
AWS debuts Kiro, its new AI agent-driven IDE platform for ‘better' vibe-coding
AWS has been creating tools to make software deployment easier for developers, and Kiro is in line with the tech giant's broad vision. The new offering from AWS enables developers to go from concept to prototype instantly through conversations about the requirements in terms of designs and specifications.
'I'm excited to announce Kiro, an AI IDE that helps you deliver from concept to production through a simplified developer experience for working with AI agents. Kiro is great at 'vibe coding' but goes way beyond that—Kiro's strength is getting those prototypes into production systems with features such as specs and hooks,' read the blog published by AWS executives Nikhil Swaminathan and Deepak Singh on Monday, July 15.
When a user interacts with Kiro, it creates these specifications and designs which later makes for reliable and robust code over time, Singh said. Kiro is in line with Amazon Connect, AI-based customer service system, and AWS Transform that uses AI agents to modernise applications, he added.
The IDE was launched ahead of AWS Summit 2025 in New York, United States, where it is expected to introduce developments related to AI agents. With Kiro, AWS is looking to make its mark in a rapidly growing market for AI coding tools with the presence of startups such as Windsurf and Cursor.
Kiro is dropping at a time when 'vibe coding' appears to be all the rage. It is the practice of using natural language prompts to generate apps.
Vibe-coding has gained attention as more and more developers have adopted tools that can respond to instructions in natural language with functional code. However, this phenomenon has also made some enterprises unsure of adopting AI coding tools into workflows owing to the lack of accuracy and possibility of hallucinations.
Kiro is reportedly addressing the issue of absence of structure in AI-generated code with something introduced by AWS known as spec coding – a practice that maintains the intuitive nature of AI-assisted development along with the accuracy sought by enterprises.
According to AWS, Kiro, which is said to be great at vibe-coding, goes beyond that with features like specs and hooks. In Kiro, specs are artifacts that come in handy when a developer needs the essentials to get to production. On the other hand, Kiro hooks act like an experienced developer catching things that one misses or complete boilerplate tasks in the background.
Kiro essentially comes with all the features that come with a typical AI code editor such as Model Context Control (MCP) support for connecting specialised tools, rules to guide AI behaviour across projects, agentic chat for ad-hoc coding tasks with file, URL, and Doc's context providers. 'Kiro is built on Code OSS, so you can keep your VS Code settings and Open VSX compatible plugins while working with our IDE. In Indian startups, we often see different teams--data engineering, ML, GenAI--working in silos, even though they rely on the same data. What SageMaker now enables is a unified, simplified interface, allowing these teams to collaborate on a common platform. This not only accelerates experimentation but also reduces costs and complexity by eliminating the need for multiple environments. From an innovation standpoint, the launch of Amazon Nova: Generative Foundational Models is a game-changer. Amazon Bedrock takes care of all that, making it easy for startups to access and leverage a cutting-edge model like DeepSeek-R1 with speed and simplicity. As the narrative has shifted from startups chasing pure growth to solving for profitability, how is AWS enabling Indian startups to raise their efficiency and in turn profitability quotient? Windsurf AI engineer Prem Nair says he ditched Google offer because of payout issues, joined Cognition
There's a lot of drama going on in Silicon Valley around AI talent. Meta has been actively poaching leading AI engineers, while Google also acqui-hired Windsurf's top talent. But the Windsurf deal has been rather controversial so far with many people claiming that it led some people in Windsurf making great money whereas as other people with equity losing out in it. Now a top engineer from Windsurf has publicly announced that he has rejected a Google DeepMind offer and is moving to Cognition AI, after receiving just a fraction of his expected payout from engineer, Prem Nair, revealed that he got the offer from Google but while joining he lost 99 per cent of his expected payout in the process.'I was ultimately given a payout of only 1 per cent of what my shares would have been worth at the time of the deal,' Prem Qu Nair revealed in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He shared that his decision to move to Cognition was both a personal and professional reset after what he described as a high-pressure, zero-leverage situation. 'I was given an offer that would explode same day. I had to forfeit all of my vested shares earned over my 3.5+ years at Windsurf,' he wrote. Nair revealed that he was employee No 2 at Windsurf and played a key role in its AI+code initiatives. He was also among dozens of staffers caught in the wake of the company's rapid ongoing drama around Windsurf comes after the company recently had its dealing with OpenAI and Google. It was once poised for a $3 billion acquisition by OpenAI, but that deal collapsed allegedly due to Microsoft's demands over intellectual property. Google quickly intervened with an 'acqui-hire,' netting Windsurf's founders including CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen, and securing a non-exclusive licence to its core technology and 42 of its top engineers for DeepMind. The company also reportedly signed a $2.4 billion non-exclusive technology licence with the deal has left over 200 employees, including early team members, getting little or no compensation from Nair is adding to the buzz. He has rejected Google and has joined Cognition AI, creators of the Devin coding agent, as the company looks to expand its position in AI-driven software development. 'There's never been a more exciting time and place for it than now at Cognition,' he wrote. 'It reminds me of the energy of the earliest days of Windsurf, where we wrote excessive amounts of code and had excessive amounts of fun.'Notably, Cognition recently acquired what remained of Windsurf, its employees, IP, and development infrastructure, in a follow-up deal after Google scooped parts of it.
