Istaf forms panel to review sepaktakraw service rule change
THE International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) has set up a special technical committee to review the proposed amendment to allow the tekong (server) to lift his non-kicking foot when executing the service. ISTAF secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Kader said the decision was made at the ISTAF Council meeting in Hatyai, Songkhla, yesterday, following various suggestions and feedback received from member countries in connection with Clause 11.1.4 of the ISTAF Sepaktakraw Rules. This committee will be chaired by Taufiq Halim (ISTAF deputy secretary-general) and Prof Chalerm Chaiwatcharaporn (ISTAF treasurer). 'The decision to set up this committee was made after considering the insightful views from Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan and ISTAF assistant secretary-general from India Yogender Singh Dahiya. 'All findings by this committee will be referred to the ISTAF Referee Committee before being submitted to the executive committee for endorsement and final approval of any amendments to be enforced,' he said in a statement today. Under Clause 11.1.4 of the ISTAF Sepaktakraw Rules, a service is disqualified if the non-kicking foot steps outside the circle. The proposed amendment aims to redefine the circle as a reference zone instead of a rigid boundary, allowing players greater flexibility. Meanwhile, Abdul Halim has given a firm assurance that ISTAF will never abolish the centre court circle, measuring 13.4 metres (m) by 6.1m, which has been part of the game's identity since the 1965 Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games in Kuala Lumpur. In another development, he also hinted that 16 countries are set to be invited to compete in the 2026 ISTAF World Cup (men's and women's categories), which is slated to be held at the Axiata Arena here next May - BERNAMA

Istaf to decide on service rule change for sepaktakraw this weekend
The International Sepaktakraw Federation (Istaf) is expected to make a crucial decision this weekend regarding a proposed rule change that would allow the tekong (server) to lift their non-kicking foot during service. The matter will be discussed during Istaf's Council and Executive Committee meeting in Thailand, held alongside the 38th King's Cup Sepaktakraw World Championship. Istaf secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Kader confirmed that the official notice was sent to all members on July 11. The proposed amendment aims to reduce confusion and disputes during matches, where services are often cancelled due to the non-kicking foot leaving the service circle. 'This proposal aims to end the confusion and tension that often arise during matches when a tekong's service is cancelled simply because their non-kicking foot fails to stay grounded, lifts off, or slips out of the circle,' said Abdul Halim. He added that inaccurate tosses by teammates sometimes contribute to these faults, unfairly penalising the tekong. Currently, Clause 11.1.4 of the Istaf Sepaktakraw Rules disqualifies a service if the non-kicking foot moves outside the circle. The new proposal would redefine the circle as a reference zone rather than a strict boundary, giving players more flexibility. The meeting will also review the Video Review System, introduced during a referees' workshop in Hatyai on July 21. Acting Istaf president Boonchai Lorphiphat emphasised the need for visual evidence in decisions involving service faults, net contact, and out-of-bounds calls. - Bernama

Malaysia recommended as host for 2026 Sepaktakraw World Cup
MALAYSIA has been proposed as the host for the 2026 ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup (Men and Women) by the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF), skipping the traditional bidding process. ISTAF secretary-general Datuk Abdul Halim Kader stated that the recommendation was based on the Malaysian Sepaktakraw Association's (PSM) proven expertise in managing high-profile international events. The suggestion was initially put forward by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh during the ASTAF Asian Sepaktakraw Cup in May and has since gained solid backing from the federation. 'PSM has shown its capability by successfully hosting the ISTAF Sepaktakraw World Cup Kuala Lumpur 2024 and the ASTAF Asian Sepaktakraw Cup 2025, supported by 70 technical officials from 16 countries,' he said in a statement today. The announcement came after Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan was re-elected as PSM president for the 2025–2028 term during the association's Annual General Meeting at the World Trade Centre here yesterday. Abdul Halim congratulated Mohd Sumali on his reappointment, praising his role in revitalising sepaktakraw in Malaysia and internationally. 'The continuity in leadership signifies stability, unity, and a clear direction for the future of sepaktakraw in Malaysia and beyond,' he added. He also highlighted the significance of grassroots development under the National Sepaktakraw Development Programme (NSTDP), which engages over 500 young athletes from 25 institutions nationwide.
