Police Wrapping Up Case Of Iranians Who Robbed 'Hypnotised' Tourists In George Town
Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said all five, aged between 19 and 35, have finished their police remand and are currently being remanded by the Immigration Department (JIM) until Aug 15.
"Police are still conducting investigations from various angles including the possibility of their involvement in similar cases in other places (other states) however, there have been no findings so far.
"Investigations so far show that they are involved in three cases reported in the George Town area and we are completing the investigation papers before it is sent to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office for further action," he said when contacted by Bernama today.
He said police were also still waiting for a response from JIM to confirm the authenticity of the passports of the five Iranians, including a married couple, and records of their entry and exit in the country.
Mohd Alwi said his party was investigating the cases under Section 379 of the Penal Code (for theft) and Section 380 the same act in addition to Section 6 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Last Saturday, police arrested the three men and two women at Plaza Gurney during an Ops Tourist operation to assist in the investigation into the theft of money from foreign tourists who were believed to have been swindled through trickery around the city centre, where the suspects are believed to possess expertise to swindle with sweet-talking skills to carry out the crime such as casting victims under a spell or a charm (pukau) before stealing their money.
Police received three reports of cash theft involving tourists in a hypnosis scam (pukau) that occurred in the Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang areas involving victims who were Taiwanese, Dutch and Syrian nationals, all aged between 29 and 52, in incidents from July 30 to Aug 1.

Families urge Thailand to transfer Malaysian burn victims
BANGKOK: The families of two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire here last week have requested that Thai authorities allow them to be transferred to Malaysia as soon as they are medically fit. The two, identified as Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and boyfriend Ong Yik Leong, 26, were attacked by a jobless man who allegedly splashed thinner before setting them on fire near a shopping mall at Ratchadamri Road on Thursday night. Gan Kin In, 80, said his daughter had arrived in Bangkok the night before for a holiday. 'I felt uneasy when Xiao Zhen told me a week ago that she planned to go to Thailand for a holiday with her boyfriend. 'There have been too many incidents happening there this year. I did not feel it was the right time to go but Xiao Zhen convinced me that it was safe,' he told Bernama when met at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital on Saturday. Kin In said both families asked for a medical report on the victims' condition during a briefing with Thai authorities and hospital medical staff members. He said the families hoped that the victims could be sent back to Malaysia as soon as possible due to accommodation constraints here. 'We hope a medical report can be provided so that we can consult our own doctors in Malaysia on their current condition,' he said. Kin In said Xiao Zhen, who was admitted to the Burn Unit, suffered 36% second-degree burns to her face, chest and arm. 'She is conscious, in a stable condition and communicates by writing. The doctor informed us she might need about a month to recover,' he said. Yik Leong, who was treated in intensive care at the Police General Hospital, is also reported to be in a stable condition.

Viral video of upside-down flag from last year, police say
KUALA LUMPUR: A viral video purportedly showing the Malaysian flag flown upside down at a company's premises in Bandar Pinggiran Subang, Shah Alam, has been confirmed to be from an incident that occurred last year. Sungai Buloh Police chief Supt Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said a review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the premises over the past few days showed the Malaysian flag was flown correctly, contrary to what was depicted in the viral video. "The 2024 incident occurred when a newly purchased Malaysian flag was being put up, but the mistake was corrected once it was noticed. However, the video was reshared this year by a TikTok user. "Police received a report on Saturday (Aug 9) from the company's project manager, who denied the allegations in the social media posting," he said in a statement on Sunday. - Bernama
