CAPE TOWN - New African champions Pyramids of Egypt will begin the defence of their Champions League crown in the first round next month, but the team they beat in last season's final have been granted a bye into the second round.
South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns lost 3-2 on aggregate to Pyramids in the final last season, but because of a higher ranking are one of only two clubs given passage into the second round of this season's competition.
The other is Al Ahly of Egypt, who have won the Champions League a record 12 times and appeared in five of the last six finals, winning four of them.
A record number of 62 entries for the Champions League means only two clubs do not have to compete in the first round, which will be over two legs on the weekends of September 19-21 and September 26–28.
Two rounds of knockout matches are played to determine the 16 teams who go into the league phase, which will get underway in late November.
In the draw conducted in Dar-es-Salaam on Saturday, Pyramids were pitted against APR FC from Rwanda in the first round, playing the return leg at home in Cairo, and should they progress, will take on the winners of the tie between Ethiopia Medhin or Mlandege from Zanzibar.
There are a record 58 entrants in the African Confederation Cup, spurred on by a $100,000 grant for each participant to help with costs of competing.

Last season, each club in both continental club competitions received a $50,000 grant, which was the first time financial assistance had been offered by the Confederation of African Football.
Competing in African club competitions can be financially draining because of the high travel costs.
In the Confederation Cup draw, which was also conducted on Saturday, past winners Zamalek of Egypt and USM Alger were handed byes into the second round, but Tunisia's Etoile Sahel, another previous victor, start in the first round against Sudan's Al Ahli Madani. REUTERS

Japan school exits hugely popular baseball event over bullying

The two-week 'Koshien' high school tournament is watched by millions on national television each year and has launched the careers of many of Japan's leading players. Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani and San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish both earned their spurs in the tournament played at Koshien Stadium near the western city of Osaka. An outcry over alleged violence earlier this year at the baseball team of Koryo High School in the Hiroshima region prompted calls on social media for their withdrawal. 'We have decided to pull out, and will swiftly conduct an overhaul of our education method,' Masakazu Hori, the principal of the school in western Japan, told reporters. It is reportedly the first time that a school has exited mid-tournament over a scandal related to player violence. Koshien tournament co-organiser, the Japan High School Baseball Federation, on Sunday described Koryo High's decision as 'extremely regrettable' and vowed to continue efforts to 'eradicate violence, bullying and irrational hierarchical relationships'. Acts of violence included shoving him in the chest and slapping him in the face, with the victim then transferred to another school in March following an apology by his assailants, the school said. Koryo High reported the assault to the federation, was given a reprimand in March and did not initially publicise the incident. But emotional social media posts detailing the case went viral earlier this month, triggering an outpouring of anger against the school. Unsubstantiated information then swirled online about other instances of violence allegedly involving Koryo's baseball team. Koryo High principal Hori warned on Sunday that the posts 'include pure speculation not based on facts, and slanders against unrelated students'. 'Some of our students have been vilified and chased after, on their way to and from school,' he said, adding that even a bomb threat had been received. AFP

State acting police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the suspect was detained on Aug 9 to assist investigations. 'The case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act,' he said in a statement on Aug 10. Mr Alwi said police have received 16 reports nationwide, with 12 lodged in Penang and four outside the state. A primary school in Port Dickson apologised earlier in August after mistakenly hanging it upside down ahead of celebrating Malaysia's independence. In April, Malaysian Chinese-language newspaper Sin Chew Daily also had to apologise for publishing an illustration of the flag without a crescent moon. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
