Malaysia calls for urgent reforms of UN Peacekeeping operations
BERLIN, GERMANY: Malaysia has called for reforms in United Nations (UN) Peacekeeping operations to make them more effective and better ensure personnel safety against increasingly complex global challenges.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that peacekeepers today face emerging challenges, adding that the dynamic geopolitical landscape underscores the importance of continued evolution in UN Peacekeeping.
He said that two key shifts are essential to advancing meaningful reform.
"Firstly, equipping our peacekeepers with technologically advanced equipment and weaponry is paramount. The strategic integration of cutting-edge technology into peacekeeping operations serves as a powerful deterrent against hostile entities.
"This integration will significantly enhance our forces' capability to respond swiftly and effectively to emerging threats in peacekeeping missions. A technologically empowered peacekeeping force not only projects strength and moral authority but also reinforces the collective resolve to uphold peace and security," he said.
Mohamed Khaled said this during his intervention for High-Level Session II - Peacekeeping Reform: More Effective and Safer Peacekeeping during the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial 2025 forum, held here on Wednesday (May 14).
He added that the UN must emphasise capacity-building because, as a longstanding troop-contributing country, Malaysia strongly believes in the critical importance of training, particularly in areas that enhance interoperability, facilitate knowledge-sharing, and improve peacekeepers' overall safety and effectiveness.
"As missions grow more complex, it is imperative that we invest in training programmes that not only develop core operational competencies but also prepare personnel to integrate and utilise advanced technologies effectively.
"At the same time, we must ensure that our institutional frameworks and policies evolve together with these technological developments. This includes revising operational doctrines, updating standard operating procedures, and establishing clear guidelines for the ethical and responsible use of emerging technologies," he said.
Mohamed Khaled emphasised that peacekeeping reform lies at the intersection of technology, training, and policy.
"By equipping our peacekeepers with modern tools, investing in comprehensive capacity-building, and ensuring our institutional frameworks remain agile and responsive, we can build a force that is not only operationally ready and effective but also guided by strong values and a deep sense of responsibility," he said.
The biannual forum brings together the country's top leaders and officials who support the security mission under the UN. Mohamed Khaled took the opportunity to voice his views and renew the country's commitment to supporting the global security effort. - Bernama

TUNIS: Hundreds of people, mainly Tunisians, launched on Monday a land convoy bound for Gaza, seeking to 'break the siege' on the Palestinian territory, activists said. JS Harusame Makes Port Call In Kuantan, Reflects Growing Japan-Malaysia Defence Ties
KUANTAN, June 9 (Bernama) -- The Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF), JS Harusame made a port call here as part of its deployment for counter-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden. Commanded by Commander Makoto Ozawa, the vessel departed from Sasebo on June 1 with approximately 200 personnel onboard, including JMSDF sailors and members of the Japan Coast Guard. 'During this port call, we plan to engage in various exchange activities with the Royal Malaysian Navy,' said Ozawa in a statement today. This marks the fourth visit by JMSDF vessels to Malaysia this year, following their participation in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA). It is also the first visit to Kuantan by a JMSDF vessel since 2019. According to Ozawa, the government of Japan is actively promoting a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" to uphold an international order based on the rule of law. Ozawa said in this context, port visits and bilateral exercises with regional partners like Malaysia are seen as vital to furthering this vision and added that in 2024, the two nations launched their first bilateral exercise, MALPAN, and have already conducted two exercises. Additionally, Japan established the Official Security Assistance (OSA) framework in 2023, selecting Malaysia as one of the first four recipient countries. 'Japan will provide security equipment to Malaysia soon. Furthermore, there has been active exchange through study abroad, study visits, and seminars,' he added.

No plans to contest in any by-election after leaving Umno: Tengku Zafrul

In a statement posted on his social media today, Tengku Zafrul stressed that the possibility of running in a by-election was never part of his decision-making process when he chose to leave Umno. 'I strongly disagree with triggering by-elections without urgent necessity, as they consume both time and public funds,' he said. 'I acknowledge it was not an easy decision, but I carefully considered all views and opinions before arriving at it.
