A PHARMACIST has issued a warning about the world's most used painkiller paracetamol, warning it could be "quietly harming" your liver.
The pill is safe to take for headaches, muscle pain and fever, as long as you're sticking to recommended amounts.

But "taking too much – even slightly exceeding the recommended dose – can be extremely dangerous for your liver", warned Dipa Kamdar, a senior lecturer in pharmacy practice at Kingston University.
It's easy to assume that alcohol is the main culprit of liver damage.
"In fact, many everyday habits, often overlooked, can slowly cause damage that may eventually lead to serious conditions such as cirrhosis - permanent scarring of the liver - or liver failure," the pharmacist wrote in The Conversation.
This can include eating foods high in saturated fat or sugar, as well as smoking or not exercising enough - as well as taking too much paracetamol.

"Despite its remarkable resilience – and even its ability to regenerate – the liver is not indestructible," Dipa said.
"One of the challenges with liver disease is that it can be a silent threat. In its early stages, it may cause only vague symptoms like constant fatigue or nausea.
"As damage progresses, more obvious signs may emerge. One of the most recognisable is jaundice, where the skin and the whites of the eyes turn yellow."
Liver disease kills more than 11,000 people in the UK each year, according to The British Liver Trust.

That amounts to more than 31 deaths a day, the charity said.
It warned that liver disease deaths in the UK have quadrupled in the last 50 years, at the same time as deaths from other major diseases have fallen.

Dipa explained paracetamol could be dangerous to the liver due to the way the organ processes the painkiller.
As it breaks down the drug, it produces a toxic by-product called NAPQI.

Normally, the body neutralises this by producing a protective substance known as glutathione.
But in high doses, the liver can become overwhelmed, potentially leading to potentially life-threatening damage.
"In an overdose, glutathione stores become depleted, allowing NAPQI to accumulate and attack liver cells," Dipa warned.
"This can result in acute liver failure, which can be fatal.

"Even small overdoses, or combining paracetamol with alcohol, can increase the risk of serious harm," the pharmacist went on.
"Always stick to the recommended dose and speak to a doctor if you find yourself needing pain relief regularly."

Studies have looked into the potential dangers of taking paracetamol.

Research published in 2013 showed a link between liver failure and low doses of paracetamol.
As Andrew Moore, an honorary senior research fellow at the University of Oxford, wrote in The Conversation: "Paracetamol is known to cause liver failure in overdose, but it also causes liver failure in people taking standard doses for pain relief.
"The risk is only about one in a million, but it is a risk."
Other habits damaging your liver
Dipa shared other habits that may be silently damaging your liver.

Drinking too much alcohol is the obvious one.
When you drink, your liver works to break down the alcohol and clear it from your system, but having too much of it at once overwhelms this process and causes toxic by products to build up and damage liver cells.
This can cause fat to accumulate in the liver and continued drinking can progress it to alcoholic hepatitis and then cirrhosis.
Experts recommend sticking to no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, and including alcohol-free days to give your liver time to recover.

It's also worth taking a look at your diet to protect your liver, as foods high in saturated fat - like red meat, fried foods and processed snacks - can raise cholesterol levels and contribute to liver fat accumulation.
Symptoms of liver disease
Most types of liver disease do not cause any symptoms in the early stages.
Once you start to get symptoms of liver disease, your liver is already damaged and scarred. This is known as cirrhosis.
Symptoms of cirrhosis include: Feeling very tired and weak all the time
Loss of appetite – which may lead to weight loss
Loss of sex drive (libido)
Yellow skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
Itchy skin
Feeling or being sick

Sugary foods and drinks are also a major risk factor, the pharmacist said.
Not exercising enough can contribute to weight gain, which ups the risk of liver disease.
But exercising can benefit your liver even in you don't lose weight, Dipa noted.

Finally, the chemicals from cigarette smoke can make your liver work harder and contribute to cirrhosis.
The British Liver Trust says 90 per cent of liver disease cases can be prevented by lifestyle changes.
"You can protect [your liver] by drinking alcohol in moderation, quitting smoking, taking medications responsibly, eating a balanced diet, staying active and keeping hydrated," Dipa said.

