The law aims to keep Japan at the forefront of the technology, considers the wider impact of AI on society and the economy, and gives the government new powers to investigate firms in the AI industry. The bill passed the House of Councillors this week with backing from the governing coalition and most major opposition parties, signaling broad support for the move. It had already passed the House of Representatives with similar support in April, guaranteeing its passage into official law. One of its provisions is the formation of a 'strategic headquarters' that includes the prime minister and the entire Cabinet to create a basic plan to advance AI R&D along with its potential applications. Local media reports have focused more on how the government will deal with risks associated with widespread AI use rather than the R&D aspects. This reflects the growing awareness of AI in the mainstream, as more members of the general public have personal experience with generative AI tools. One concern is that AI may 'facilitate crimes, leak personal information, and violate copyrights.' False or incorrect information generated by AI tools could also have negative impacts. Under the new law, the government may disclose the names of companies it considers 'malicious' if an AI-related crime is committed. If a reported incident is serious enough, the government can launch official investigations into companies or groups involved. Based on its findings from these potential investigations, it may instruct or advise business operators related to the matter, release information to the public, and take 'other necessary actions.' AI has been on the Japanese government's radar for some time. A decade ago, it was grouped in a list of four emerging technologies deserving attention as one of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's economic 'arrows.' Together with the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and Big Data, AI formed a key part of Abe's 'Abenomics' national revitalization plans. Back then, any mention of AI was immediately connected to robotics and the concept of humanoid robots working in the service industry. That's still prominent in Japan, though nowadays, the focus is more on generative AI and its downstream issues, such as the veracity of the information it provides and potential harms to end-users and creators. In 2025, technological and geopolitical concerns have shifted and the revival Abenomics promised hasn't quite materialized. But its legacy lives on in current policies, and Japan has always seen awareness of technological developments as part of its national prestige. Even if this doesn't necessarily involve Japan remaining at the bleeding edge of actual development, the government is always keen to stay informed of any new implications. Several large corporations in Japan have begun integrating generative AI into their office workflows, consumer applications, and industrial processes. These include Panasonic (NASDAQ: PCRFF), Japan Airlines (NASDAQ: JPNRF), Asahi Breweries, Sumitomo Chemical (NASDAQ: SOMMF), Suntory (NASDAQ: STBFF), Seven-Eleven, and Asahi Steel. Large financial institutions like MUFG Bank (NASDAQ: MUFG), SMBC Group, and Mizuho (NASDAQ: MZHOF) have also claimed to have begun using generative AI in office and financial processes. Internationally, significant AI advancements are seen as opaque or difficult to understand, and there's a growing suspicion that companies and governments will keep their true capabilities secret, potentially to use against adversary countries and even members of the public. As a result, there's a growing desire for more transparency in the industry and disclosure of what data is being used, and how. Data security and protection of private information have been gaining attention for several years now, but this is now joined with an appetite for data veracity. Information systems of the future will need built-in protections for these, not just legislation if data-driven economies and societies are to retain public trust. China robotaxis, Indian pharma among hedge fund top picks at Sohn Hong Kong
HONG KONG, June 2 (Reuters) - Hedge funds revealed their top investment ideas, ranging from Chinese self-driving taxis, an Indian drug retailer, to a Korean nuclear plant builder, at the annual Sohn investment conference in Hong Kong. This year's picks are geographically more diverse compared to last year, suggesting that investors are actively seeking to spread their exposure to counter tariff uncertainties and market volatility. San Francisco-based Flight Deck Capital sees upside potential in Chinese search engine giant Baidu ( opens new tab, betting on its fast-growing auto-driving business. Similar to Google's self-driving unit Waymo, Baidu's Apollo Go "is the only robo-taxi player in China that's not dependent on the capital markets to scale," Flight Deck founder and managing partner Jay Kahn said at the conference on Friday. He expects China's taxi and ride-share industry to grow to around $237 billion by 2034, with Apollo taking a 15% market share. But that segment, together with Baidu's cloud business, is currently given zero valuation by the market, he said. Notably, investor optimism on Chinese firms going overseas has not been derailed by the escalating U.S.-China trade war. Hong Kong's Apeiron Capital pitched Chinese ride-hailing company DiDi Global , citing its improving margin at home and its quick market share building in Latin America. Save hundreds on Galaxy S24 or latest Samsung tablet in surprise EE summer sale
EE's sale slashes prices on some of the latest and greatest tech Over the past couple of years EE has expanded its offering, from being a mobile phone network, to now running a complete tech store. There's currently a summer sale at EE, offering discounts on a full range of devices – not just mobile phones. That includes headphones, soundbars, tablets and even TVs discounted – with the advantage of being able to pay monthly, by adding it to your EE bill with no fees or interest. But some of the biggest savings are on connected devices, where you'll get a get an EE plan along with the device. The first that caught my eye was the Samsung Galaxy S24, where EE has slashed monthly prices - £10 off many of the Unlimited tariffs, or £6 a month on its cheapest plan. I'd take the Unlimited Essentials, meaning you get the Galaxy S24 for £40 a month with unlimited data, minutes and texts. All of these will save hundreds over the 24-months of the contract, with EE breaking down the price rises over the duration of the contract too. The Samsung Galaxy S24 is a year old now, but thanks to Samsung's 7-year software update promise, shoppers are guaranteed support up to 2031. There's also not a lot of difference between the Galaxy S24 and the new Galaxy S25, with only a minor difference in the power and only a small difference in the design. EE isn't the only brand offering summer sales at the moment. Sky Mobile also offering a full range of discounts on its SIM plans, where consumers can pick up a 40GB SIM for £12 a month. The Galaxy S24 isn't only Samsung device that I'd recommend, however. EE is also offering a discount on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE. This is Samsung's latest tablet and one of the appealing things about this tablet is the 10.9-inch size. While Samsung has the Tab S10 Ultra (which is really expensive) and the Tab S10 Plus – both of which are more powerful – neither of them offer the more compact size of the Tab S10 FE. The Tab S10 FE also offers many of the premium features of its larger siblings, such as S Pen support and an aluminium body. The big difference is that the Tab S10 FE has an LED display, compared to the OLED display on the other Tab S10 models. While there's a difference in display quality, I'd trade that for the smaller size which is more convenient for travelling. As this is EE, this is for the 5G version of the tablet, which is great for browsing or watching movies on the move, without having to worry about where you'll get a connection from. The catch here is that this deal is only available to existing EE customers, but tech fans can get it from £28.80 a month – down from £32 a month – and again that's added onto their EE bill. Shoppers can also buy the Wi-Fi version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE for £499 on Amazon. It's currently being offered with double storage free.
