On June 7, 1911, the name H.W. Ross appeared for just the second day in a row of a short stint as managing editor of the Marysville Appeal.
Not only was one of the youngest editors of the Marysville Appeal. He was one of the most famous privates of World War I. And he created one of the world's most enduring magazines after convincing a poker buddy, whose family made a fortune in yeast, that it would be a good investment.
Harold Ross, or H.W. Ross as he was known in his one and only byline story in Marysville, was the founder and first editor of The New Yorker magazine, a weekly periodical published continuously since 1925, and considered one of the top political and literary magazines in the world. Even today, it remains one of the rare magazines that earns more from subscriptions than advertising.
A native of Aspen, Colorado, who left home at an early age, Harold Ross, then 18, convinced 62-year-old Marysville Appeal editor John H. Miller, to hire him in early 1911.
Although Ross would later work for newspapers in San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Pasadena, Panama, New Orleans, Atlanta, Brooklyn, and Hoboken, New Jersey, one of his most significant assignments turned out to be his first, at the Marysville Appeal, according to Thomas Kunkel, author of "Genius in Disguise: Harold Ross of The New Yorker."
In his biography of Ross, Kunkel begins chapter 2, entitled "Tramp"—Ross was among the last of the tramp journalists who roamed from newspaper to newspaper and whose numbers included Mark Twain and Bret Harte—with this story:
"On a clear Sunday morning in March 1911, some three dozen anxious people crowded onto a smallish gasoline-powered freighter, the Sioux, which was docked on the Feather River in tiny Nicolaus, California, just north of Sacramento. The short trip they were about to make, upriver to Marysville, would take only a few hours, but there was a great deal more at stake than a diverting excursion. The passengers were rivermen, engineers, business leaders, the merely curious, and a handful of newspaper reporters. Representing the Marysville Appeal was H.W. Ross, as his byline had it, a gangly, gawky man-child of eighteen.
"Marysville had a problem: it was a river town whose river had silted up, useless, from years of unrestrained hydraulic mining. This had the effect of marooning Marysville from Sacramento (and therefore San Francisco), and put its future directly into the unwelcome hands of the railroads. With the mining finally shut down, there was new cause to think the Feather might again accommodate big steamers, but it all depended on whether the Sioux—which, though small, had a deep draft—could make it all the way upriver without getting stuck. As Ross summed it up in the Appeal two days later, 'The renavigating of the Feather is one of the most important moves in the history of Marysville—probably the most important…When boats are again running shippers will not be at the mercy of the railroads.' And beyond the obvious business ramifications, Ross reminded his readers, there were 'unbounded' social possibilities: 'The excursion of the future will not be made in a small launch with a dozen or so passengers, nor in a fifty-or sixty-foot pleasure craft—but it will be possible for excursion boats carrying hundreds of passengers to ply between this city and Sacramento—yes, even to {San Francisco] bay.'
"The news that day, as duly reported by H.W. Ross, was good: the Sioux had been unimpeded. The Appeal signaled the importance of the story not only in big headlines and top-of-the-page treatment, but by attaching Ross's byline to it. At this time in American journalism, a byline—the writer's name at the beginning of a story—was rare, for the most part reserved for articles of real significance or distinction. This is just one of the reasons it is difficult to follow the zigzag, vaporous trajectory of Ross's newspaper career."
Miller took a strong liking to his young reporter, and taught him the newspaper arts.
"…Ross, for his part, was a quick study. He had to be, merely to survive the grueling regimen. The Appeal published six days a week, eight pages a day. Since it specialized in local news (said one headline: 'Beggars Have Come To Town') and competed with the evening paper for readers, exhausting hours were required to report and write enough material to mill that maw.
"Five weeks after Ross wrote that story, Miller took ill. He was hospitalized in Sacramento but died on May 31. Out of respect (if not out of printer's inertia), Miller's name remained on the newspaper's masthead until June 3. Then, on June 6, it is replaced with this: 'H.W. Ross, Editor.' Still learning the finer points of eluding railroad Pinkertons and scarcely old enough to shave, Ross suddenly found himself in charge of a daily newspaper. Almost certainly he gave himself the battlefield promotion, but he had little choice: when Miller died, the Appeal's owner, Colonel E.A. Forbes, adjutant general of the state of California, was traveling on military business. At the time it all must have been a little terrifying, but two decades later Ross recalled the episode with the newspaperman's sangfroid: 'Someone had to edit the paper. The only part I couldn't do was write the editorials—we got a man for that and I did the rest.'"
Two months later, Ross's name disappeared from the mast without explanation.
Whether he was fired or just moved on, we'll never know.