Heart health is a huge issue across the UK. According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), around 7.6 million Brits are thought to be living with cardiovascular disease. This includes conditions like coronary heart disease, stroke, and heart failure. Cardiovascular disease is also a major contributor to fatalities in the UK, accounting for one in four premature deaths in the UK. The same is true worldwide, with the disease linked to around a quarter of all deaths. Now, researchers from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago have created a simple way to help people understand more about their potential risk. This involved gathering information needed to calculate a person's 'heart age'. This is not necessarily the same as their chronological age. People with issues such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and obesity are more likely to have a higher heart age, for example. Sadiya Khan, the Magerstadt Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology and the study's senior author, said: 'We hope this tool helps doctors and patients discuss risk for heart disease more effectively so we can better inform what therapies can prevent heart attacks, stroke, or heart failure events from ever happening.' After creating the calculator, the team trialled it on more than 14,000 US adults between the ages of 30 to 79, who had participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2011 and 2020. At the time of the survey they did not have a cardiovascular disease diagnosis. But following analysis, researchers found that on average, women had a heart age of 55.4 and a chronological age of 51.3, while men had a heart age of 56.7 and a chronological age of 49.7. Prof Khan continued: 'Many people who should be on medicine to lower their risk for heart attack, stroke or heart failure are not on these medications. We hope this new heart age calculator will help support discussions about prevention and ultimately improve health for all people. 'The important thing is that we have very good options available in our toolbox to help slow that aging down if we can identify it. This may be even more important in younger people who don't often think about their risk for heart disease.' To calculate your heart age use the online tool here. According to a bedding expert, here are the mistakes to avoid when it comes to washing your bed sheets to ensure long-lasting linen and to keep your home clean Many Brits may be washing their sheets completely wrong – and reducing the bedding 's lifespan, according to bedding experts. Your bed may not be as clean as you think. A mere 28 per cent of Brits change their sheets once a week, while 35 per cent wash them once every two weeks, according to YouGov research. However, people are being urged to clean their bedding on a weekly basis as dust mites, dead skin and sweat build up quickly, which can turn your bed into a potential health hazard as you sleep. James Pilling, bedding expert and interior designer from My Furniture, explains why washing your bedding weekly is important. He says: "You might not realise it, but many people are washing their sheets all wrong. One of the biggest mistakes is not washing them often enough. "We spend roughly eight hours a night in bed, so over a week, that's a lot of time lying on the same fabric. If you wouldn't wear the same clothes for seven days straight, the same principle applies to your bedding." He adds: "The golden rule is to wash your bedding weekly and avoid using a tumble dryer, which could damage the fabric." But what other washing faux pas might you be making? James reveals four other mistakes to avoid in order to keep your sheets in optimal condition. Washing with hot water James explains: "Hot washes are one of the quickest ways to ruin bed linen. High temperatures break down cotton or silk fibres, leaving them brittle." He continues: "In fact, the fluff you see in the lint trap is actually part of your bedding. An eco cycle with warm water is far gentler on the fabric, as well as more eco-friendly." Adding clothing and bedding in the same wash James says: "Never wash your sheets with clothes that have zips, buttons or other fastenings as they can snag or tear the fabric. Bedding should be washed in a separate load." Using harsh cleaning chemicals James explains that the cleaning products you use make a big difference. He says: "Sheets usually need freshening up from sweat and skin cells. But too many harsh chemicals can do more harm than good, so stick to plant-based detergents and avoid fabric softener altogether. He adds: "For an even gentler option, wash your sheets with a cup of borax or sodium bicarbonate instead, as it's better for both your bedding and your washing machine." Using radiators to dry bedding James warns: "Heat can seriously damage the fabric of your bedding. The best way to dry sheets is outside in the fresh air. This includes winter. As long as it's not raining, you can usually get them dry, and your linen will remain intact."

