Kathie Lee Gifford fears she will die ‘a lot sooner' than one of her closest friends
Kathie Lee Gifford fears she will die 'a lot sooner' than one of her closest friends.
The 71-year-old former 'Today' show co-host appeared at the Plaza Hotel on Tuesday (03.06.25) to present an award to her long-time friend and former colleague Jill Martin, 49, who is now cancer free following treatment for stage two breast cancer, and she grew visibly emotional as she reflected on her mortality during her a speech at the City of Hope's Spirit of Life Luncheon in New York.
She told attendees about how she feared her time on Earth was running out: 'Tick-tock, I better get off the stage.'
Her appearance came just weeks after Kathie Lee revealed she had endured a 'really, really tough' few years marked by serious health issues and personal challenges.
Kathie Lee, who lives in Tennessee, returned to New York for the luncheon, where she was assisted onto the stage by Jill – on the advice of what she described as her 'personal therapist's orders'.
The presenter underwent a total hip replacement in June 2024 and later fractured her pelvis in two places during a fall at home, requiring hospitalisation for over a week.
In her speech, Kathie Lee praised Jill's resilience throughout her cancer battle, calling her 'one of my favourite people on the entire planet'.
She added: 'Over the years, our friendship has deepened us. Many do, if you are blessed. And honestly, I think about Jill and I smile even when she was going through her journey and she still is.
'We would get on the phone together and we pray and we'd laugh. I thank her for what she was doing for others.'
Addressing the audience, Kathie Lee encouraged people to 'be there for people' regardless of what they were facing.
And as her voice trembled, she added: 'So when I say that Jill will be my friend for life, I mean it. She will be there for me and I will be there for her.
'I'll probably go a lot sooner.'
Kathie Lee, who previously co-hosted 'Live! with Regis and Kathie Lee', has spoken openly about recent health struggles. Speaking to OK! magazine, she said: 'I've had a really, really tough last three years with parts of my body that have just worn out because I did so much in my life. I had my hip replaced, I had my shoulder done – that was from an old injury that finally got so bad, I couldn't ignore it anymore. Yet my health is perfect! I am crumbling!'

Ed Sheeran at the top of Benny Blanco and Selena Gomez's wedding guest list
Ed Sheeran is at the top of the guest list for Benny Blanco and Selena Gomez's wedding. The couple got engaged in December after over a year of dating and although they haven't yet set a date for their nuptials, the 37-year-old groom-to-be admitted he's already invited his friend and collaborator, who he has previously worked with on the likes of 'Shape of You', 'Castle on the Hill', and Justin Bieber's 'Love Yourself'. Speaking on the Australian TV show 'Today', Benny said: "I just told him, 'I'm going to have a wedding and you're going to come to the wedding. "Eventually Ed will come to our wedding when we do have one, but unfortunately we have not scheduled one yet - but we will!" After Benny and Selena got engaged, they created songs that eventually ended up on their first joint album, 'I Said I Love You First', which was released in March, but they had never deliberately planned to make such a project together. Speaking about how their LP came to fruition, Benny said: "We just started making music in our house as a little fun activity and then all of a sudden we had one song, then two songs, then three songs, then four songs. "She was just a joy to work with and it was better to work with her than anyone else because, at the end of the day, I get to kiss her too.'" During the recording process, a bird caused Benny and Selena to fight. Speaking to Kent 'Smallzy' Small on the latest episode of the 'Smallzy's Surgery' podcast, he said: "The biggest fight we had making the record is we did it at home, and there were birds that would chirp only when she was recording and never any time else. "And I didn't believe her for the first two weeks." Selena recently revealed she does not like to refer to Benny as her fiance. Appearing with her partner on the 'Table Manners' podcast in April, the 32-year-old singer explained: "[Calling him my fiance is] so strange. "I just say, my partner or Benny. But the other day, I caught myself saying 'Well, my boyfriend ...' but that's not quite why we're there." And after he and Selena shared their first kiss, Benny knew he wanted to "have a baby" with his lover. Appearing on Spotify's 'Countdown To' series in March, he said: "I knew right after we kissed, I was like, 'Oh wow. I'm probably going to marry this person'. "Well, I didn't say marry but I was like, 'I'm probably going to have a baby with this person.' "

Jenna Bush Hager is 'still searching for Hoda Kotb's replacement'
Jenna Bush Hager is "still searching" for Hoda Kotb's replacement on the 'Today' show. The 60-year-old broadcaster left the show in January, and Jenna is still seeking a permanent replacement for her former co-host. Jenna, 43, told People: "We're still searching. "We definitely want somebody permanent at some point just because that's our show, and I think the 'Today' show is such a family. "So to have somebody sit in that seat means a lot to all of us. So it will happen. I think we've all just been kind of living day by day and we don't have any developments yet, but we will." Hoda recently returned to the show as a guest co-host, and Jenna relished the experience of being reunited with her long-time friend. Jenna shared: "Even if time goes by, there's a connection that is undeniable, and I felt that way being with her. I just felt like my nervous system kind of relaxed and it was so nice to be with her. "There could have been no better reunion. It felt really great." Meanwhile, Hoda recently revealed that she decided to leave 'Today' because her daughter was facing a health crisis. The veteran broadcaster - who is the adoptive mother of Haley, eight, and six-year-old Hope - walked away from the show after her daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Speaking to 'Extra', Hoda explained: "We thought it was the flu and it wasn't getting better. I went to the pediatrician a handful of times, and they kept saying that it seemed like the flu and don't worry, don't worry, and one day I looked at her and I said, 'I'm worried.' So I took her to the ER and she was in the ICU for several days, so it was difficult. "It definitely factored in [to my decision to leave]. I mean, look, all I did was look at her numbers. I had my phone on the set when we were doing the news, and I was looking, 'cause you can see what her levels are doing, and if they drop too low, she needs help. So I was constantly looking at it, calling the school, calling my babysitter, calling, and I'm like, 'Why am I calling all the time? Just, you be there."
