Special Bannockburn rugby fundraiser aims to spread message of inclusivity
Bannockburn Rugby Club will host an extra special match on Sunday with the aim of spreading the message of inclusivity in sport and raising money for Stirling's Pride celebrations.
The match will take place between local side Bannockburn Valkyries and the Thebans from Edinburgh, with a day of live entertainment and vendors also in place to make it a day to remember for those in attendance.
The occasion came about after members of the rugby club helped with the setting up and take down of the inaugral Pride celebration in the city last year - with a desire to do more this time around.
Second-row player Hilary Ball - who has been with the Valkyries for around two-and-a-half years - has been one of those working hard in the background to make Sunday's match happen.
She told the Observer: 'We wanted to do something more this time around to put ourselves on the map as a welcoming community.
'We wanted to make our message of inclusivity loud and clear, as it's one of our core values that anyone in Stirling and the surrounding area who is looking for a way to get fit, or a way to make friends, should see us as a community who welcome anyone and everyone.
'Rugby is the perfect sport for that because it can welcome 'every body' as well as everybody.
'Alongside being a club player for our teams, we also offer 'social memberships' which give people the chance to just come along, enjoy the atmosphere and get fit along the way.
'We have teams for all ages, and also we're home to the Forth Valley Clan team which is focused on opening doors for all, of any ability especially ambulant disabilities.
'Our men's and women's teams are transgender inclusive so there's a seat and a place on the pitch for everyone.'
Stirling Pride will receive all money made from the event and since getting in touch with the charity, the team of volunteers at Bannockburn RFC have been working around their own jobs to pull things together.
But during moments where they thought it wouldn't be possible, a nasty message of division offered a stark reminder of the need for the weekend's match - and the importance of the core message behind it.
'A player for the Valkyries team, Anna Crisp, who was one of the first players to join the Valkyries when formed almost five years ago, has been a real catalyst for us getting organised and making this event happen', Hilary continued.
'She couldn't do it alone so the club pulled together a committee to make it a reality, squeezing whatever spare time we each had, to volunteer our time to make this happen.
'One of the players who is involved with the club received a really malicious and cruel homophobic attack related to her place in the women's team and I think that made us even more determined not to pull things and get this over the line.
'Everyone was making free time, calling in favours from businesses and people they knew to make it happen.'
The schedule gets underway at the club from 12pm, with the match ticking off at 2pm.
A banner will also be available to be decorated for the Pride celebrations and festivities will continue through the night, including a karaoke organised after the boots have been cleaned and the final whistle sounded.
Hilary added: 'The Thebans are a fantastic team who are in our own league and they are a club who exemplify the message of rugby being for everyone and anyone.
'We didn't just want this to be in our own bubble here at Bannockburn but to echo across the country, so this game gives us a chance to celebrate an important message, make money for a great cause - and do what we do best on the pitch.'

