Poilievre wants Carney to cash out blind trust, says ethics screens insufficient

OTTAWA — The Conservatives want Prime Minister Mark Carney to sell all the assets in his blind trust to avoid any possible conflicts of interest.
Carney set up a blind trust after he was sworn in as prime minister in March and the details of how it works were made public on Friday.
They show that the prime minister has set up screens to avoid potential conflicts related to his previous interests in Brookfield Asset Management, Brookfield Corporation and Stripe Inc.
But Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says that's not enough, arguing Carney could still benefit personally from decisions that affect Brookfield's wide portfolio of businesses.
Poilievre is calling on Carney to cash out his holdings and give them to a trustee to invest without any knowledge of what he held previously.
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office says Carney worked with the ethics commissioner to 'exceed' the existing rules by creating the blind trust days before he took office.

ExxonMobil's Bold Bet on the Permian Basin: Massive Growth Ahead?

Exxon Mobil Corporation XOM continues to break records in the Permian – the most prolific shale play in the United States. Along with the second-quarter 2025 earnings, the largest integrated player announced that it produced around 1.6 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (MMBoE/D), marking its highest output ever from this area, highlighting the fact that Permian has already become central to its growth story. XOM is using innovative technologies to achieve this. To keep underground cracks open, which continuously allow more oil and natural gas to flow out of wells, the large integrated energy company has been employing a special material called lightweight proppant. Thus, XOM has been successful in boosting recovery rates to 20% from 15% just a few months ago. This is how the energy giant has become successful in pulling out more oil from the same wells. The integrated energy player is thus showcasing a solid production outlook for the years to come. In the most prolific basin, ExxonMobil projects a ramping up of production to 2.3 MMBoE/D by 2030, suggesting a jump from the current 1.6 MMBoE/D. CVX & FANG's Solid Permian Footprint Like XOM, Chevron CVX and Diamondback Energy, Inc. FANG also produce significant volumes of oil and natural gas from the Permian. Chevron has a strong footprint in the Permian. With more than 2 million net acres of land, CVX has been operating in the basin for more than 100 years. Diamondback Energy is a pure-play Permian operator. FANG has a huge inventory of oil and gas wells, thereby showcasing a solid production outlook. XOM's Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates Shares of XOM have declined 4.7% over the past year against the 4% rise of the industry. From a valuation standpoint, XOM trades at a trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) of 6.93X. This is above the broader industry average of 4.31X. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for XOM's 2025 earnings has been revised upward over the past seven days. ExxonMobil currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). P.E.I. renews funding agreement to create more diversity in trades, technology jobs

The Government of Prince Edward Island announced it has renewed a two-year funding agreement with Women's Network PEI. The program, Trade HERizons, helps diversify the workforce in the trades and technology fields across the Island, a news release from the province said. 'This program plays an essential part in strengthening the Island's workforce by supporting individuals who are eager to contribute,' said Minister of Workforce, Advanced Learning and Population and the Minister responsible for the Status of Women Jenn Redmond. 'By continuing to invest in this initiative, individuals are empowered to take charge of their future and make lasting contributions to the trades and technology sectors in PEI.' The program, offered by the Women's Network, provides career exploration and college preparation designed for women and gender-diverse individuals. The program introduces participants to opportunities in trade and technology, building their skills, fostering personal growth and guiding career development. 'We are thrilled to have the support of the province to continue to offer Trade HERizons, a college prep and career exploration program for women identifying and gender non-binary Islanders interested in exploring the trades in PEI,' said executive director of Women's Network PEI Jillian Kilfoil. 'The trades offer meaningful work opportunities and Trade HERizons creates a supportive place for people who have historically been underrepresented in those fields. We look forward to welcoming and hosting a new cohort of future tradespeople this fall.' Applications are now open for the next cohort which begins in the fall. More information on the program and how to apply is available on the Trade HERizons' website. For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
