VP election: Uphill task for opposition in contest, bloc may field 'ideological' face
Ahead of discussions on picking a candidate, it is felt that since winnability is an uphill task due to opposition's weaker numerical strength in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, INDIA bloc should use the vice-president (VP) contest to send out an unambiguous signal to its core constituencies of marginalised sections, including backwards and minorities, farmers, and intellectuals and the civil society.
INDIA bloc is scheduled to meet Thursday (Aug 7), where Bihar assembly election is likely to be an issue as also the special intensive revision of the state's electoral rolls.
The meeting, sources said, may also initiate a preliminary discussion on the likely candidate for the VP polls.
Unity on consensus candidate will be challenge for the opposition camp
At the meet, Rahul Gandhi may give a presentation on
Congress
's "research" on voters' lists which he has said proves beyond doubt that the rolls are being tampered with to help BJP.
The VP election has come prematurely after the controversial resignation by Jagdeep Dhankhar last month following an alleged confrontation with the govt over his decision to accept the notices to remove Justices Shekhar Yadav and Yashwant Varma.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Saturday alleged that Dhankhar was biased against the opposition, but he took one independent decision and it led to his downfall, as he accused the Modi govt of pressuring constitutional authorities.
The opposition has been accusing the governing BJP of attacking constitutional values, secularism, fair elections, marginalised sections, besides weakening the economy and endangering the future of the youth.
Some feel that an ideal VP candidate from the opposition camp should be able to represent these issues and send out a strong message.
Such a move by the opposition, insiders argue, will hammer home the ideological distinction between BJP and the opposition parties, and help rally the base as the latter looks to build upon its gains in the 2024 LS polls.
However, ensuring unity with a consensus candidate will also be a challenge for the opposition camp, where many partners compete against each other and are antagonistic.
In the first vice presidential election held after BJP assumed office in 2014, Congress and opposition had fielded Mahatma Gandhi's grandson and known intellectual Gopal Krishna Gandhi to take on BJP's M Venkaiah Naidu in 2017. However, when the opposition witnessed fissures in its ranks in 2022, there was a paucity of candidates and Congress was forced to field a party leader in Margaret Alva to take on BJP candidate Dhankhar.

Importantly, it gives parents representation in fee regulation committees — they will no longer be silent spectators,' he said. However, leader of the opposition Atishi described the bill as a 'legal cover' for increasing school fees. 'We've proposed amendments based on parent feedback. These will be put to vote tomorrow,' she said. AAP MLA Prem Chauhan (Deoli) echoed the criticism, pointing out that the bill empowers school committees to fix fee structures without mandating financial audits. 'Even filing a complaint requires support from 15% of parents, which is an unfair hurdle. Parents won't have majority representation in fee committees. Complaints will get stuck in the process. We demand the bill be referred to a select committee,' he said. AAP members also called for an immediate freeze on school fee hikes. Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta said proposed amendments from all members would be presented on Wednesday, followed by voting. Other assembly issues In addition to the fee bill, several other local concerns were raised. Atishi flagged the demolition of slums across the capital, accusing the BJP of misleading residents with false promises. Deputy speaker Mohan Singh Bisht said a hospital building in Shiv Vihar, Mustafabad, damaged during the riots, remains in disrepair. 'A new hospital must be built. The area has a population of over 5 lakh,' he said. Health minister assured that the matter would be addressed. Other MLAs raised issues ranging from waterlogging and drainage problems in Kirari to community dog management and delays in pension disbursement for DTC employees. A scheduled discussion on CAG reports was postponed to Wednesday.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that the BJP and the Central government were responsible for the alleged maltreatment of Bengali migrants in other states and a flood-situation in southern districts of the state. Addressing a gathering during a programme at Kamarpukur Ramakrishna Mission and Math, Banerjee said, 'Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi, Rabindranath Tagore, Bankim Chandra and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose all spoke Bengali. All their writings or creations are in the Bengali language.' Referring to flood-like situation in the state, Banerjee said, 'Due to the release of water from DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation), Maithon, Panchet and other dams, both North and South Bengal suffer from floods, which cause immense hardship to our people and drain the state's treasury. This time, DVC released 51,000 lakh cubic metres of water. Why hasn't dredging been done in the last 20 years? We will not tolerate this injustice.' 'After the 2026 Assembly elections, we plan to stop this forced water release by DVC. We have to create some of our own dams to counter this and manage the floods. If repeated appeals go unheard, we will have to act,' the CM said. She added, 'Bengal's funds have been blocked by the Centre, and we have had to do everything on our own. From roads to housing — we have done it all ourselves.' Later, Banerjee also visited a relief camp in Arambagh and distributed food to the flood-affected people. On a Cooch Behar resident receiving an NRC notice, the Chief Minister said, 'How is the Assam government issuing such notices? Bengali workers are being killed in Maharashtra. 'SIR brainchild of BJP-led Centre' The CM on Tuesday alleged that the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar was the brainchild of the BJP-led central government with the connivance of the Election Commission. 'This (SIR) has been planned by the Centre, keeping the Election Commission with it. We do not agree with it,' she said, contending that it is not possible for everyone to preserve parents' birth certificates for the exercise. The chief minister said she will not accept any attempt to introduce the SIR in West Bengal, where assembly polls are due in 2026. 'People practicing all religions will suffer if the special intensive revision is introduced in the state,' Banerjee claimed. She also alleged that attempts were underway to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the name of SIR. After taking stock of the flood situation in Ghatal, Banerjee said funds will be disbursed to farmers who suffered losses, from the state's crop insurance scheme. Banerjee said her government has been providing funds for the 100-day job guarantee scheme, housing for the poor and rural roads. Meanwhile, during a virtual meeting with district-level party leaders, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday raised the issue of the Delhi Police letter where Bengali was termed as 'Bangladeshi'. He slammed the BJP and party leader Amit Malviya for allegedly insulting Bengali. 'This is why we call them Bangla virodhi and zamindars. How dare they call the Bangla language Bangladeshi? Not a single MLA of BJP is protesting this insult on Bengal and Bengalis,' he said.
