Penn State goes 20-0, takes lead on the opening day of Division I men's wrestling championships
It was the first time the Nittany Lions went a perfect 20-0 on the first day of action and sent all 10 of its qualifiers — one in every weight class — to the quarterfinals.
Penn State seeks its 12th championship in 14 years under coach Cael Sanderson. The Nittany Lions could be a threat to eclipse the scoring record they posted last year.
Penn State's Carter Starocci remains in contention for an unprecedented fifth national title after a pair of wins at 184 pounds. His four previous wins came at 174 pounds.
Nebraska is in second place with 28 points and Oklahoma State is in third with 27.
Nebraska sent five wrestlers through to the quarterfinals. Oklahoma State, under first-year coach David Taylor, sent six wrestlers to the quarterfinals, the second-most behind Penn State.
'I thought we wrestled pretty well,' Taylor said. 'It's the national tournament. There's ups and downs, but I thought we did pretty well.'
Iowa, Minnesota and Ohio State are tied for fourth with 18 points. Minnesota's Gable Steveson, the 2021 Olympic gold medalist seeking his third national title at heavyweight, won two matches Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Starting 5 Season 2: Release date speculation, cast and plot details – Everything we know so far
By Aman Shukla Published on August 21, 2025, 19:00 IST Last updated August 21, 2025, 11:13 IST Yo, basketball junkies! Starting 5 on Netflix had folks glued to their screens with its first season, and now everyone's hyped for Season 2. After dropping some serious NBA drama in October 2024, the show's ready to bring more heat. Let's break down everything known about Starting 5 Season 2—release date guesses, the star-studded cast, and what kind of stories are coming. Starting 5 Season 2 Potential Release Date Nobody's got an official date yet, but let's piece together the clues. The first season came out in October 2024, right after the 2023-24 NBA season wrapped. Season 2's already filming, capturing all the action from the 2024-25 NBA season, including the playoffs. If they stick to the same rhythm, expect Season 2 to land around October 2025. That gives the crew time to film the season, catch those clutch playoff moments, and edit it all into something epic. Some fans on X are tossing around ideas about a fall 2025 premiere to sync with the 2025-26 NBA season kickoff, but it's all speculation for now. Keep your eyes peeled for a trailer around summer 2025—that'll probably clue us in on the exact drop date. Starting 5 Season 2 Expected Cast The cast for Season 2 is straight fire, with a mix of NBA vets and young ballers ready to shine. Netflix spilled the beans on five players who'll be front and center: Jaylen Brown (Boston Celtics) : Dude just snagged Finals MVP in 2024, and now he's back to defend that Celtics crown. His story's gonna dig into his Olympic team drama and that beef with Nike. Kevin Durant (Phoenix Suns) : KD's a legend, no question. He's chasing another ring with the Suns, and you know it's gonna be a wild ride watching him ball out. James Harden (Los Angeles Clippers) : The Beard's at a crossroads with the Clippers. His storyline's probably gonna be all about proving he's still got it. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder) : Shai's an MVP contender and a straight-up star. Expect him to show off his leadership and maybe make a deep playoff run. Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana Pacers): This kid's blowing up, and his breakout season's gonna be a big focus. Could he lead the Pacers to the Finals? Big shoutout to Shams Charania for dropping the cast news. Oh, and fun fact: Jayson Tatum, who was a Season 1 star, handed the spotlight to his Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown after their 2024 championship win. This lineup's got something for everyone—old-school fans and newbies alike. Starting 5 Season 2 Potential Plot Season 2's bringing that same Starting 5 vibe: raw, real, and packed with hoops and heart. The 10 episodes will track the 2024-25 NBA season, diving into the lives of these five players both on the court and off. Here's what to expect: Jaylen Brown's Grind : Fresh off that Finals MVP, Brown's got the weight of Boston on his shoulders. He's dealing with the pressure to repeat, plus some personal stuff like getting left off Team USA and his issues with Nike. Kevin Durant's Mission : KD's all about legacy. He's pushing the Suns toward a championship, and you'll see him battling to stay at the top of his game. James Harden's Fight : Harden's future with the Clippers is shaky. His story's gonna be about proving doubters wrong and finding his place in the league. Shai and Tyrese Takeover : These two are the future of the NBA. Shai's leading OKC with swagger, while Haliburton's got the Pacers dreaming big. Fans on X are already hyping a possible Finals face-off between these young guns. Big Themes: Look for stories about pressure, family, loyalty, and dealing with the media spotlight. Season 2's aiming to fix Season 1's pacing hiccups, with tighter episodes and more emotional punches. With LeBron James' Uninterrupted, Peyton Manning's Omaha Productions, and Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Ground Productions behind it, this season's gonna be slick, emotional, and full of those 'whoa' moments—think insane dunks mixed with real-life family vibes. Throwback Thursday: Penn State opens James Franklin era in Dublin with win over UCF
The 2025-26 college football season will kick off this Saturday with a ranked matchup in Dublin, Ireland between Kansas State, ranked 20th in the US LBM Coaches Poll, and Iowa State, ranked 21st. It will be the 10th FBS game played in Ireland since 1988. Let's go back to 2014, when Penn State and UCF met in Croke Park in Dublin to open up the season. The game, called the Croke Park Classic, lived up to its name with a tight 26-24 final that saw Penn State's Sam Ficken kick the game-winning 36-yard field goal. Beyond being the Nittany Lions' only international game in program history, it was also the first for new head coach James Franklin. Franklin, who had built Vanderbilt into a competitive program from 2011-2013, was hoping to bring Penn State back to the top of college football. Franklin's journey started on Aug. 30 against the Knights, who were coming off a 12-1 season that included a 37-34 win over the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium. Franklin inherited former five-star quarterback Christian Hackenberg, and he was the difference-maker in the 2014 game. The sophomore gunslinger racked up 454 yards passing — still a single-game program record — with one touchdown and two interceptions. Wide receivers Geno Lewis had eight receptions for 173 yards, while DaeSean Hamilton had 11 receptions for 165 yards. The Nittany Lions were in control throughout the game, with a 79-yard touchdown pass to Lewis giving them a 20-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter. UCF backup quarterback Justin Holman led the Knights back, however, with a passing and rushing touchdown to take a 24-23 lead with 1:13 to go. From there, Hackenberg pulled off a game-winning march with first-down throws to Lewis and running back Bill Belton. He set up Ficken for a chip-shot field goal — his fourth of the game — and he hit it to give Penn State its first win in the James Franklin era. The Nittany Lions would roll to a 4-0 start, but ran into trouble in Big Ten play and finished 6-6. They'd end the year with a win in the Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College, their first bowl win since the 2009 season. Fast-forward to 2025, and Franklin has certainly succeeded in turning the program around. The Nittany Lions, ranked third in the coaches poll and second in the AP poll, have national championship aspirations in Franklin's 12th season at the helm. Penn State's rise under Franklin all started on a Saturday in Dublin.