Stirling Highland Games set to open doors on traditional family fun event
The event, held at Stirling Sports Village, is a strong fixture in the local calendar - with visitors tomorrow able to expect traditional fun including the heavyweights competition, Highland dancing and track and field. Stirling Highland Games is set to welcome visitors and locals tomorrow (Saturday) for one of the biggest dates in the local events calendar. The Games, which feature a variety of traditional events including Heavyweights, highland dancing, and track and field competitions, will take place at Stirling Sports Village, drawing participants and spectators from across the globe. It also hosts over 50 of Scotland's producers, makers, arts and crafts in the Traders Village as well as several creative artists' performances. Former Scotland Women's rugby internationalist Lyndsay O'Donnell is this year's honorary chieftain of the Games. Organisers said the prestigious role recognises Stirling-born O'Donnell's 'remarkable contributions' to international rugby and her ongoing commitment to inspiring future generations. Lyndsay boasts an impressive international career, earning 20 Caps for the Scotland Women's National Team and representing her country in the fast-paced world of rugby sevens. Her dedication and commitment to the sport have not only elevated her status as a player but also as a role model for aspiring athletes, particularly women in rugby. O'Donnell's accolades also include playing in the 2021 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, where she featured in the pool match against the Black Ferns. A Games spokesperson said: 'The Stirling Highland Games is a tradition that celebrates Scottish culture and athletic talent, and the committee are thrilled to welcome Lyndsay as its honorary chieftain.' On being announced as chieftain earlier this year, Lyndsay said: 'I feel incredibly honoured to be asked to be this year's Stirling Highland Games Chieftain and I am excited to be part of what is sure to be an unforgettable day.' A Games spokesperson added: 'The Stirling Highland Games committee is privileged to have Lyndsay at the helm, believing her proactive approach will enhance the event's legacy and inspire greater participation from athletes.' Gates open at 10am on the day, with this year's chieftain addressing the crowds at noon to officially open the event. Stirling Highland Games President Matt McGrandles said: 'We are all delighted that Lyndsay agreed to be our 2025 Honorary Chieftain. 'Her hard work and graft on the field not only stood her in good stead as a player but also aligns well with the characteristics of what my committee does as we aim to deliver another successful event for Stirling. Stirling Albion stumble in Challenge Cup opener ahead of striker's Forfar return
The Binos fell to a disappointing 3-0 loss at home to Dundee United's B side in the first match of the revamped KDM Evolution Trophy 'league phase' - with a league trip to Station Park on the horizon. It was a humbling start for Stirling Albion in the revamped KDM Evolution Trophy league phase as they went down to a comfortable 3-0 defeat to Dundee United's B side. With a busy start to the league season underway - and ahead of a trip to Forfar tomorrow - Stirling boss Alan Maybury decided to shuffle the pack with six changes to his side from the weekend draw with Annan. Aidan Cannon, Callum Crane, Robbie McNab Ross Cunningham and Russell McLean were the only players to retain their spots, with skipper Ross McGeachie returning to the side alongside some Binos youngsters in Sam Featherstone and a debut for keeper Robert Duffy. The midweek fixture failed to capture the attentions of the Stirling fans, with a quiet atmosphere during a beautiful night for football. It was a strong start from the hosts, with Cannon testing the palms of Terrors keeper Ruairidh Adams - who has spent time on loan at Kelty Hearts and Edinburgh City in previous loan stints. Adams was back in action on 17 minutes when McLean was found inside the United area, but the keeper was up to the task with the save again. Stirling had started well in the contest, but the water break for the stifling temperatures disrupted that rhythm as the United youngsters gained the lead just before the half-hour mark. Harry Welsh's teasing ball into the box was rifled into the net by Emil Franczak from a tight angle. Cunningham flashed another long-range shot over the bar as Stirling tried to regain control of the contest, but Welsh delivered a sucker punch for the visitors five minutes from the break. The impressive Welsh was laid through one-on-one behind the Albion rearguard and slipped a cool finish past Duffy. There was one final chance for the Binos before the break as Kane Thomson's shot came thundering back off the bar in a frustrating opening half. Four changes were made at the break by Maybury as he sought to build minutes ahead of the match with the Loons on Saturday and one of those alterations, Adam Brown, had a pair of chances early in the half - with Adams on form to tip over the bar from the second opportunity. Jack Harkness almost created an opening for Stirling with his industry, driving past the United defence down the right, but his cross narrowly evaded any attacking players. A frustrating evening for the hosts was capped off as Dundee United's B side made it 3-0 with six minutes to play. Following an excellent stop from Duffy to deny a Cohen Leiper shot, Jamie Forrest dug out a cross for Jack Anderson to nod home from close range and ensure a pointless opening from the first of six games in the 'league phase' of the competition. Their next action in the event will come on August 26 when they host Hibernian B at Forthbank. Before then is the trip to Angus to take on Forfar, with both sides sharing the early lead of the division on four points after a win and a draw in their first two matches. New Binos striker Russell McLean will be aiming to make his mark back at Station Park after departing Forfar in the summer - with the teams sharing a 0-0 draw on a nerve-shredding final day for the Loons last season which ensured their place in the fourth tier.