In 1917, Ross was in the military as World War I erupted. His newspaper skills landed him a position with a brand new adventure: the military wanted a publication that spoke to the soldiers. During his time as as a contributor, and ultimately an editor of the brand new Stars and Stripes newspaper, Ross passed up every opportunity for a promotion and met several of the writers, including his first wife, who would later be critical to the successful launch of The New Yorker. He was praised by the military brass and President Wilson for his contributions.
In New York, he launched a magazine called Home Front modeled on Stars and Stripes, and was editor of two other magazines, before he convinced Raoul Flesichman, whose family had gotten reach selling yeast, to go in with him on creating a new magazine focuses on life in New York, in 1925. The magazine struggled, but survived, during the Depression, but it came of age during and after World War II. The magazine is known for its cartoonish covers and brilliant writing and editing, a tradition started by a man who cut his teeth writing about, and editing stories about, activities on, and around, the Feather River.

Rebecca Ross has been on a career hot streak many authors can only dream of. In April 2023, Ross published her breakout hit, " Divine Rivals." The young-adult fantasy about Iris Winnow, a journalist who gets entrenched in a war of the gods, became a New York Times bestseller. Its sequel, " Ruthless Vows," also hit the list when it came out just eight months later. Then, in June 2025, Paramount acquired the film rights to "Divine Rivals." Ross, 37, is continuing the momentum with a stand-alone adult romantasy, "Wild Reverence," set to be published on September 2. Taking place in the same universe as "Divine Rivals," "Wild Reverence" follows Matilda, the herald of the gods, who becomes entangled with the fate of a human lord she first encountered as a child. Despite her recent success, Ross told Business Insider that writing a novel felt like a far-off dream when she started her career. Making time to write Ross had aspirations of writing a novel while attending the University of Georgia, but she didn't immediately dedicate her career to it after she graduated in 2012. "I studied English because I love reading and writing," Ross told BI. "But then when I was working my 9-to-5 job, I really enjoyed it, but I realized I was just doing the same 9-to-5, 9-to-5, 9-to-5, and I wasn't writing at all." "A few years passed, and I was like, 'If I don't take this seriously and set aside time and try to write a novel, it's never going to happen, and this will be a dream that I never go after,'" she said. For Ross, dedicating her weekends to writing and waking up early to write on weekdays before her day job at a college's student accessibility services office was key to turning that dream into a reality. "I love writing almost before the sun rises," she said. "The world just feels really quiet. I don't have many distractions. I also just like writing then because I feel like my dreams are still very close to me in the morning." Eventually, after many early mornings, Ross finished a draft. She told BI that forcing herself to complete a book, regardless of the quality of the manuscript, helped boost her confidence and motivation. "I actually finished a draft, and it was like 140,000 words of a fantasy novel," she said. "It was not that good, but I finished it. And I was like, 'Oh my gosh. Here I am working 40 hours a week at a job, but I still made time to write a fantasy novel.' It took me about four months, but I was able to really get it done." Waiting for the breakout Shortly after she finished that first draft, Ross got the idea for "The Queen's Rising," a YA fantasy novel. She told BI she knew she could write it because she had already finished one book. "I just had this drive," Ross said. She finished "The Queen's Rising" in 2015 and landed a three-book deal with HarperTeen with the manuscript. Ross quit her day job at the end of 2015, and "The Queen's Rising" was published in February 2018. It didn't make the NYT bestseller list, but it helped Ross build a fan base. "It was a very quiet release," Ross said. "I had my readers, and they were just so lovely and loyal to me. They just followed me from book to book. I tried to invest in them as much as I could." Ross kept writing until she struck gold with "Divine Rivals." "I remember telling myself, 'I will just keep writing books as long as I can. As long as an editor wants to acquire it, I'll just keep going,'" she told BI. "It took seven books, but eventually one broke out." Indeed, "Divine Rivals" went viral after its release in April 2023, partly thanks to BookTok. The novel changed her career trajectory, but Ross thinks it's important for people to know she didn't find that wide audience with her first book. "I think some authors feel discouraged if their debut doesn't hit right away, and that can feel like so much pressure," Ross told BI. "A lot of times, you could even see publisher support go down. That can be really difficult." "Sometimes, it does take so many books before you do write one that really resonates for a lot of readers," she said. Confidence is key Ross said any aspiring author should "be dedicated to your writing time," whenever and however often you can do it, even though it's easy to "shove your writing time to the side" if you have a day job, are in school, or are taking care of children. "A book is made little by little," Ross said. "If you can't write every day, that's OK. You find a way to make it work." Ross also said it's important to "finish what you start." "Once you finish something, you learn so much even about how to structure a novel, and then your confidence is up, like, 'OK, I can do this, so let's do it better again,'" Ross said. She added that hopeful authors shouldn't let naysayers discourage them either. "You might have some people that support you, and there's definitely going to be people that think it's never going to go anywhere, unfortunately," she said. "You can't let those types of comments get you down or make you think you can't do it because you can."

