Top Hat Deli in Fort Lauderdale dishes up authentic Jewish classics and family tradition
"It's a silk strung hat. My grandfather brought it over from Germany in the 1930s. You can see his initials are still in there and it was probably made in the 1920s," Wolf explained, showing off the carefully preserved family heirloom.
Wolf's father and grandfather, who were in the food business, have passed. This restaurant stands as an homage to them.
"That's what everything's about. I mean they made me who I am today. Without them I wouldn't be here. You have to honor your heritage and not forget who you are and where you came from. So that's what I did," Wolf explained.
What Wolf has created is a "Be Nice" atmosphere where friendly service and great food go hand in hand. The restaurant even sells mugs and t-shirts with phrases like "Be Nice" and "What Am I, Chopped Liver?" adding to the deli's charm.
On a random Tuesday morning, the restaurant was bustling.
"In about 20 minutes we'll be overflowing," Wolf said. "That's the idea and we want to just keep growing and getting better."
The restaurant has developed a devoted following.
"People are great, walk in, everyone kind of knows your name. Great breakfast place, great lunch place, so yeah, I come here on weekends for a little brunch, a little mimosa, or during the week for a little sandwich or a salad, so it's great," Paul Kogan, who visits up to five times a week, said.
"Great food, great service and it's close to where I work down the street, so we try to come here as much as we can," Todd Finkel, another regular customer, said.
His favorite item?
"The brisket sandwich is excellent," he said.

Meats like corned beef and pastrami are all made on premises. Specialty sandwiches are the standouts, with the Reuben being a must-try menu item.
"I mean you're a Jewish deli. I mean you got to do a Reuben," Wolf insisted when asked about signature dishes.
Also the matzo ball soup.
Top Hat's famous matzo ball soup, known as "Jewish Penicillin," is perfection. It features fresh chicken in broth, homemade noodles and a soft and tender matzo ball.
The Reuben sandwich on grilled rye showcases house-made corned beef, sauerkraut and melty Swiss cheese with Russian dressing and it's served with a side of homemade potato chips.It's tender, juicy and flavorful.
Also, don't miss the yummy classic black and white cookies.
The story and family history continues in unexpected ways, even in the candy selection, which includes licorice chips that were actually named "Chips" for and by Wolf's grandfather.

How Anson Mount Channeled Gene Roddenberry in STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS' Retro-Holodeck Episode — GeekTyrant
The latest season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has given us some wild swings, but last week's episode, 'A Space Adventure Hour,' took fans on one of the more interesting directions of the franchise. It dropped the crew into a stylized 1960s murder mystery on the set of a sci-fi show that looked a whole lot like Star Trek: The Original Series. It was part homage, part parody, and while a lot of fans seemed to enjoy it, I have mixed feelings. Watching Anson Mount step into the role of 'TK Bellows' was a clear nod to Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Mount did his homework and dove deep into Roddenberry's persona to play this character, studying old tapes of Roddenberry to bring an authentic flair to the performance. Director Jonathan Frakes, who helmed the episode, shared with Variety just how much care went into building the character. 'I had the privilege of working with Gene for three or four years before he died. Anson and I started really wanting to lean into Gene, and he asked me to get some tapes which I was able to track down from the Roddenberry Association. 'We were really into him doing Gene, but I think [executive producers] Akiva [Goldsman] and Henry [Alonso Myers] wanted us not to lean in too hard.' Mount was clearly game to take it further, even embracing Roddenberry's distinctive look. Costume designer Bernadette Croft shared that 'Anson was like, 'Let's do a belly, let's really lean into the suede jacket.' [Roddenberry] was this bookish intellectual, but then he kind of turned, like a cut snake if he was in a bad mood or if someone crossed him.' Frakes added that they found the perfect balance in the end, saying: 'We ended up in a wonderful place where Anson created a character who, for better or for worse, anybody who knew him could see Gene. The voice specifically is brilliant, the physicality is so not Pike. Everybody had a ball playing in a different part of their toolbox.' While episode itself may have split opinions, it was a clear love letter to Roddenberry's legacy, and Mount's take on Bellows was a thoughtfully layered performance that fans of classic Trek will absolutely appreciate. Five legends, one page: How Patrick Ryan secured a sports memorabilia masterpiece
Getting an autograph from just one of sports' 'GOATs' is a challenge. Now imagine securing signatures from Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky and Lionel Messi – and to make it more impressive, getting them all to sign the same item. Then imagine doing it in just one year. That's exactly what super collector Patrick Ryan pulled off, creating a one-of-a-kind piece that spans a century of sports greatness. On June 29, 2024, Ryan claimed a nearly 100-year-old autograph album at auction, its prize possession a page signed by Ruth. That single purchase would spark an extraordinary quest – one that would produce one of the most remarkable pieces of sports memorabilia ever assembled. 'When I bought the Babe Ruth signed album page … it just looked kind of empty and it looked lonely,' Ryan told CNN Sports. That's when he realized he had an upcoming opportunity. Brady was scheduled to attend a Sotheby's and Fanatics sports card auction the following week. 'I said, you know what, maybe there's some ways to spruce up this Babe Ruth autograph,' Ryan said. 'It was a ticket to the 1981 NFC Championship game, which he famously attended to watch the Dwight Clark catch,' Ryan said. When Brady got up to leave, Ryan presented the ticket before asking for the favor. 'His eyes definitely lit up when he saw what I was having him sign.' From there, Ryan began plotting the rest. Gretzky's signature came next through mutual friends during the NHL Winter Classic in Chicago. A few months later, Messi signed during a private session with Icons, an autograph company. The final piece was Jordan. Ryan kept details private but said, 'Michael has a lot of respect for … the other guys that are on this piece of paper, and I think that's what motivated him to want to make sure it got done.' Remarkably, Ryan secured all five autographs within a year. When it came time to share the finished 'GOAT' page with the world, Ryan knew he wanted Brady to be the one to reveal it. Brady had been the first living legend to sign the page after Ruth, and his connection to the memorabilia world through his investment in trading card stores made him the perfect choice. The reveal took place at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago. Standing face-to-face with the seven-time Super Bowl champion, Ryan handed him the slabbed album page without explanation. Brady turned it over, took in the sight of all five autographs, and his eyes widened. A smile broke across his face as he leaned in to study it more closely. Ryan says the item is not for sale. 'Most of the autographs were gifted to me, so that would be inappropriate to sell it,' he said. Instead, he plans to eventually place it in a museum. 'I think it will live on in a museum whenever my time here passes … so I'll be able to enjoy it for a long, long time.' In the meantime, he's open to displaying it at events or locations meaningful to the athletes. 'A few museums have reached out. … I'm more than willing to have it on display where these athletes would want it,' Ryan said. Ryan has been a collector since age 7, when he sold baseball cards by the roadside. For him, this piece is more than just ink on paper. 'The fact that I've had so many people reach out … that's been really fun,' he said. 'The whole process has been very rewarding, but I'm always looking for what's next in my journey as a collector.' Still, having five of the greatest team-sport athletes in history on one page – and seeing Brady's stunned reaction to the completed piece – gave Ryan perspective. 'It's such a unique piece. … I'm becoming very focused on making sure other pieces in my collection are directionally in that way,' Ryan said.
