Perplexity AI Wants To Become Your Default Web Browser On Smartphones, Will It Beat Chrome?
Perplexity is ready to go after Google's Chrome and wants to get a pie of the smartphone browser market with a new plan.
Perplexity AI has made its mark thanks to the deal with Airtel thanks to the free AI Pro offer available for its prepaid and Wi-Fi users in India. Now, the company is looking to take on Google and Apple in a big way – by making you switch from Chrome or Safari to its Comet browser.
Yes, according to Reuters, Perplexity AI is looking to partner with phone brands to bring the Comet browser to more users or even have it pre-loaded on smartphones like Google offers its products.
More Battle For The Giants
It looks like Perplexity is not fazed about its battle with giants like Google and Apple who have built their own ecosystem and user base by bundling their apps on devices and getting people hooked to these platforms.
Comet is not a household name by any means, but the Airtel deal gives Perplexity more airtime and people will slowly start gaining interest in its web browser that goes beyond the regular stuff.
The company has developed an AI-centric browser that can handle your tasks and even make you a multi-tasking champ with its ability to manage work with prompts. More importantly, reports claim that Apple executives have considered buying Perplexity AI to fuel their own ambitions and kickstart their stuttering AI journey.
Comet is still limited to the higher-end Perplexity plan, and even then you have to be on the waitlist to join the new browser. Looking at the pace at which Perplexity is getting its deals done, we'll probably see Comet become available on phones and app stores in the next few months.
The Perplexity AI free offer is applicable for all Airtel mobile, broadband and other services from the operator in the country. Perplexity Pro is a premium AI tier like ChatGPT Plus and Gemini AI Pro, offering a host of features and access to AI models like Claude and others.
Airtel users can access Perplexity Pro AI subscription for one year without any extra charges and it comes bundled with their mobile or broadband plan. You just need to claim the offer available through its app and enjoy the AI service and all its features.

ED summons Meta, Google on July 28 for ads on betting sites
Representational Image NEW DELHI: Meta and Google, being investigated by ED for hosting advertisements on their platforms for illegal betting sites, have been given a fresh date of July 28 to appear before the probe agency, after they sought adjournment of the summons issued for Monday. Sources said the tech companies sought more time to collect documents sought by the agency in their ongoing probe against some illegal betting sites operating in India. These betting sites have collected hundreds of crores from Indian citizens by engaging in illegal activity. ED in a statement in Jan this year had said that scammers have been posting ads on platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, offering betting options, part-time jobs, online shopping and jobs, among others. Victims register through a link provided to them and pay a small initial amount, like Rs 100. The scammers then ask for more deposits, promising higher payouts. "However, when victims attempt to withdraw their earnings, they are told to complete more tasks and pay additional fees. This cycle continues until victims deposit large sums, often in lakhs, only to realise they have been scammed." In online shopping fraud, scammers attract people with "offers of very cheap products found via Google or social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo Victims receive a purchase link on WhatsApp, register, and pay for the item. The fraudsters then demand additional payments, citing reasons such as customs duties and delivery charges. In the end, the victim loses their money and never receives the purchased item. " Earlier, ED had attached assets worth Rs 337 crore in a crackdown against illegal betting related to Lok Sabha results of 2024 and unauthorised broadcast of IPL cricket matches. "The attached assets included demat account holdings, lands, flats and commercial warehouses located at Ajmer (Rajasthan), Kutch (Gujarat), Daman, Thane and Mumbai (Maharashtra) worth Rs 220 crore of the online betting app Fairplay and its promoters," the agency had said. This was in addition to assets worth Rs 117 crore attached earlier. The funds laundered through shell companies have been siphoned off to overseas shell entities based out of Hong Kong SAR, China and Dubai. "More than 400 bank accounts of shell entities were found to be used for these purposes, which are under examination along with trailing/utilisation of funds collected from the public by Fairplay," ED had said.

Starting April 1, India abolished the 6 per cent equalisation levy on online advertising services provided by non-resident entities, also known as Google tax. Indian-Origin CEO Facing Backlash For Ditching Startup To Join Google: "Generational Villain"
Days after Google hired Windsurf's Varun Mohan, a backlash has ensued with social media users slamming the Indian-origin CEO for leaving the company. Mr Mohan, alongside co-founder Douglas Chen, joined Google's artificial intelligence (AI) arm DeepMind, following a high-stakes corporate tug-of-war that reportedly saw OpenAI in advanced talks to acquire Windsurf just last month. His abrupt exit, however, left Windsurf in turmoil. The startup managed to secure a last-minute acquisition by another AI firm, Cognition, after a weekend of frantic negotiations. The company's new CEO, Jeff Wang, described the rescue as "crazy". Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out Mohan, saying he would not work with him again. "Windsurf and others are really bad examples of founders leaving their teams behind and not even sharing the proceeds," Mr Khosla wrote. So true. Windsurf and others are really bad examples of founders leaving their teams behind and not even sharing the proceeds with their team. I definitely would not work with their founders next time. — Vinod Khosla (@vkhosla) July 19, 2025 Meanwhile, CEO of Cognition, Scott Wu, added: "There's an unspoken covenant that as a founder, you go down with the ship. For better or worse, it's changed a bit over the last year and I think it's disappointing, to be honest." 'There's an unspoken covenant that as a founder, you go down with the ship. This show is everything and more on: - What really happened behind the scenes -… — Harry Stebbings (@HarryStebbings) July 18, 2025 "Varun Mohan is a generational villain at this point, crazy saga. Also, no word from him," said one user while another added: "The original Windsurf leadership team jumping ships to join Google with cherry-picked employees and leaving most of the team behind is unconscionable. Deeply unethical." Varun Mohan is a generational villain at this point.. crazy saga. Also no word from him. — Chandra (@NCResq) July 19, 2025 Also Read | Here's How Much Andy Byron's Wife Could Get In Divorce After Coldplay Kiss Cam Scandal While the backlash was intense, Ycombinator CEO Garry Tan came to Mr Mohan's rescue, stating he did not deserve to be dragged into the internet beef. "Varun Mohan and the team at Windsurf built something great," wrote Mr Tan, adding: "He and his team don't deserve to be dragged and I think in the long term their decision to sell will be vindicated. It can be irresistible to fan the flames on Internet beef but in this case everyone should stand down given what really happened." Mr Mohan, who has Indian roots, was raised in Sunnyvale, California, by parents who migrated from India. He attended The Harker School in San Jose before moving on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned both a Bachelor's and Master of Engineering degree in Computer Science. He co-founded Windsurf in June 2021, with the startup gaining prominence for developing AI tools that streamline software development workflows. Under his leadership, Windsurf quickly became one of Silicon Valley's most promising names in AI infrastructure.
