PM Modi holds ‘fruitful' talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a 'fruitful' phone conversation with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, reviewing the state of the India–Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership and exploring ways to deepen cooperation in trade, connectivity, health, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. The call, initiated by the Uzbek side, comes just three days before a high-profile summit in Alaska where US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss potential solutions to the Ukraine war. According to the Prime Minister's Office, the two leaders assessed progress in ongoing projects and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral trade routes, boosting healthcare partnerships, enhancing technology transfers, and promoting cultural and academic exchanges. 'Had a fruitful conversation with President of Uzbekistan, Mr. Shavkat Mirziyoyev. We reviewed the progress achieved in key areas of our bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed our shared resolve to further advance the India–Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership.' M Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter). President Mirziyoyev extended warm Independence Day greetings to M Modi and the people of India, describing India as a key partner in Central Asia's development and stability. PM Modi, in turn, emphasised the 'age-old ties' linking the two nations and agreed to maintain regular contact on regional and global matters of mutual interest. India–Uzbekistan trade has grown steadily in recent years, driven by complementary economic strengths and a shared interest in diversifying markets. Bilateral trade is centred on pharmaceuticals, machinery, textiles, agricultural products, and IT services, with India exporting medicines, engineering goods, and consumer products, while importing raw materials, minerals, and cotton from Uzbekistan. Connectivity initiatives, such as the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and proposed direct air cargo links, aim to overcome the challenge of the two countries' lack of a shared border. Both sides have also explored cooperation in renewable energy, agro-processing, and tourism, signalling an ambition to push bilateral trade volumes beyond the current modest levels and position Uzbekistan as a key gateway for Indian goods into Central Asia. Uzbekistan occupies a strategic position, connecting South Asia to the heart of Central Asia, and shares historical, economic, and security linkages with both Russia and the West. Uzbekistan's geographic location gives it considerable geopolitical leverage. As a double landlocked country bordering Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, it serves as a key transit hub linking the resource-rich heart of Central Asia to markets in South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Uzbekistan's position along emerging transport corridors, including those connected to China's Belt and Road Initiative and various regional rail and road networks, makes it an important player in shaping trade and energy flows across Eurasia.

Phone Conversation with PM Modi 'important', Russia redeploying troops : Ukrainian President

New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described his telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday as ''important'' and said they had discussed in great detail the possibilities for influencing Russia's position in the war. ''An important conversation took place with the Prime Minister of India. Prime Minister Modi and I discussed in great detail the possibilities for influencing Russia's position. I remember how the Prime Minister of India has said more than once that our time is not a time for war. And real steps are needed to make this a reality–peace is needed,'' President Zelenskyy said in a statement. Prime Minister Modi and the Ukrainian President had a telephonic talk yesterday in which they discussed the situation in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump are meeting in Alaska on August 15 to discuss peace in Ukraine. President Zelenskyy said everyone is united by an understanding of clear facts. First–Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. Second–issues concerning the war against Ukraine must be resolved only with Ukraine's participation. Third–Russia must take the necessary steps to end this war. ''So far, Russia has not taken a single step,'' he said. He said Ukraine continues to engage with the United States at all levels. The Office team, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and everyone needed for effective work–all are involved. Meanwhile, Russia has said Moscow and Washington will be working ''vigorously and hard'' on the practical and political parameters of the August 15 Alaska summit for peace in Ukraine and expect the process not to be simple. However, both countries will be engaged in it actively and consistently. Russian President Vladimir Putin's Aide Yury Ushakov said both Russia and the United States are close neighbours and share borders. ''So it does make sense if our delegation simply crosses the Bering Strait and if such an important and expected meeting between the two leaders ta0kes place specifically in Alaska.'' He said it is in Alaska and in the Arctic that the economic interests of both countries converge and prospects for implementing large-scale mutually beneficial projects arise. However, the Presidents will undoubtedly focus on discussing ways to reach a sustainable settlement to the Ukraine crisis. He said Russia would expect the next meeting between the Presidents to be held on Russia's territory and an invitation to that effect had already been made to the President of the United States. President Zelenskyy said Ukrainian intelligence and military command had reported on what President Putin is counting on and what he is actually preparing for, including military preparations. ''He is definitely not preparing for a ceasefire or an end to the war,'' the Ukrainian President said. He said President Putin is determined only to present a meeting with America as his personal victory and then continue acting exactly as before, applying the same pressure on Ukraine as before. So far, there is no indication whatsoever that the Russians have received signals to prepare for a post-war situation. On the contrary, they are redeploying their troops and forces in ways that suggest preparations for new offensive operations. If someone is preparing for peace, this is not what he does, President Zelenskyy said. ''We continue to keep our partners informed about the real situation on the battlefield, in diplomacy, and in Russia's planning of further actions,'' he said. UNI RB 1510

Independence Day 2025: Is it 78th or 79th year of freedom? Know the answer

Independence Day 2025: After a long and hard-fought battle, India finally gained freedom from British colonial rule on August 15, 1947. The day is celebrated with great pride honouring the unity of citizens and freedom warriors who banded together to retake the nation from the British. The celebrations at Delhi's Red Fort — marked by the prime minister hoisting the tricolour, delivering a stirring address, and a ceremonial 21-gun salute — remain the centrepiece of the occasion. Across the country, people pay homage to the heroes of the freedom movement with cultural programmes, parades, and patriotic events. Is India celebrating the 78th or 79th Independence Day? Whether the day can be counted from August 15, 1947, the day India earned independence, or from the day it celebrated its first anniversary a year later, is the main topic of contention. If we start on the day of independence, India will be celebrating its 79th anniversary of independence. On the other hand, it will be the 78th Independence Day if we consider August 15, 1948, as the start date. It has been verified by official channels that India will commemorate its 79th Independence Day. The 79th Independence Day will be celebrated this year, according to a letter from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) that was sent by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The letter says that, "As India prepares to celebrate its 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today extended an invitation to all citizens to contribute their thoughts and ideas for his address from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15". Independence Day Date: India is set to celebrate its 79th Independence Day this Friday, August 15, 2025, with grand ceremonies planned across the country. About 79th Independence Day 2025 Based on the number of Independence Day celebrations that have taken place since 1947, India will commemorate its independence for the 79th time in 2025. In contrast, the United States commemorates its independence by counting the years since the declaration was adopted in 1776, with 2025 marking the 249th anniversary. Representatives of Panchayats from all around the nation have been invited as special guests to see the festivities at the Red Fort this year. Additionally, 50 of Delhi's best-performing Swachhta Karamcharis (sanitation employees) will receive special recognition. It was on August 15, 1947 that the country gained independence from British domination. The main Independence day celebration will take place at Delhi's Red Fort, where the prime minister will raise the flag, address the nation, and receive a 21-gun salute.
