Istaf to decide on service rule change for sepaktakraw this weekend
Istaf secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Kader confirmed that the official notice was sent to all members on July 11. The proposed amendment aims to reduce confusion and disputes during matches, where services are often cancelled due to the non-kicking foot leaving the service circle.
'This proposal aims to end the confusion and tension that often arise during matches when a tekong's service is cancelled simply because their non-kicking foot fails to stay grounded, lifts off, or slips out of the circle,' said Abdul Halim. He added that inaccurate tosses by teammates sometimes contribute to these faults, unfairly penalising the tekong.
Currently, Clause 11.1.4 of the Istaf Sepaktakraw Rules disqualifies a service if the non-kicking foot moves outside the circle. The new proposal would redefine the circle as a reference zone rather than a strict boundary, giving players more flexibility.
The meeting will also review the Video Review System, introduced during a referees' workshop in Hatyai on July 21. Acting Istaf president Boonchai Lorphiphat emphasised the need for visual evidence in decisions involving service faults, net contact, and out-of-bounds calls. - Bernama

THE International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) has set up a special technical committee to review the proposed amendment to allow the tekong (server) to lift his non-kicking foot when executing the service. 'All findings by this committee will be referred to the ISTAF Referee Committee before being submitted to the executive committee for endorsement and final approval of any amendments to be enforced,' he said in a statement today. Under Clause 11.1.4 of the ISTAF Sepaktakraw Rules, a service is disqualified if the non-kicking foot steps outside the circle. The proposed amendment aims to redefine the circle as a reference zone instead of a rigid boundary, allowing players greater flexibility. Meanwhile, Abdul Halim has given a firm assurance that ISTAF will never abolish the centre court circle, measuring 13.4 metres (m) by 6.1m, which has been part of the game's identity since the 1965 Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia to host 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup in KL
MALAYSIA has secured the hosting rights for the 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup, announced by Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan. The decision was made during the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) council meeting in Hatyai, Thailand. 'ISTAF decided to give Malaysia the right to host the 2026 World Cup based on its record of holding international championships and in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026,' Mohd Sumali said in a statement. This will be Malaysia's third time hosting the event, following previous editions in 2011 and 2024. In addition to the hosting announcement, Mohd Sumali reiterated PSM's opposition to ISTAF's proposed rule change regarding the tekong's service circle. 'It will cause the uniqueness and artistry of the tekong position to disappear, which is saddening. My view, representing Malaysia, (is) that we should retain existing rules to preserve the art of the tekong's service,' he added. The PSM president also expressed dissatisfaction with the packed schedule of the ongoing 2025 Thai King's Cup, calling it unreasonable and detrimental to player performance. - Bernama
