Subaru's New EV Will Be Named After a Video Game
Uncharted
video game series published by Sony. Either way, the compact SUV's debut is exactly one week away, and a teaser photo suggests it could share a platform with a Toyota EV.
The Japanese carmaker released a single image of the Uncharted, far from the camera and shrouded in dust. But the rear end's proportions look suspiciously similar to another new EV from Japan: The
Toyota C-HR
. Though the image isn't very revealing, the dual-mini spoilers sprouting from the roof and the main spoiler on top of the trunk lid seem to match up perfectly. And while the taillight bar is shaped differently, the light pattern itself looks similar.

Subaru has yet to confirm any of this, of course. But the tie-up makes sense. Subaru and Toyota already work together to produce the
bZ4X
and the
Solterra
, two electric crossovers that share a platform and much of their design. A rumor from October 2024 said the two brands were teaming up once again to build another electric crossover. And judging by the shape of the Uncharted, it looks like that rumor is true.
If the two cars share a platform, the Uncharted will likely use the C-HR's 74.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack and dual electric motors, rated in the Toyota at 338 horsepower, with an estimated range of 290 miles. We suspect Subaru will have its way with styling, as it did with the Solterra, which could have a small effect on final range numbers.
The Uncharted will be the third EV in Subaru's lineup, following the Solterra and the
Trailseeker
. Whether it's related to the C-HR or not, it should make the compact electric crossover segment even more interesting.
With a global debut scheduled for July 17 and 7:30 PM ET, we won't have to wait long to see it fully revealed.

2026 Subaru Uncharted EV Debuts With FWD And 300-Plus Miles Of Range
2026 Subaru Uncharted EV Subaru Subaru, a brand synonymous with all-wheel drive and adventure, just launched its newest all-electric vehicle with a surprising new option. Available with front-wheel drive, the 2026 Subaru Uncharted EV is the automaker's first FWD car since 1996. Most importantly, the Uncharted Premium FWD model gets more than 300 miles of range on a full charge. That's a key metric many customers are looking for, and Subaru is answering the call. At the debut in New York City, Subaru of America director of communications Dominick Infante clarified why the manufacturer decided to switch it up for the Uncharted. "Someone suggested that we were walking away from the EV market, and that's simply not true," Infante said at the event, Road & Track reported. "We understand that to be successful, we must adapt to current market demands while continuing the push toward hybridization and electrification of our product lineup. That's just smart business." As the automotive industry adjusts to whipsawing tariffs and disappearing incentives for EV consumers, Subaru is betting this is a viable answer for the coming years. 2026 Subaru Uncharted EV Subaru A mechanical twin to Toyota's new all-electric CH-R, the Uncharted is offered in three flavors: Premium FWD, Sport, and GT. The Premium FWD version is targeted to buyers looking for value. Subaru says it will start at a lower price point; however, it will only be available in limited numbers. At base level, the Uncharted Premium FWD offers 221 horsepower and an estimated range topping 300 miles. Stepping up the ladder, both the Sport and GT trims are equipped with all-wheel drive, a big boost to 338 horsepower, and up to 290 miles of range. Compared to rival all-electric models like the Hyundai Kona EV and Kia Niro EV, the Subaru comes out on top. Plus, the Uncharted comes with Subaru's X-Mode, a feature that improves traction and control in low-speed, low-traction situations like icy roads. 2026 Subaru Uncharted EV interior Subaru Right in the center of the dashboard, a 14-inch touchscreen is standard in all Uncharted models. All the best standard cabin amenities come in pairs, like twin side-by-side wireless smartphone chargers in the front center console, and two USB-C chargers to keep rear seat passengers happy. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard. Passengers up front will enjoy standard heated seats across all trims, and a heated steering wheel is optional. Choose the GT model to get all the goodies, including ventilated front seats, a panoramic moonroof with a power shade, a Harman Kardon premium audio system, and 20-inch wheels. Fast charging is available at more than 15,000 Tesla Supercharger stations across the country, and the battery can be refilled from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. That's true even in cold winter months thanks to the installation of an onboard battery preconditioning system. Owners can also charge up the Uncharted at home on a Level 1 box. Subaru prides itself on its EyeSight driver-assistance suite, and it didn't skimp on the technology in the Uncharted either. Pre-collision braking, front cross traffic alert, blind spot monitors, lane departure alert, emergency stop assist, advanced adaptive cruise control are standard, and a panoramic view monitor, traffic jam assist, and lane change assist are available on upper trim levels. Pricing for the 2026 Subaru Uncharted has not yet been announced. It will be available for sale starting early next year. The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander's New Powertrain Makes the Car Interesting Again
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Mitsubishi is often treated a little dismissively by my industry colleagues, yet the Japanese brand is still planning to expand its U.S.-market lineup every year through 2030. I think more people should be paying attention to Mitsubishi's low-cost offerings. Especially now that it's about to have the cheapest, and possibly most fuel-efficient, three-row SUV on the market. The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander's all-new mild hybrid powertrain, a first for Mitsubishi, is the brand's big news for the next model year. I've never driven anything with that car's outgoing 2.5-liter four-cylinder MIVEC engine, but as it only posted 181 horsepower, I doubt I was missing much. (OK, maybe some of my friends' dismissal of Mitsubishi has been justified.) The SUV will now run a 1.5-liter 16-valve four-cylinder turbo looped in with a mild hybrid system. Detailed specs, including power, price, and fuel economy, are TBA. But Mitsubishi promises that 'the new powertrain will deliver increased confidence and drivability thanks to electrified torque aiding off-the-line acceleration,' in a press release. It's already a decent-looking vehicle, and very low-priced in its class. A 2025 Outlander S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) starts at $31,795 with a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty. If the new car gets better with getting too much more expensive, don't sleep on it. This really is a dang decent-looking machine. Mitsubishi The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (a different model; the plug-in hybrid, which starts at $40,445 with all-wheel drive) is getting a bigger battery to increase all-electric range. Its dampers, springs, stabilizer bars, and bushings have also been adjusted to improve ride quality and steering feel. The PHEV is also getting some new feature enhancements that the regular Outlander got for 2025. That includes better sound insulation, heated and cooled front seats, some redesigned interior elements (cupholders, storage, and more), a Yamaha-branded stereo, and an optional larger screen. The Outlander PHEV is still the flagship, but is syncing up with the regular Outlander's visual updates for next year. Mitsubishi Mitsubishi The Eclipse Cross is getting some decorative tweaks too; Outlander Sport is a carry-over for '26. Mitsubishi is also introducing Trail Editions of the Outlander and Outlander Sport for next year, with [sic] 'model-specific graphic and trim packages, dedicated wheels, dealer-available off-highway-focused tires and accessory kits and Thule roof-racks and mounts.' Sounds pretty low-effort to me, though a trim package could mean pretty much anything. Maybe the graphics kit will end up being cool—Mitsubishi has been known to offer loud decal sets on its cars for some reason. The Mirage is going out of production, but when you could still order one, you could spec these Ralliart graphics. Mitsubishi Jokes aside, a new mild hybrid Outlander is very interesting to me. PHEVs are great, but only if the majority of your driving is in a relatively close-to-home orbit. A mild hybrid is better for longer trips and adventures. On paper, the Outlander is a pretty incredible value if you don't mind the low horsepower figure—a brand-new all-wheel drive seven-seat SUV for about $35,000? That's pretty rare in 2025! The current Outlander AWD claims 27 mpg in combined driving (24 city, 31 highway). Assuming the new turbo electric hybrid setup will improve on that and cure some of the vehicle's anemia, that's going to be a compelling product even without true low-range or hardcore off-road capability.
