US markets today: Wall Street holds near record highs ahead of inflation data; Federal Reserve cautious on rate cuts as stagflation fears rise
The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 77 points, or 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.2% in early trading, according to AP.
Economists expect July's consumer price index to show a 2.8% year-on-year increase in living costs — slightly above June's 2.7% — with groceries, fuel and other essentials driving the uptick. Inflation, while well below the peak of over 9% three years ago, remains above the US Federal Reserve's 2% target.
President Donald Trump's tariff policies have added to concerns that price pressures could intensify.
The risk, analysts warn, is of 'stagflation' — where inflation stays high while economic growth slows. Fed Governor Michelle Bowman said on Saturday she sees the job market as the bigger worry and supports three interest rate cuts this year, citing a weaker-than-expected July jobs report. Trump has also publicly pressed the Fed to cut rates.

However, Fed Chair Jerome Powell and other policymakers remain cautious, preferring to wait for more data on tariff impacts before deciding. Tuesday's CPI reading could influence the central bank's next move.
Strategists at Stifel, led by Thomas Carroll and Barry Bannister, cautioned that consumer spending is already slowing, potentially dragging the US economy close to a standstill in the second half of 2025.
'Rate cuts cannot save an overvalued S&P 500,' they warned, suggesting that only stronger corporate earnings can support current market valuations.
Among movers, Micron Technology surged 4.8% after raising quarterly profit and revenue guidance, citing higher memory chip prices. AMC Entertainment rose 7.5% after reporting better-than-expected spring results, with record ticket prices and higher food and beverage spending per customer.
On the downside, C3.ai plunged 31% after warning of an operating loss of up to $124.9 million for the first quarter, with CEO Thomas Siebel calling the sales performance 'completely unacceptable.'
Overseas, equity markets in Europe and Asia ended mixed on modest moves. In the US bond market, the 10-year Treasury yield held steady at 4.27%.

Cool comfort worth the extra 100, say passengers on board state's first AC local
Kolkata: Suburban commuters on board the maiden AC EMU Ranaghat-Sealdah train were ecstatic to experience the much-awaited service on the first day of the week. The feelings were mixed when it came to coughing up Rs 120 for the ride from Ranaghat to Sealdah. While some seemed sensitive about paying Rs 100 more for a journey that otherwise costs Rs 20 in non-AC rakes, others said the cool comfort and the superior travel justified the fare. A monthly ticket costs Rs 2,430. The one-way fare ranges from Rs 35 to Rs 120 depending on the distance travelled. The train was flagged off with much fanfare from Sealdah on Sunday. Commercial services started at 8.29 am on Monday. The inaugural commercial service was fairly crowded, with several passengers standing. But there was enough legroom, unlike the non-AC local trains. Ranaghat resident Dilip Ghosh, who works in Khadi Bhavan on CR Avenue, was smiling as he looked around the ICF-made rake, from the AC vent over the seat, noting the time as the automatic doors closed and the train chugged out of Ranaghat station. "This is like travelling on a metro train. We are covering 90 km in AC comfort and saving time as well. It would have taken around Rs 1,000 for the same ride on a hired car and taken me at least two-and-a-half hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo I shall reach Sealdah station at 10.10 am. "I shall try to catch the return train at 6.50 pm so I can be home by 8.45 pm (the Down train reaches Ranaghat at 8.32 pm)," he added. "I don't know...," said Balmiki Ray, a passenger who took the train from Khardah. "I would have paid Rs 5 for the same journey. Today I bought a ticket to Sealdah for Rs 60. The monthly passes will be a bit cheaper. But I wonder if it makes sense to increase my daily commuting expense 12 times for this comfort," the worker employed with a shop at Bagri Market said. Biplab Mondol, who boarded the train from Chakdah, echoed: "Today I paid Rs 105 because I was curious about the facility. The monthly ticket will cost me Rs 2,125. It's difficult to make a call when the daily commuting by non-AC train costs barely Rs 10," Mondol said. Arati Saha, a schoolteacher from Krishnanagar, insisted: "This is the ultimate comfort and safety. Two reserved coaches for ladies, that, too, air-conditioned! Only two rides may seem tokenistic, but this is certainly a significant start." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Cryptocurrency Live News & Updates : Bitcoin Retreats to $119K Amid Inflation Concerns
12 Aug 2025 | 03:55:12 AM IST Bitcoin's rise above $122,000 faced significant selling pressure, dropping to $118,500. Analysts indicate that upcoming U.S. inflation data could lead to increased volatility in the market. Bitcoin has experienced a pullback to $119,000 after reaching a high of $122,200, with analysts from Bitfinex suggesting that upcoming U.S. CPI and PPI inflation reports could significantly influence market momentum. Meanwhile, Ethereum has dipped below $4,200, and BNB has also fallen below 800 USDT, reflecting a broader trend of declining prices among major cryptocurrencies. In contrast, the memecoin BONK has secured a $25 million investment from Safety Shot, which acquired a 10% revenue stake in a leading platform in Solana's token launch market. This acquisition is expected to provide Safety Shot with a steady income stream linked to BONK's performance. Additionally, Solana's SOL and Sui have seen declines of 3%-4%, indicating a challenging environment for altcoins. As Bitcoin approaches critical resistance levels, traders are advised to remain vigilant for potential volatility and price corrections, particularly as the market reacts to macroeconomic indicators.
