Iranian President Pezeshkian in Pakistan to strengthen bilateral ties
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and other high-ranking government officials warmly received the Iranian President at Noor Khan Air Base. A 21-gun salute was also presented to the visiting dignitary.
President Pezeshkian is accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, senior ministers, and other high-ranking officials.
Speaking before departure from Tehran, Pezeshkian said Iran and Pakistan have always maintained 'good, sincere, and deep relations" and plan to increase bilateral trade volume to USD 10 billion annually, Iran's state-run Press TV reported.
'Through Pakistan, we can connect to the Silk Road between China and Pakistan, and this road can connect to Europe through Iran," he said.
In Islamabad, Dar, who is also the foreign minister, met his Iranian counterpart Araghchi and the two leaders discussed various issues, state-run PTV said.
'The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Iran ties, with a focus on expanding cooperation in regional stability, trade, and economic collaboration. They also discussed enhancing bilateral engagement across key areas of mutual interest," the Foreign Office (FO) said in a post on X.
Main meetings of the Iranian president are scheduled for Sunday.
President Pezeshkian will meet with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Sharif.
Earlier in the morning, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Federal Housing Minister Raiz Hussain Pirzada received Pezeshkian on arrival in Lahore, the Foreign Office said.
During his brief stay in Lahore, he had a meeting with Nawaz Sharif.
President Pezeshkian also visited the mausoleum of poet Allama Iqbal, who is still popular in Iran due to his Persian poetry.
This marks Pezeshkian's first official visit to Pakistan as President of Iran.
'The visit is expected to further strengthen the brotherly relations between Pakistan and Iran," the FO added.

Handful of groups investing in India; low consumption growth a concern: Parth Jindal
Synopsis Parth Jindal of JSW Group highlights that only a few companies are currently investing in India. He emphasizes the need for broader participation in private capital expenditure. JSW Group plans to invest USD 50 billion in the next five years, showcasing its confidence in India's growth potential. PTI JSW Paints MD Parth Jindal Only a "handful" of corporates are investing in India, JSW Group scion Parth Jindal said on Monday, stressing the need for "democratisation" when it comes to private capital expenditure. The Mumbai-headquartered group having interest in cement, steel, ports and sports, believes in India's growth potential and will invest USD 50 billion over the next five years, the 35-year-old Parth, the son of Sajjan Jindal, told reporters here. "You have today a handful of groups investing in India. We need it to be more democratised. We need more MSMEs to invest. We need everyone to invest," Jindal, the managing director of the USD 49 billion group's cement and paints arms, told reporters here. It can be noted that some other industry captains, including billionaire banker Uday Kotak, have expressed concerns around investments getting done by a few groupings in the past. The JSW Group is investing across its businesses, Jindal said, pointing out that while his father Sajjan Jindal -- the group chairman and managing director -- has announced investing USD 60 billion over five years, group executives are pegging it at USD 40 billion and he himself feels it will be USD 50 billion. "We believe that there's incredible potential in India, incredible potential to export from India as well. And also really... in the China plus one strategy," the Jindal family scion said. Other private companies have opted deleverage or paying off their loans over investment in capacity addition, which is more sought after for the growth impetus it gives, Jindal said. Private companies have strong balance sheets, but they are not investing, he rued, adding that the government is also "perplexed" about this phenomenon because the fundamentals of the economy are very strong. Stating that manufacturing in India needs to go up, Jindal pointed to challenges around land acquisition and labour laws being a deterrent to invest. "(there are) so many laws, so many rules... tribal land, SC (Scheduled Caste) land, ST (Scheduled Tribe) land, OBC (Other Backward Classes) land. I mean, it's very difficult for any foreign company to come and understand or even a startup to come and think about it. So, that needs reform," Jindal said. The government has done a lot of reform, and its arms like the Niti Aayog are looking into how this can be reversed. Jindal also flagged concerns around the sagging consumption growth in the country, pointing out that it is a "tale of two Indias" where the top 20 crore people in the country are spending. "...it's a tale of almost two Indias. Now, you have a widening gap between the top 200 million Indians and the rest. And that's a really big concern because you're seeing value growth, but you're not seeing volume growth. And that could only mean that, you know, that this divide is increasing," he said. Jindal said JSW Group looks at manufacturing as its core strength, where it can put up a big plant right from acquiring a piece of land to erecting the facility. The group will list either the e-commerce arm JSW One or JSW MG Motors over the next two years, he said.

Currency watch: Rupee drops 48 paise to 87.66 against dollar; FII outflows, tariff worries drag
AI image The rupee plunged 48 paise to close at 87.66 against the US dollar on Monday, weighed down by persistent foreign fund outflows, global trade concerns, and rising dollar demand from oil importers. The Indian currency opened at 87.21 and touched an intraday low of 87.73 at the interbank foreign exchange market before settling 48 paise lower from its previous close of 87.18. On Friday, the rupee had staged a sharp rebound of 47 paise, PTI reported. Forex traders attributed the pressure to renewed fears over a wider trade disruption after US President Donald Trump's tariff measures resurfaced. Demand from oil marketing companies also added to the rupee's weakness. 'We expect the rupee to remain weak amid uncertainty over the India-US trade deal and foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows,' said Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst, commodities and currencies, Mirae Asset Sharekhan. 'However, weakness in the US dollar amid chatter over rate cut expectations in the US due to weak economic data may support the rupee at lower levels,' he added. Choudhary expects the USD-INR pair to trade in a range of 87.40 to 88. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bogota: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo Traders are now eyeing factory order data from the US and the Reserve Bank of India's upcoming monetary policy. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), chaired by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, began its three-day meeting on Monday. The outcome of the rate decision will be announced on Wednesday. Brent crude futures fell 1.06% to $68.93 per barrel as OPEC+ confirmed a production hike from September, while softening demand expectations in the US and tariff risks also weighed. The US dollar index, which measures the greenback's strength against six major currencies, was down 0.37% at 98.77. Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst at HDFC Securities, said the rupee's fall was also driven by foreign fund withdrawals and liquidity adjustments linked to a maturing $5 billion forex swap conducted by the RBI. "The forward premium rates also jumped to reflect the potential interest rate differential between the US and India after Friday's jobs data," he noted. US non-farm payroll data showed the economy added just 74,000 jobs in July, well below expectations of 106,000. The June figure was sharply revised to 14,000 from the earlier estimate of 147,000 — increasing pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. Despite the currency weakness, Indian equities ended higher. The BSE Sensex gained 418.81 points to close at 81,018.72, while the Nifty climbed 157.40 points to 24,722.75. FIIs remained net sellers, pulling out Rs 2,566.51 crore from domestic equities on Monday, as per exchange data.
