France on Tuesday (April 29) accused Russian military intelligence of being behind cyberattacks against the nation over the last decade, including on President Emmanuel Macron's 2017 campaign and a TV network in 2015, the foreign ministry said.
Russian military intelligence (GRU) 'has been deploying a cyber-offensive modus operandi called APT28 against France for several years. It has targeted around ten French entities since 2021,' Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said in a message on social media platform X.

'In cyberspace, France observes, blocks and fights its adversaries,' he added.

The accusations, labelled at GRU unit APT28, which officials said was located at Rostov-on-Don, are not the first by Western powers, but it is the first time Paris - referring to its own intelligence gathering - has laid the blame at the Russian state.
Accusations of cyberwarfare on Russia
APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, has been linked to dozens of global cyberattacks including the 2016 US election, where it was accused of aiding Donald Trump by leaking Democratic Party emails and those of the campaign of Hillary Clinton.
A week ago, Netherlands' Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) had warned that Russia has ramped up hybrid attacks aimed at undermining Dutch society and its European allies. The agency disclosed that a Russian cyberattack attempted to gain control over an unspecified Dutch public service. 'It was thwarted, but it was the first time,' MIVD Director Peter Reesink had said.
Last month, a report by the New York Times had suggested that over the course of the past two years, Russia had stepped up cyberattacks in Europe and on the United States in a bid to pressure them to curb their support for Ukraine.
According to the report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, these cyberattacks had targeted undersea cables, warehouses and railways.

Jaishankar to step up diplomatic push on visit to France, Belgium

On his third visit to Europe in the past few months, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar left on Sunday (June 8, 2025) for a week-long visit to France and Belgium. He is expected to meet with his counterparts in both governments, and in the European Commission and European Parliament in Brussels. This visit is part of the government's efforts to step up its diplomatic engagement post Operation Sindoor to garner support for India's fight against terrorism. 'The visit of EAM is expected to further deepen India's friendly relations with the European Union, France and Belgium and give renewed momentum to ongoing cooperation in diverse areas,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, announcing the visit from June 8 to 14. In March, Mr. Jaishankar had travelled to the U.K. and Ireland, and in May, he had visited the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany. In France, Mr. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Paris for bilateral talks with French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot, and to Marseille to address the 'Mediterranean Raisina Dialogue', a conference of the Ministry and Observer Research Foundation (ORF). This is significant because Marseille is one of the European ports along with Trieste, Italy, and Piraeus, Greece that are in the running for the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC) route, and although ambitions for the project launched in 2023 have been dimmed due to the Israel-Gaza conflict, New Delhi is keen to keep discussions on it alive. In Brussels, he will hold a 'Strategic Dialogue' with EU High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas, the Ministry said. Mr. Jaishankar is also expected to raise India's request for the repatriation of diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who is under arrest pending a trial for extradition to India to face charges of fraud and embezzlement. Mr. Jaishankar will end his tour in time for the G-7 summit in Canada, although it is unclear whether he will attend. He is also scheduled to travel to Washington for the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting in early July and could accompany PM Modi to the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 5-6. Rima Hassan: French-Palestinian MP On Gaza-Bound Ship Intercepted By Israel

European Parliamentarian Rima Hassan and climate activist Greta Thunberg were among the 12-member crew aboard the Gaza-bound humanitarian ship "kidnapped" by Israeli commandos in international waters early Monday. The vessel Madleen, a British-flagged yacht operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), was reportedly stopped around 2 am. Ms Hassan shared a photo from the yacht showing people in life jackets, seated with their hands raised as Israeli forces boarded the ship. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg Thunberg said in a video recorded before the raid that she and others had been " kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces." The Freedom Flotilla was carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, aiming to challenge Israel's over 12-week-long naval blockade on the strip. Who Is Rima Hassan? Rima Hassan is a European Parliamentarian, elected on the France Insoumise (LFI) ticket in the 2024 June elections. She is the first French-Palestinian MEP in history. She is a 32-year-old legal scholar and human rights activist. She serves as a member of the European Parliament 's Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights, and the Delegation for Relations with Palestine. Born in a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria in 1992, Ms Hassan grew up without official nationality until she became a French citizen in 2010 at age 18. She quickly rose to prominence as a vocal defender of Palestinian rights. She has accused Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza, referring to it as a "fascist colonial entity" and a "nameless monstrosity" that "lies every day." Often seen wearing a keffiyeh (Palestinian scarf), Ms Hassan gained support from pro-Palestinian groups. Since her election, she has been a leading voice in calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and has become one of the most controversial figures in French politics. On February 27, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced she would be investigated for " terrorist apologism" due to her statements on Israel. Some members of France's centrist and far-right camps even called for stripping her of French citizenship, though these efforts were later walked back as legally baseless. Rima Hassan is often labelled "Lady Gaza", a nickname given by a comedian on public radio, who portrayed her as obsessively focused on Palestine.

Ukrainian Losses Mount As Zarya Falls To Russia; Zelensky Says 'Situation Is Difficult'

Russian forces have reportedly taken full control of Zarya settlement in Donetsk, raising the national flag after what Moscow called a meek Ukrainian surrender. Backed by heavy artillery and airstrikes, the Yug battlegroup inflicted massive casualties, with Russia's Defense Ministry claiming over 1,200 Ukrainian troops were eliminated. Additional targets, including electronic warfare stations and ammunition depots, were destroyed during the offensive. Russia's Tsentr battlegroup also pushed west into the Dnipropetrovsk region, intensifying its broader campaign across eastern Ukraine.#ukrainewar #RussiaUkraineConflict #EasternUkraine #donetsk #Zarya Read More
