Joyous celebrations at Banu Mushtaq's home in Hassan; elated husband watched award ceremony online
Mushtaq Mohiyudin was wide awake with his fingers crossed in Hassan on Tuesday (May 20) night, when the International Booker Prize ceremony was underway in London. Finally, when the name of his writer-wife Banu Mushtaq was announced as the winner, he was ecstatic beyond words.
'All our family members were in touch online throughout the night,' Mr. Mohiyudin told The Hindu over the phone.
A Hassan-based businessman, Mr. Mohiyudin also had plans to accompany Ms. Banu for the award ceremony. However, due to a delay in applying for visa, he could not travel. She has been accompanied by her three daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. Her husband and son Taher could not travel. Both celebrated the occasion by sharing a sweet at their home in Hassan on Wednesday (May 21).
'It is an unforgettable day. We all celebrated the occasion. I went to bed only at 4 a.m. after talking to all relatives and friends. We are all happy for her,' he said.
During her recent interviews, Ms. Banu has spoken about the support she received from her husband in her career as a writer, advocate, journalist and activist. He stood by her during the most difficult times, particularly when she faced the wrath of fundamentalists on the issue of Muslim women seeking entry into mosques.
On her flight to London, Ms. Banu lost her suitcase. The writer posted on her social media account that besides essential medicines, she had lost her silk sari and other dresses she had packed particularly for the award ceremony. Her husband, Mr. Mohiyudin, said that while the luggage had been traced, it was yet to reach the author.
'Our daughters, who accompanied her on the trip, managed to get her a new sari and made some last-minute arrangements in London,' he added.
Banu Mushtaq will be returning to India on May 26.

Florida High schooler's backflip fail during graduation ceremony goes viral after he accidentally kicks classmate: Watch
A South Florida high schooler does a backflip and hits the girl standing behind him while accepting his diploma. The incident reportedly happened over the weekend at South Plantation High School's graduation ceremony, per an Instagram-based news handle, its_onsite. The grad accidentally hitting the girl, caught on video, quickly made its way around social media. Notably, the video shows that as graduates lined up to receive their diplomas, one did a backflip on stage. But things didn't go exactly as planned. Mid-flip, his foot connected with the girl standing behind him, knocking her off balance. ALSO READ| 'He did apologize but he did warn her before the name was called he was going to do a flip. Excitement happened too quickly ... they had to sit next to each other after this,' wrote TikTok user @rebel_chaos, who shared the clip. its_onsite's post added, 'A South Plantation High School grad was feeling himself a little too much and accidentally kicked the girl behind him while doing a backflip during the ceremony.' 'According to #Rebel_Chaos, he did warn her he was gonna flip, but the excitement got the best of him. They still had to sit next to each other afterward.' Famed X-based journalist, Collin Rugg, also posted the video on X, captioning, 'High schooler does a backflip and accidentally kicks the girl behind him while accepting his diploma. Lmao.' Hilariously, the Florida grad's blunder reminded me of a viral 2018 video of a college student's Spring Break backflipping stunt also going sideways. The viral clip from Fort Lauderdale Beach showed Joe Manuel, a student from Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan, was showing off his backflip skills in front of a group of girls. After a series of successful flips, he crashed into a group of girls, knocking one to the ground. The young, annoyed woman jumps up and kicks and slaps Joe on the back a few times.

Some celebrities become famous not just for their work in the cinema, but also for their lives. This actress from the '90s became famous for her movies in both Bollywood and South Indian films. While her career was successful, her love life was full of ups and downs. She was linked to several married men over the years, with her relationships often making headlines. We are talking about actress Nagma Arvind Morarji, who was seen in big movies like King Uncle, Kunwara, Baaghi, Ek Jind Ek Jaan, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyo, Suhaag an d Lal Baadshah . After making a mark in Bollywood with some hit films, Nagma shifted her focus to South Indian cinema, where she quickly became one of the most famous leading actresses. Nagma was also involved with married actor Sharath Kumar, with rumours of their affair circulating widely. Later, while working in the Bhojpuri film industry, her name was reportedly also linked to Ravi Kishan. The two were seen together on several occasions and also worked in several films. However, they never publicly confirmed their relationship. Later, the actress was allegedly linked to Manoj Tiwari. While rumours of a romance between the two surfaced, they never confirmed or commented on the relationship. Despite all the media attention and heartbreaks, she never got married. In 2008, after a flourishing film career, Nagma made a bold move into politics, retiring from acting to focus on her new political journey. In a 2006 interview, she made a direct link between her family history and her political activism: 'My mom is Muslim and my dad is Hindu. We were brought up to respect all religions. She said, 'I personally experienced the Love of Jesus Christ from early on and His uniqueness and identifies herself as a Christian. Communal riots pained me. I wanted to do something. So I joined politics.'