Julia Whelan has narrated 600 audiobooks and counting. So why isn't she paid like it?

Chances are, you've heard Julia Whelan's voice. She's the award-winning narrator behind more than 600 audiobooks by a long list of bestselling authors including Taylor Jenkins Reid, Emily Henry, Michael Crichton, V.E. Schwab and Kristin Hannah. She's also narrated long-form articles for The New Yorker, The Atlantic and Vanity Fair. You may have read her own writing, too. Whelan's first novel, 2018's 'My Oxford Year,' has been adapted to a Netflix film, out Friday, starring Sofia Carson. The story actually began as a screenplay by Allison Burnett and had been gestating in development for years. Whelan was brought in to help with the script because she had studied abroad at Oxford her junior year of college. Producers then asked if she thought it would make a good book. 'I was like, 'Nothing has ever wanted to be a book more. Please let me do this,'' she recalls. It ended up an international bestseller. Her second novel, 2022's 'Thank You For Listening,' was critically praised. ('Thank You For Listening' is about a former actor-turned-audiobook narrator who falls in love with another audiobook narrator.) You may have even seen Whelan on TV — she began her career as a child actor, with roles in 'Fifteen and Pregnant' and on the series 'Once and Again.' Despite her various pursuits, though, she has no plans to leave narration behind. 'I feel like I was born to do it,' she said. 'It's everything that I love and that I'm good at and everything I want to be doing.' That's a good thing, because the audiobook industry is growing. Statista projects this year it will reach $9.84 billion because of smartphones, the increased popularity of audio content and people's desire to multitask. Despite the appetite for audiobooks, for narrators, 'the financial aspect makes zero sense,' says Whelan. She's founded her own publishing company, Audiobrary, to help narrators get paid more fairly. Whelan, who has narrated as many as 70 books in one year, spoke to The Associated Press about the audiobook industry, Audiobrary and her own writing. Answers are edited for clarity and brevity. WHELAN: The only reason I was doing 70 books a year was because that's how many books you have to do when you're first starting out to keep your head above water because the rates are low. It would be OK if there were a kickback for success, but narrators don't get royalties. As we've seen the industry grow and as we've seen the cache of certain narrators expand, and we know listeners will seek out audiobooks that their favorite narrators record. It doesn't make sense to me that we should be cut out of the long-term financial benefit of success. Audiobrary does a profit-share model with writers, who I also feel don't get enough percentage of the pie, and a royalty share for narrators. We are also a direct-to-consumer retail channel, so when you buy directly from us, you're not giving 50-75% of that sale to a retailer. You're giving it directly to the people who made the product. WHELAN: I create character lists. I create pronunciation lists, and I do the necessary research for that. The prep time can vary book to book significantly, depending on how complicated the book is. WHELAN: It ruins everything. I'm probably the only person left who wears a mask on a plane at this point, but everything falls apart if I get sick. You're messed up for three or four months. Everything just gets delayed, especially when I was doing 70 books a year, there's no room for error there. WHELAN: At this point, there's still enough work to go around and they are doing the books that have the budget frankly to use them. But I think that audiobook fans — not your casual audiobook user, but fans — have favorite narrators and they're going to look for books by those narrators. So, in stunt-casting situations, sometimes someone is incredible at it, and they are perfect for the book. But sometimes it feels like a very craven, just marketing ploy. I don't feel infringed upon by them, but I do worry about a future situation where most of the work is going to AI. I don't lie awake at night worried, but everyone's threatened right now. It's very, very hard to even begin to predict what the future could look like. WHELAN: I think the kids would say that it's ableist to say that if you didn't read a book with your eyeballs, then you didn't read it, considering many people have many limitations that would prevent them from physically reading a book. So then are you telling them they've never read a book before? Actual data and studies show that listening to a book actually triggers the same response in the brain as reading it, and that the interpretation and understanding of that book is on par with having read it. WHELAN: There's been about four ideas that are constantly in rotation, but I think I've narrowed it down. I think I'm ready to at least start exploring one of them at the beginning of next year. WHELAN: I very much think we could. I have said no up to this point because, this time around, I want to be very creatively involved. There's just too many things about audiobooks that someone could get wrong not knowing anything about the industry. I want be involved so I'm willing to hold onto it until the right situation comes along.