Defending champion Penn State volleyball unbothered by No. 2 ranking behind rival Nebraska
Penn State head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley was joined at the 2025 ESPYS by her five graduating seniors as she was honored with the Jimmy V Award for perseverance after she battled cancer during the 2024 season. The Nittany Lions ended up finishing the year hoisting their first NCAA national championship since 2014. "I was so happy that my entire family was there, the five (graduating) seniors and the coaching staff to just rehash stories of the Final Four and just the season," Schumacher-Cawley recalled to USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday, referring to graduates Jess Mruzik, Taylor Trammell, Camryn Hannah, Anjelina Starck and Quinn Menger. "When the season ended in December, all the seniors were done and kind of went their own way. So for us to get back together and to enjoy some time, it was so special and it was something that I'll never forget." The 2024 season had a storybook ending. Penn State went 29-2 in the regular season, clinched a share of the Big Ten title for the first time since 2017 and defeated rival Nebraska twice in the same season for the first time in program history, all while navigating Schumacher-Cawley's breast cancer diagnosis. It's now officially time to turn the page on their championship as Penn State prepares to open the 2025 season and start their title defense against Creighton on Saturday. "We're done talking about last year's team," Schumacher-Cawley said. "Every semester is a new team and a new season. We'll take the lessons we've learned and move forward with this group and let them find their identity." Penn State will look a little different this year after losing five seniors, including Mruzik, the 2024 Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 NCAA tournament, who you simply "can't replace," Schumacher-Cawley said. That may explain why the defending champion Nittany Lions are ranked No. 2 in the preseason AVCA Coaches Poll behind Big Ten foe Nebraska. But if you ask Penn State, they "don't necessarily care." "The rankings are for the fans and it gives everyone something to talk about," Schumacher-Cawley said. "We don't really talk about the awards and we don't talk about the preseason rankings. "With our players we just stress getting better every day in the gym. ... Every week is a different challenge and it's just how you attack it." New leaders emerge after seniors graduate Schumacher-Cawley said the team will rely on returning players like senior libero Gillian Grimes and senior middle blocker Jordan Hopp to take on leadership in the locker room. "I try to empower every single player to be a leader in their own way, in their own voice," Schumacher-Cawley said. "It's the players that were on the team last year that got a taste of what it took to win a Big Ten (title), be at a Final Four and win a championship. "They've taken the responsibility to help the new players and the younger ones on how we do things here and what's helped us be successful." Grimes is one of three Nittany Lions named to the preseason All-Big Ten Team, in addition to sophomore setter Izzy Starck, the AVCA National Freshman of the Year last season, and junior outside hitter Kennedy Martin. "I couldn't be on that list without my teammates and without my coaches, so I'm really happy for that," Grimes said at the Big Ten media day last month, highlighting a team-first philosophy that pulses through Penn State. Schumacher-Cawley didn't even wear her championship ring at media day after becoming the first female women's volleyball coach to win an NCAA championship. "It's for (the players) to show and wear. I'll keep mine in the nice box at home and let it sit there." The ring features two pink diamonds in honor of Schumacher-Cawley's battle with breast cancer. She announced she was cancer-free in February. Penn State reloads through transfer portal Penn State landed All-American Kennedy Martin in the transfer portal, who Schumacher-Cawley said "just fits in" with the team's culture. Martin led the nation in points per set (6.28) and was second in kills per set (5.57) last season during her sophomore campaign at Florida. "(Kennedy) brings a high level of play, but she is so fun to be around and she is such a great teammate," Schumacher-Cawley said. "I'm excited to see her wear the blue and white and see her compete this weekend for us. And I think she just brings a level of confidence to the group and she's going to help everyone be better." The Nittany Lions also added Saint Louis setter Addie Lyon and Ohio State outside hitter Emmi Sellman, who Schumacher-Cawley said "almost single handedly beat us last year when she was at Ohio State." 'There's always been pressure for us' Penn State women's volleyball is used to having a bullseye on their back. The Nittany Lions have won eight national championships, the second-most of any school behind Stanford (9), including a historic four-peat from 2007 to 2010. "There's always just been pressure for us," Starck said. "Coming into this season, it's just the same mindset we always have of how we work hard with each other and how we push each other. I definitely think winning the national championship last year helps us, because we know what it takes and we know how to help the new players." The Nittany Lions have a tough schedule and will have to go through Nebraska twice (Oct. 3 and Nov. 28) during the regular season, in addition to facing at least 15 other teams that made it to the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The spotlight will be even brighter as Penn State will have 16 nationally televised matchups across FOX, BTN, and FS1, up from 12 nationally broadcast regular-season games last year. "You have to play great competition to prepare for the Big 10 Conference," Schumacher-Cawley said. "Being in these opening tournaments will set the tone and show us what we need to do and how we need to be better... the end goal is to be great in November and December." Penn State opens the season against Creighton on Saturday at the AVCA First Serve Showcase at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska. The matchup will be broadcast on FS1 Network at 5 p.m. ET.
