Assam: Devotees flock to Kamakhya Temple for Ambubachi Mela
Guwahati (Assam) [India], June 23 (ANI): A large number of devotees on Monday visited the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati to offer prayers on the second day of the four-day Ambubachi Mela. The annual event honours the menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, believed to embody feminine power.
Ambubachi Mela takes place during the monsoon season, specifically in the Assamese month of Ahaar, around the middle of June. This year, tit will be celebrated from June 22 to June 26. Interestingly, the temple is closed on this day since the goddess is said to be menstruating for these four days.
After conducting Ambubachi Prabritti rituals, the main door of the Kamakhya temple closed on Sunday and will be reopened on June 26. It is one of the most revered centres of Tantric practices. It is regarded as one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Peethas in India.
The annual Ambubachi Mela, one of Assam's most revered Hindu festivals, commenced on Sunday at the historic Kamakhya Temple atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati. The event began with traditional rituals, marking the start of the four-day-long celebration that draws devotees from across India and abroad.
The Kamakhya temple management committee and the Kamrup (Metro) district administration have made all arrangements for the Ambubachi Mela.
Meawhile, in a post on X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended wishes for the festival, 'Today marks the beginning of the #Ambubachi Mahayog, an annual celebration of Maa Kamakhya's divine femininity. Spiritual Gurus and devotees from across the country will dawn upon the sacred Nilachal Hills to pray for Bharat. I welcome all pilgrims to Assam & wish everyone a divine experience and the choicest blessings of Maa Kamakhya.'
According to the government of Assam website, the Kamakhya temple, 7 km from Guwahati, is one of the largest Shakti shrines in the country. Situated on the Nilachal hills, it is an important pilgrimage centre for tantric worshippers and Hindus.
Several other pujas are organised in this temple, including Durga Puja, Durgadeul and Madandeul. Some of the other pujas performed in this temple include Manasa Puja, Pohan Biya and Vasanti Puja. (ANI)

The first batch of pilgrims will be flagged off from the Jammu base camp on July 2 and the Yatra will officially begin on July 3 via both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Sinha met with officials from all departments to review security, logistics, and coordination for this year's Amarnath Yatra. He also said that the administration and security forces have made better arrangements this year to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage for devotees from across the country. Speaking to the reporters, Sinha said, 'Officials from all departments were present in the meeting here administration and the Shrine Board have together made better arrangements. The security forces have made very robust security arrangements. I hope that this time, people will be able to undertake the yatra even more successfully than before, and the devotees coming from all over the country will have a better experience here...' Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also spoke on the necessary arrangements facilitated for the pilgrims of the Amarnath Yatra. He further stated that the Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha chaired two meetings ahead of the pilgrimage, one with the political parties and one with the civil society to ensure proper facilities for pilgrims. 'We have made the necessary arrangements to facilitate the pilgrims. The LG chaired two meetings, one with political parties and one with civil society. Pahalgam (Jammu & Kashmir) [India], June 30 (ANI): In a new development, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have installed facial recognition systems (FRS) along the Pahalgam route of Amarnath Yatra to deter any potential terror attacks against pilgrims. The system has a feature that alerts security forces in real-time in case any blacklisted person comes into the field of view of the surveillance cameras. Roof Ahmed, a resident of Anantnag, on his way to Pahalgam, told ANI that there are good security arrangements in the area. 'I thank the administration and the Jammu and Kashmir Police CRP, BSF and whoever is stationed here. I thank them wholeheartedly for the good security arrangements, and I request all the tourists to come here without any fear, ' he added further. Roof also mentioned the Pahalgam attack and the fear it brought among the tourists, due to which they were hesitant to come to Kashmir. He said: 'All the steps taken by the government to ensure safety are appreciated.' Ahead of the Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on July 3, CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) has rolled out a robust multi-layered security plan along Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), to ensure safety and security of the pilgrims. Jammu-Srinagar Highway is one of the vital routes for thousands of pilgrims. The CRPF has intensified surveillance, deployed K-9 (dog) squads alongside its personnel along the vital Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, a key route used by thousands of pilgrims, and strengthened highway patrols, with a special focus on sensitive stretches such as the Udhampur sector. The first batch of pilgrims will be flagged off from the Jammu base camp on July 2, 2025, while the Yatra will officially begin on July 3, 2025, via both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Earlier, in a preemptive effort to ensure safety during the upcoming Amarnath Yatra 2025, a joint mock landslide drill was conducted by the Indian Army, CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the JKSDRF (Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force) at Samroli, Toldi Nallah, on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Sunday. The exercise aimed to assess emergency preparedness in case of landslides or natural disasters during the pilgrimage. The simulation involved rescuing stranded vehicles and providing immediate aid to injured pilgrims, with security and disaster response teams efficiently coordinating evacuation and medical assistance. During the drill, a mock victim was safely rescued by the joint teams, administered first aid, and transported to a nearby hospital via ambulance. The exercise demonstrated seamless coordination among agencies for rapid response in real emergencies. Deputy SP (Headquarters) Udhampur, Prehlad Kumar, emphasised that security forces are fully equipped to handle any challenges during the Yatra and ensure pilgrims' safety. He stated that such drills enhance the readiness of disaster management and security personnel to address emergencies and protect devotees throughout the pilgrimage season. As the annual Amarnath Yatra approaches, security forces and civil administration have intensified preparations to ensure the safety and convenience of pilgrims. The 38-day pilgrimage, which begins on July 3, will see devotees travelling via the Baltal and Pahalgam routes to the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine. The first batch of pilgrims is scheduled to depart from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on July 2. Amarnath Yatra 2025: CRPF implements multi-layered security To secure the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) — a key route for the Yatra — the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has implemented a multi-tier security framework. The highway, frequently used by thousands of pilgrims, is now under heightened surveillance. Special focus has been placed on vulnerable stretches such as the Udhampur sector. CRPF personnel, supported by K-9 (dog) squads, are conducting continuous patrols, particularly in sensitive areas. The force has increased highway monitoring and deployed teams for rapid response in case of any incident. Joint mock drill tests emergency preparedness In a coordinated effort to enhance disaster readiness, a mock landslide drill was conducted on Sunday at Samroli, Toldi Nallah along the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Amarnath Yatra 2025: Security review meeting held in Udhampur Ahead of the Yatra, Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat chaired a high-level security meeting in Udhampur. Officials from the CRPF, CISF, district police, and traffic police participated. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Udhampur Amod Ashok Nagpure presented a comprehensive plan outlining force deployment, convoy management, emergency protocols, and langar (community kitchen) security. The DGP emphasised real-time coordination between agencies and the readiness of drone units, bomb disposal squads, and Quick Reaction Teams. Police tighten vigil in Jammu district The Jammu Police, in coordination with paramilitary forces, have established joint nakas (checkpoints) at strategic points across the district. These are operational 24/7, particularly near city peripheries, national highways, and approach roads to the Bhagwati Nagar base camp. The checkpoints focus on identity verification, vehicle screening, and detection of suspicious movement. They are supported by facial recognition systems at high-density zones. Random checks are also being conducted at hotels, guesthouses, and lodgement centres. Amarnath Yatra 2025: Offline registrations begin Offline registration for the Yatra began in Jammu, with special counters set up by the administration.