There were 73 cases of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease that causes crippling joint pain, between January and June 2025 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland - the highest number ever recorded. The first cases of the oropouche have also been reported in the UK, which were all linked to travel from Brazil. The oropouche virus, dubbed 'sloth fever', circulates between primates, sloths, and birds in the wild - before it is occasionally passed to humans by midges and mosquitoes. It is primarily found in the Amazon basin in South America, but in recent years has started spreading more widely around the Americas. Health officials have since urged people to take precautions against insect bites while on holiday, as cases of both infections surge. Chikungunya spreads through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus species. The virus is rarely deadly, but can cause serious disease spread by the in the very young, older people and those with other underlying illnesses. Typical symptoms include: Excruciating joint pain, which can leave victims hunched or folded over in agony High fever Headache Muscle aches Nausea Fatigue Red, bumpy rash Swelling in the joints, particularly the hands and feet In severe cases, the joint pain can mimic arthritis, leaving sufferers temporarily disabled for months or even years. Oropouche virus The illness mainly occurs in Africa and Asia, specifically southern Asia, although cases have been reported in Europe and parts of North America. However, this year there have been outbreaks in the Americas and Asia, with surges in China and the Indian Ocean islands of Reunion, Mayotte and Mauritius. The majority of UK cases reported this year were linked to travel to Sri Lanka, India and Mauritius. All cases were reported in England, primarily in London. There is currently no risk of onward transmission of chikungunya, as the two species of mosquito that transmit the disease are not established in the UK, UKHSA said. At least 12 other cities in the southern Guangdong province have also reported infections. Hong Kong and Taiwan have also reported cases. Dr Philip Veal, consultant in public health at UKHSA, said: "Chikungunya can be a nasty disease and we're seeing a worrying increase in cases among travellers returning to the UK. "While this mosquito-borne infection is rarely fatal, it can cause severe joint and muscle pain, headaches, sensitivity to light and skin rashes. "Thankfully, symptoms usually improve within a few weeks, but joint pain may last for months or longer." He added: "It is essential to take precautions against mosquito bites when travelling. "Simple steps, such as using insect repellent, covering up your skin and sleeping under insecticide-treated bed nets can greatly reduce the risk." Two chikungunya vaccines are approved for use in the UK and are available to buy after an assessment at a private travel clinic. Meanwhile, three cases of oropouche virus have been detected by UKHSA. How concerning is this outbreak in China? Though tactics adopted by authorities in China hark back to lockdown measures five years ago, chikungunya "does not pose the same level of pandemic threat as a virus like Covid-19", according to Prof Tom Solomon, director of The Pandemic Institute in Liverpool. Dr César López-Camacho, from the Jenner Institute at the University of Oxford, added: 'It is extremely unlikely to cause a pandemic in the traditional sense, as chikungunya does not spread from person to person. "However, it can cause large regional outbreaks, especially when introduced to mosquito-rich, low-immunity settings, like what we are probably seeing in China." The risk to the UK from this outbreak is "currently low" as Aedes mosquitoes, which tend to carry the virus, aren't widespread here. "But we do need to watch closely, as climate change and global travel are expanding the range of these mosquitoes, and with it, the viruses they carry," Dr López-Camacho warned. 'It is also important that genetic sequencing of the virus in this outbreak is carried out. "In past outbreaks, mutations have helped chikungunya adapt to new mosquito species. "If the virus has changed, we need to ensure current vaccines still offer protection." Brits travelling to China amidst the outbreak should "be cautious", the disease expert said. He continued: "The US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a Level 2 travel alert, recommending travellers use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, and stay in screened or air-conditioned accommodation. "Travellers returning from affected areas who develop fever and joint pain should seek medical attention and mention their recent travel." People travelling to high-risk areas where outbreaks of the virus often occur can get vaccinated against chikungunya at a travel clinic. But Prof Solomon noted: "There have been reports of serious side effects in people over the age of 65. "As such, the vaccine is currently recommended for travellers under 65 visiting high-risk areas." The flu-like illness can cause a fever, headaches, joint pain, muscle pain, chills, nausea and vomiting. Officials urged anyone who becomes unwell with these symptoms after travel to affected areas, including parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean, to seek urgent medical advice. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), before late 2023, oropouche virus was mostly reported near the Amazon rainforest area. However, in 2024, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Guyana, Peru and the Dominican Republic reported locally transmitted cases of the disease. The UKHSA report also shows a rise in travel-associated cholera cases in the UK, with eight cases in the first half of the year compared to just one in 2024. Most cases were linked with travel to India and Ethiopia. There was also a 67 per cent decrease in the number of dengue cases reported in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from January to June.
