Its coordinator, Hélène Makule, called it a step forward, while urging for strict enforcement of court rulings. ' We want the perpetrators to be punished in accordance with the law. Too often, we are told they are in prison, but they remain at large, which puts human rights defenders at risk. ' she said. Norwegian Ambassador to the Republic of Seychelles Bids Farewell After a 3-Year Tenure
The Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Vivianne Fock Tave received the outgoing Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to the Republic of Seychelles, H.E. Mr Gunnar Andrea Holm at Maison Quéau de Quinssy on Tuesday 01st July 2025. Principal Secretary Fock Tave thanked Ambassador Holm for the work done during his tour of duty, noting that the bilateral cooperation between Seychelles and the Kingdom of Norway has strengthened, namely in the fields of capacity building, climate change and maritime security through EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA and the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). They touched on the issue of drug trafficking, whereby Norway is working alongside the UNODC on an information sharing mechanism with the Seychelles to help tackle this scourge. Plastic pollution was another issue addressed, with Norway being the co-chair of the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution. Climate change, tourism and current international and regional issues were among the other topics broached by PS Fock Tave and Ambassador Holm during his farewell call.
