St. Thomas Aquinas' Sherice Newton is the Broward Flag Football Player of the Year
Sherice Newton knew a little bit about how to play quarterback in flag football even before her senior season.
But she hadn't formally been given the keys to St. Thomas Aquinas' offense until this season.
The Raiders valued Newton for her leadership qualities and felt she was the best choice to fill their vacancy at the position.
The decision paid off.
Newton turned into one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the state while leading St. Thomas Aquinas back to the regional finals in Class 3A.
And so, Newton, a senior who is headed to FIU to study biochemistry, is the Miami Herald's Broward County Flag Football Player of the Year.
Newton completed 369 of 469 pass attempts this season for 3,937 yards and threw 73 touchdown passes with only nine interceptions. She also showed off her quickness when she kept the ball, running for 336 yards on 45 carries.
But one of her biggest improvements was her decision-making and patience as a passer.
'I used to just roll out and throw it, but this year I learned to stay in the pocket more and I played much better than I had in the past,' Newton said.
The Raiders graduated all of their quarterbacks after the 2024 season and Newton was one of two possible options to take the reins this season. An injury made Aquinas' decision simple and Newton took it and ran with it, leading the Raiders to one of their best seasons in school history.
'I feel like being a senior they felt like I could be a leader to the younger players,' Newton said. 'I had good timing and I just got the ball to my receivers.'
Aquinas finished 16-2 before losing to Homestead in the playoffs.
Newton feels like it's a matter of time before the Raiders bring home a state championship.
'They just have to stay together and when times get tough not blame each other, just stay together and push through as a team,' Newton said.

Ahead of becoming Canberra's most-capped NRL player, Josh Papalii has been heralded as the key to a long-awaited title for his beloved Raiders. But it's the "off-field stuff" the boy from Logan will look back on most fondly. "The club's been so loyal to me. If you sort of think about what I've been through off-field, I probably should have been sacked 12 years ago, so the club's been such a loyal base for myself and my family," said Papalii, who has admitted this season will be his last for the Raiders. "I hope I've repaid that with love and sacrifice and in the way I've gone about my craft." Despite the inexperienced roster, Stuart has his squad firing on all cylinders, and there is a sense among the Raiders faithful - with GIO Stadium set for another sold-out crowd - that this season could be a special one. It would be a fairytale ending at the club for Papalii after missing out on a title in an agonising grand-final loss to the Roosters in 2019. "You see all these really great players that never really get to lift it, but the Raiders have got a really good opportunity this year," Soliola said. "If they keep going the way they're going they're definitely going to give themselves a shot at the business end. I think everyone in rugby league would want that to happen for someone like Paps." The Raiders would also dearly love to send off Jamal Fogarty on a high note. A part of club folklore even before he joined - Papalii's 2020 Dally M tackle of the year-winning ankle tap on the then-Titans halfback was immortalised on commemorative Budgy Smugglers - Fogarty has become a fan favourite since, but is bound for Manly next season. The playmaker has been one of the league's outstanding halves this season and is a welcome boost to the Raiders' starting line-up after a one-week lay-off with a groin injury. Fellow Queenslander Corey Horsburgh will also hit a milestone on Sunday, playing his 100th NRL game. It's the last audition for "Big Red'' ahead of selection for State of Origin II, with the hulking prop's red-hot form making him a favourite for inclusion in Billy Slater's Maroons squad.

Both players had strong rookie seasons, as Daniels led the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game and won the 2025 NFL Rookie of the Year Award. While that is certainly shaping up to be the case, reporter Levi Edwards added that Jeanty has been utilized in a unique role during the team's OTAs. Advertisement "It seems Kelly is placing Jeanty all over the field, giving him more opportunities to get the ball in open space in last week's practices," Edwards wrote. "This included screen passes and getting the ball to the running back out in the flat." Las Vegas added veteran Raheem Mostert during free agency, who led the NFL in rushing touchdowns during the 2023 season. But it seems that the new brass is investing heavily in their No. 6 overall pick instead of using a committee approach. Jeanty was a slot receiver for a season in high school, and he showed off his pass-catching prowess during his second season at Boise State. During that year, he caught 43 passes for 569 yards and five touchdowns. Any way that Kelly and the Las Vegas staff can get the ball into Jeanty's hands is sure to help the Raiders' offense. With a solid passing attack led by Geno Smith, Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers, Jeanty's running ability should keep defenses honest.
