Neo Maema to use Bafana's Chan campaign to gain match fitness

TimesLIVE2 days ago
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema has explained how he handled the time while he was not playing at the club.
Maema, 29, who is part of the Bafana Bafana African Nations Championship (Chan) squad, said he managed to keep himself motivated while he struggled for game time last season.
The South Africans kick off their Group C campaign in the Chan — the Confederation of African Football's tournament for local-based combinations — against Algeria at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda on August 8 (4pm)
Since joining Sundowns from Bloemfontein Celtic in 2021, Maema has racked up 120 games, scoring 13 goals with providing 14 assists while winning the league in each of the last four seasons.

'In football, you have to be professional first and the next thing is to accept the situation you are in,' Maema said after Bafana's 1-1 Chan warm-up friendly draw against Angola at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday.
'Make sure you look at yourself, check your performances and how you train and make sure you change a few things and work harder to come back strong. So, I'm my own motivation.
'I make sure that whenever I get an opportunity, whether it is an international team or my club, there are no issues there.'
This is the second time Maema has been called up to Chan squad having played a crucial role in the qualifiers. He said he will use the opportunity of playing in the finals in East Africa to get his match fitness back.
'It's a huge achievement for me to be here; I'm excited and it's an honour to represent the country in arguably the second-biggest tournament in Africa. I'm happy,' he said.
'It's all about trying to get a few [game] minutes and, if the chance comes, to play. Coach Molefi Ntseki allowed me to come; it was my first call-up last time and I was happy to join the team.'
The Chan is being co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from August 2 to 30.
Maema is optimistic South Africa will do well.
'We are professionals, we don't need a lot of time, we just need cohesion between the players because we come from different teams and we just need to make sure we come together.
'Match fitness is always going to be a bit of a problem but I don't think it's something to worry about because we have a week left before our first game and we will push hard to make sure we are ready for the tournament.'
Maema might also us the Chan as a last chance to try to impress Downs coach Miguekl Cardoso, with whom he fell out of favour last season. Reports are the midfielder might be on his way out of Chloorkop and a strong campaign in East Africa might sway a change in thinking from the Brazilians.

SA ‘champions' beat Aussies in last-ball thriller to qualify for legends final

The South Africans will now face Pakistan in the final in Birmingham. AB de Villiers and his South African 'champions' cricket team will play in the World Championship of Legends final after edging Australia by one run in their semi-final in Birmingham, England on Thursday. The South Africans will take on Pakistan in the final on Saturday, also at Edgbaston, after the latter team advanced when India withdrew from their semi-final, due to political tensions between the nations. While De Villiers didn't score too many runs in the semi-final (6), after topping the run-scoring charts at the tournament, including two big centuries, South Africa posted a competitive 186 for eight in their 20 overs. The big contributors were former Proteas players Morne van Wyk (76 off 35) and Jon-Jon Smuts (57 off 41). Australia were then reduced to 185 in their 20 overs, De Villiers and Wayne Parnell exacting a run-out on the last ball of the innings, leaving the Aussies one run short of tying with the South Africans. The best batters for Australia were Shaun March (25 off17), Chris Lynn (35 off 20), Darcy Short (33 off 29) and Dan Christian (49 off 29). The best SA bowlers were Hardus Viljoen (2/41 in four) and Parnell (2/33 in four). SA 'champions' squad: AB de Villiers (capt), Aaron Phangiso, Chris Morris, Duanne Olivier, Henry Davids, Hardus Viljoen, Hashim Amla, Imran Tahir, Jacques Rudolph, Jon-Jon Smuts, JP Duminy, Morne van Wyk, Richard Levi, Sarel Erwee, Wayne Parnell

Selfless Orlando Pirates' new captain Nkosinathi Sibisi enjoying the fruits of his labour

BAFANA Bafana defenders Nkosinathi Sibisi and Mbekezeli Mbokazi have bee appointed Orlando Pirates captain and deputy ahead of the new season. | BackpagePix Image: BACKPAGEPIX Not in his wildest dreams did Nkosinathi Sibisi imagine it'd get this big. So, after surpassing his expectations, the 29-year-old credits patience and hard work. Sibisi was officially announced as the club captain of Orlando Pirates early this week after a secret voting process by his teammates. He will join an elite class of former captains which includes club legends Lucky Lekgwathi, Happy Jele and Innocent Maela. Sibisi admitted he wasn't expecting such a prominent role at the club, insisting he arrived as someone who only wanted to realise a childhood dream and play for the team. 'It is a great privilege and an honour for me to be the captain of such a big institution, Orlando Pirates,' Sibisi explained. 'As a young boy, I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would be able to play for the club - let alone captain the team. So, it's an honour and a privilege.' Video Player is loading. The KwaZulu-Natal-born defender was one of the last players to be promoted to the first team at former club Golden Arrows, despite leading the reserve team to the title in 2018. And that's not all. His inclusion in the Bafana Bafana set-up, amid limited game-time at Pirates in recent years, was under heavy scrutiny. But such has been his ability to remain patient, support those who were ahead of him, and continue working hard, Sibisi is now enjoying the fruits of his labour for club and country. 'Patience is a virtue,' said Sibisi, who also captained Bafana in the last camp. 'It's not about being on the pitch. How can I put it? I don't know the actual words to say it. 'You can also be playing while still outside. If you are pushing the guys that are on the inside then you are helping, so that's been - how do I call it? - my role. 'I have gone through that in my career, starting by supporting others. But whenever I get my chance, I grab it with both hands.' Sibisi has duly grabbed his opportunity with both hands in the last few months. So much so that he was also voted as thePSL Defender of the Season on Tuesday night. 'It's a great feeling,' Sibisi said of the recognition. 'But like I said, I was up against quality players who had great seasons for their respective clubs. 'We've grown a bond among each other from the national team. I am close with Grant (Kekana), and I speak with Thabo (Moloisane). 'It's an honour, and really nice to be recognised among so many good players. It just shows the hard work that one has put in, we are now reaping the fruits.' 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒/𝟐𝟓 𝐏𝐒𝐋 𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑 🏆 Congratulations to Nkosinathi Sibisi — Betway Defender of the Season ⚫⚪🔴⭐#OrlandoPirates#OnceAlways — Orlando Pirates (@orlandopirates) July 29, 2025 Sibisi knows that his job will be cut out for him more now that he's wearing a lot of caps, and that's why he must be at his best at all times. His first assignment is to ensure that he leads the team to a record-extending fourth MTN8 crown in a row. A feat that's exciting him, instead of scaring. 'When you've won it three times in a row, you don't forget the feeling. You want to do it for the fourth, and fifth time. It's a feeling that you don't want to lose,' Sibisi said. 'It's just for us to defend what's ours, and be in the history books. I think the game from Saturday will be a good test for us coming from pre-season." Pirates will face Polokwane City when they begin their MTN8 defence in Orlando, and Sibisi has described what it had been like working with new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. 'I can't really go much into it,' Sibisi said. 'There are new ideas, which are completely different to how the former coach wanted us to play. 'So, I think it's a matter of adapting to what he wants and trying to apply that to the best of our abilities.'
