Government ready to clear doubts regarding revised timing in high schools: V. Sivankutty
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mr. Sivankutty said the current objections against the time revision were suspicious given that similar revisions in the past were not met with protests or disputes.
There is a misconception that the revision applies to all classes from Classes I to Class X. On the contrary, the increase of 15 minutes each in the morning and afternoon sessions (9.45 a.m. to 4.15 p.m.) applies only to high schools.
Organisations such as the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama had expressed concerns that the revised schedule would affect madrassa education.
Mr. Sivankutty said on Sunday that the sections now criticising the time revision raised no objection when the higher secondary schools timings were revised from 9.30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. during the United Democratic Front rule in 2014.
The State government had constituted a five-member expert panel in January 2025 to study issues related to the academic calendar.
In publishing the academic calendar, the State government only sought to ensure academic standards in school education and to guarantee the required 220 working days and 1,100 instructional hours, excluding examination days, as required by the Kerala Education Rules, Mr. Sivankutty said.
To compare, Gujarat has 243 days, Uttar Pradesh 233, Karnataka 244 days, Andhra Pradesh 233 days and Delhi 220 days.

Kerala's General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has proposed a public discussion on whether the government should adjust the academic year-end vacation schedule for schools, considering the concerning loss of class time due to climate change-induced weather fluctuations, particularly intensified monsoons and the accompanying risk of floods and rain havoc. Mr. Sivankutty told a press conference on Thursday (July 31, 2025) that education experts had repeatedly flagged the worrying loss of study days caused during the school reopening phase in June, when the monsoon besets Kerala. Mr. Sivankutty said he had raised the prospect of switching the April-May summer vacation to June-July monsoon holidays at public meetings in some schools and asked students and teachers to raise their hands to indicate support. 'Quite a few did, while others applauded,' he added. Easier said than done However, Mr. Sivankutty said, the switch was easier said than done. It required amending the Kerala Education Rules (KER) and negotiating with teachers' organisations and Parents and Teachers Associations (PTAs). 'The government does not want to rock the boat. It did not want an unnecessary furore and protest. The administration will only take a call on the proposal, if at all, by striking a consensus with all stakeholders, including political parties, local bodies and revenue authorities,' Mr. Sivankutty. 'Often, the inclement weather and risk of widespread flooding constrain revenue authorities from commandeering school buildings for opening relief camps in June-July. Parents stay up late to find out whether the District Collector will declare a holiday for schools on days of heavy rain. Moreover, they find it challenging to drop children off at school and pick them up later. Furthermore, children risk catching rain-related ailments', Mr. Sivankutty said. He averred that some summers seemed bearable for children. 'If there is any spike in temperature, the authorities can take a call on a case-by-case basis,' he added. Braille textbooks Mr. Sivankutty announced the reintroduction of Braille textbooks for visually challenged higher secondary students. He said that currently, Braille textbooks were available only for children up to Class 10. He said Braille textbooks for higher secondary students had not been in circulation since 2015. 'We will distribute them immediately,' he added. Physical disability reservation Mr. Sivankutty said the issue of providing reservations for persons with disabilities in educational institutions remained mired in ambiguous government orders and court directives. Hence, the State would publish a handbook codifying the court directives and government orders concerning the subject. Mr. Sivankutty also flagged complaints about the delay in disbursing salaries to the temporary teachers in government and government-aided schools in Malappuram. 'The government will immediately rectify the anomaly,' he said.

Kerala General Education Minister and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State committee member V. Sivankutty on Thursday (July 31, 2025) demanded that the authorities prosecute former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Kerala State president K. Surendran on charges of seeking to undermine the dignity of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) communities in the country, and by extension, violating the Constitution and questioning the principle of reservation enshrined in it. Mr. Sivankutty took strong exception to Mr. Surendran's alleged imputation that the ruling front and Opposition MPs and MLAs elected from reserved constituencies in Kerala were SC/ST members 'only in name.' Mr. Surendran tagged his controversial social media post with the photographs of Congress Working Committee (CWC) member and MP from Mavelikara, a reserved constituency, Kodikunnil Suresh and CPI(M) leader P.K. Biju, who represented Alathur, a reserved Lok Sabha constituency, for two consecutive terms till 2019. Mr. Sivankutty said the BJP leadership should compel Mr. Surendran to withdraw the 'derogatory' statement, which the Minister said 'reflected the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) Hindutva worldview.' Mr. Sivankutty also termed Mr. Surendran's post a manifestation of the RSS' ambition to relegate Christians, Muslims, both minorities, and SC/ST communities as subaltern citizens in a Hindu majoritarian State that adheres to an oppressive caste hierarchy. Union Ministers Suresh Gopi, George Kurian come under fire from LDF for remaining silent on arrest of Kerala nuns in Chhattisgarh
Union Minister Suresh Gopi has drawn flak from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala for allegedly maintaining silence on the arrests of two Keralite nuns on 'questionable charges' of forced conversion and human trafficking in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Chattisgarh on July 25. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday (July 30, 2025), Kerala General Education Minister V. Sivankutty said Mr. Gopi, while contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Thrissur constituency in 2024, continually toured churches and even offered a golden circlet to Mother Mary as a token of piety and devotion. Mr. Sivankutty said Mr. Gopi's 'speechlessness' on the issue was surprising, given the latter's demonstrative affinity for Christians and their faith. He said Union Minister of State for Fisheries George Kurian also appeared 'least concerned' that the Chhattisgarh police had arrested Sisters Vandana Francis and Preeta Mary of the order of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI) on 'fake charges' of forced conversion and human trafficking at the behest of local Bajrang Dal workers. (Mr. Kurian had stated on Monday that his constitutional office constrained him from coming on a case that was still sub judice. BJP State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar later endorsed Mr. Kurian's position.' 'The BJP's governments in north Indian States are singularly responsible for allowing extreme Hindu right-wing groups free rein to hound, harass and persecute minorities, primarily Christians. Now, nuns are their target. Soon, the Sangh Parivar will catch priests and Church-run institutions in the cross hairs,' he added. Earlier, the Minister called on the president of the Catholic Bishops Conference in Kerala, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, who is currently the Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church, at the latter's official residence at Pattom in Thiruvananthapuram. After the meeting, Cardinal Cleemis told reporters that the nuns should get justice. 'The outcome of the case will be the sole yardstick of any future friendship or camaraderie. The sisters are still in prison. All should practise what they preach and show sincerity in friendship. The sisters should get justice,' he added.
