Doctors issuing fake medical certificates pose threat to food safety in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 27 (UNI) Doctors issuing fake medical certificates to hotel employees have undermined the Kerala Health Department's efforts to ensure food safety standards.
Citing incidents where hotel employees were found in possession of fake medical certificates at several locations, Kerala Health Minister Veena George has directed the Health Department and the Food Safety Department to conduct a statewide inspection of health cards.
The directive follows a report from Pathanamthitta, where an inspection by the Health Department raised suspicions that a catering unit had obtained fake health cards from a laboratory. Subsequently, the minister ordered a comprehensive investigation along with statewide inspections.
As per the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, it is mandatory for all employees working in food establishments to possess a valid health card. To facilitate this, Karunya pharmacies are providing the typhoid vaccine at a highly affordable rate.
Establishments found employing workers without a valid health card or with fake medical certificates will have their licences cancelled, the minister warned.
She further stated that legal action will be taken against doctors issuing fake medical certificates, including the suspension of their licences.
Health cards are issued after medical examinations to ensure that individuals involved in food preparation and distribution are free from contagious diseases.
This is crucial, as viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms can be transmitted through food handlers, potentially leading to outbreaks of disease.
Therefore, medical tests are conducted to verify that employees are free from infectious diseases, wounds, skin infections, and other health issues.
According to the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, the medical fitness certificate obtained after the examination must be kept on record at the establishment.

Screening camps to detect cancer early in men in Alappuzha district

As part of the second phase of the Arogyam, Anandam - Keep Cancer Away campaign of the Health department, cancer screening camps will be organised across Alappuzha district to detect oral and colon cancers in men, District Collector Alex Varghese has said. He said here on Friday that clinical screening camps would be conducted under the aegis of primary health centres, targeting bus stands, autorickshaw stands, railway stations, government offices, resident associations, and men's self-help groups. Men above the age of 30 will be screened. Those found with symptoms will be provided follow-up treatment. As part of the campaign, pamphlets will be read out in mosques, churches, and other places of worship. Cancer awareness questionnaires will be distributed. A letter titled Achhan Ariyaan, designed to help recognise cancer symptoms, will be disseminated through anganwadis and schools in the district. Activities such as anti-tobacco awareness, transforming schools into tobacco-free campuses, and establishing tobacco cessation clinics are also part of the campaign. Officials said the aim of the second phase was to ensure cancer prevention in as many men as possible. In the first phase of the campaign, cancer screening was conducted among women. A total of 1,20,846 women were screened across the district and cancer was detected in 57 of them, who were provided medical treatment.

Transaction adviser being appointed for PPP model in 11 hospitals: Delhi Minister

New Delhi: Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh said on Friday that the government is working to introduce the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in 11 hospitals and a transaction adviser is being appointed for the purpose. Speaking to reporters after an inspection at Bawana's Maharshi Valmiki hospital, Singh said the government is committed to implementing the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and address concerns of patients and the doctors. 'We have come across some lapses and shortcomings at Maharshi Valmiki Hospital and I have ordered their resolution within 15 days,' said Singh. He claimed that the Health Department was on the path of recovery after suffering due to mismanagement of the previous AAP government. The Health Minister pointed to delays in construction of an operation theatre at the hospital which has not been completed for over a year, problems with civil works, and shortage of staff. The Delhi Health Minister's visit to the hospital comes a day after the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) booked former health ministers and AAP leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj and Satyendar Jain for alleged corruption in health infrastructure projects involving 24 hospitals and expenditure of Rs 5,590 crore by the Delhi Government. A cheating, breach of trust and conspiracy case was registered after the Centre, on the recommendation of Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, granted sanction for proceedings against the previous government's minister under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The financial embezzlement linked to the projects, mired in inexplicable delays and astronomical cost overruns, took place in 2018-19, said the official. Massive irregularities, unexplained delays, and significant misappropriation of funds have been found in the construction of various hospitals, polyclinics and ICU infrastructure across the city, said an investigator. Substantial deviations and cost escalations, amounting to several hundred crores, were observed. Not a single project was completed within the prescribed timeline, said the complaint filed on August 22 by the then Leader of Opposition, Vijender Gupta. Gupta had highlighted grave irregularities and suspected corruption in various health infrastructure projects under the GNCTD. The complaint named former Health Ministers Bharadwaj and Jain, alleging systematic manipulation of project budgets, misuse of public funds, and collusion with private contractors.

Deaths due to rat fever, people urged to stay vigilant in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, June 27 (UNI) Following the 29 confirmed deaths and 30 suspected fatalities till May this year, people are being cautioned against rat fever, a serious disease that can progress rapidly during ongoing Monsoon rains in Kerala. 'Those who come into contact with soil or contaminated water must take Doxycycline tablets as prescribed by health workers. If anyone develops a fever after exposure to soil or contaminated water, it is absolutely essential to consult a doctor immediately,' Kerala Health Minister Veena George has said. 'Workers under the employment guarantee scheme, sanitation workers, volunteers, those engaged in planting and gardening, and children who play in the soil are at higher risk of contracting leptospirosis. They must take Doxycycline without fail,' the Minister advised. Leptospirosis (rat fever) spreads when bacteria from the urine or excreta of infected animals—such as rats, bandicoots, cows, goats, or dogs—enter the human body through contaminated soil or water. The bacteria can enter through cuts or wounds on the skin, or through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Those exposed to soil or contaminated water should take 200 mg of Doxycycline (two 100 mg tablets) once a week, as advised by health workers. 'Doxycycline is available free of cost at all government hospitals. Seek medical attention immediately if early symptoms of leptospirosis are noticed.' 'Though leptospirosis is dangerous, it can be prevented, and lives can be saved with timely precautions,' she added. UNI DS ARN
